Seagate puts the firmware version on their drive labels. With the MSS, it's very easy to slide the drive out of the cage and check the firmware version. Like any manufacturer, HP probably uses a few of these and the firmware versions will probably be a mixed bag. Best way to be certain is physically check the installed drives.
The EX-487 are shipped with two 750GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives, does anyone know the firmware for these drives, are they upto the latest firmware available from seagte web site or are they HP OEM firmware, and if HP OEM firmware what version?
The reason I ask is as I understand there is a major bug with the firmware for these drives - can anyone confirm?
Here is URL link to a discussion about the buggy firmware for these drives, which also has links to seagate web site for details,...
HP also ships drives with unique (HP) firmware; maany EX47x 500GB drives have "HP24" firmware, for example. (I cannot speak to EX48x units.) I understand that once aware of the Seagate problems HP stopped shipping problem drives. From the timing this probably stopped after some of the early EX48x shipments. HP has confirmed that the HP24 firmware has the same problem and is, I understand, providing fixes to users of other HP machines. (I suspect the delay on a fix for the MSS units is the need to come up with a solution that does not require a display/keyboard to upgrade the disk firmware.)
There is a potential flaw and your best bet is to compare your model/serial to the "problem" list available on the Seagate site. The list does include units shipped to HP so it should be accurate. If your model/serial appears on the list proceed with caution. Also be aware that HP has stated that units with HP firmware should NOT have the Seagate fix applied.
This is also discussed elsewhere on this board. (Search can be your best friend.)

HP26 is the latest which fixes the bug - not sure how you would apply it to the mediasmart pc though...

If your drive does so happen to appear to die, you could try this link to recover the drive.

JimT: I took the liberty of thanking you, quoting you, and referencing this thread over in http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3197 (page 4 actually). I suspect there will be a number of folks who will benefit from this... Thanks again!

hi john,
not me really, but i'll take any credit where ever possible - lol. it's the user "doon" in the touchsmart thread who deserves the credit for his persistance and the dude who i think is based in sth america with the steps to unbrick the drive using a console...
i'm merely researching on how i can purchase a mediasmart unit here in australia (which are not for sale here (yet)) and looking at potential risks that might be associated with a purchase and weighing up if it is really worth it...
But you get the credit for doing the research and finding the links!
A number of Aussies buy from the US. Only problem is the power cord -- easily fixed. And, of course, some of the spelling errors!
G'day, mate!
