HP Reverses Course: Full Software Upgrade for All MediaSmart Servers

Shortly after the release of the 2.5 upgrade for the MediaSmart Server EX-485 and 487, HP issued a statement clarifying their position on back-porting newly developed features for their current line of MediaSmart servers to first generation (EX-470 and EX-475) customers. In this statement, HP acknowledged their first-gen customer's desire to receive these updates, but cited reasons like hardware changes, software architecture, and development priorities as reasons for not making these new features available. However, it looks like all that is about to change.

HP just issued a statement announcing that the current software version will be made available to all first generation and new LX series MediaSmart Servers this fall.

"We have listened to the customer feedback on wegotserved.co.uk, mediasmartserver.net, mediasmarthome.com and other popular Windows Home Server blogs related to our recent software update availability.  Based on this feedback, we are working to provide a supported path to allow customers to update all generations of their EX Series and LX Series MediaSmart Server products to the current software version.

Due to the generational differences of our platform architectures, we will not be providing the updated software as traditional downloads.  Instead, we will provide complete server image DVD’s through HP support in the same manner as replacement DVD's are provided today.  We expect that there will be certain hardware limitations and/or trade-offs for the various platforms that will be detailed once the new server DVD's are available.

Timing is tentatively scheduled in Fall 2009.  We understand customers would like these updates sooner, but this timing is necessary to adequately develop and test these new software images.  As we get further along in our development, we will provide an updated timetable.

We thank everyone for their continued support of the MediaSmart Server products and appreciate the continued feedback."

It will be interesting to see what the "limitations and trade-offs" will be, but we can guess at a few. For example, we can only imagine the HP Video Converter will virtually cripple stock first generation servers with 512MB of RAM. Plus, given the implementation of the current software on the EX-48x line, the robust HP Photo Webshare feature would likely be overwritten by the current (less powerful) HP Photo Publisher. This announcement won't affect the May upgrade for Amazon S3 and Time Machine support, which EX-470 and EX-475 users will continue to receive as a free download.

Whether there will be any cost associated with the uprade wasn't disclosed, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Well EX-470 and EX-475 owners... When HP does make this full upgrade available, are you going to take it?

I'll take the 2.5 upgrade for my EX-470 in a heartbeat. I've already upgraded to 2GB of RAM so hopefully I'll get all of the functionality the EX-48x customers get. This is great news because I'm sure HP realizes that the EX-47x customers funded the development of the HW/SW for the EX-48x platform. They owe us this upgrade path and I'm OK with a reasonable charge for the new software. Good going HP, now hurry up!

Thank you very much, I am happy to see this isn't the old HP and changes are being made. HP will now get more of my bussiness.

I am happy for this news but, since the orders were formalized for the updates? In Spain, for example, there has not been commercialized the new series (EX-48x) for what if we wan new funcionalides, quizán have to search in other manufacturers.

Thanks. Sell my 475 and buy the 485 or 487... probably be better off from a support stance.

This is good news. Yes, I'll update my 470 when comes out. My first priority though is getting the Time Machine update -- which is good, since it's supposed to be out next month -- that should hold me off until the full update later this year.

Most likely will take the upgrade. Since my set up is more for backup I don't really need more functions available. On the other hand, the new features may inspire me to do more than backups.

"NO HP WHS LEFT BEHIND", way to go with the update!!!

I am on the fence, because this is going to be an image DVD. That means full backups of all drives and a full restore after the system is reimaged. That is alot of work without a decent set of backup utilities/tools.

While I can probably do without the backups (if the upgrade deletes them), until the indexing and new backups take effect, all my music, photos and videos are on the home server. I would hate for those to be deleted in the upgrade process.

Anyone know what will happen to the photos in the webshare portion of the home server, since that program is being removed?

I think this is great! I too am willing to pay for an upgrade. I guess I had better get some additional memory for my EX470 and install it!

Isn't the Time machine upgrade coming out in May?

Hi

I would want that upgrade for sure. Am i willing to pay for it, depends on what price tag.
I live in Norway, and have asked an reseller, about info, when the 485 is ready for sale here, but he has not got an answer yet.

I love my Home Server, and certenly are very happy, that HP desided to make the 2.5 upgrade available for us 47X owners too. And i also have been an advocate for this box, so as i see it, it is just about right that they make that desision.

My guess would be somewhere between September 22nd and December 21st, otherwise known as "Fall." Cool

Yes, when this upgrade is available I will absolutely upgrade regardless of cost. I am really looking forward to the updates, I don`t care about the Photo Webshare feature. FYI - I really don't mind updating the memory and/or the processor either if that will give me more capabilities and a future upgrade path. FYI - I also don't mind completely reloading all the server from scratch either, especially if that gives me more capabilities and a future upgrade path. Thanks HP for making my EX470 upgradable!

Yes, I'll upgrade my 470 with the software since I have already upgraded memory and processor. Looking forward to the video conversion! I know Fall isn't officially over yet HP, but c'mon!

I installed Power Pack 3 without any problems on my EX470 2 GB memory.
