How To Upload Photos to Flickr Using HP Photo Publisher

Applies to: HP MediaSmart Server EX-485 and EX-487
Time required to complete: 5-10 minutes

HP Photo Publisher on your HP MediaSmart Server serves as your link to easily upload photos from your HP MediaSmart Server directly to one of several popular online photo sharing sites. One of these sites is Yahoo's Flickr, which is easily one of the most popular websites for sharing photos and other digital images directly with friends, family, and the rest of the world.

In just a few short minutes, you can link your MediaSmart Server to your existing or new Flickr account to easily and quickly upload photos and other images.

Step 1 (if necessary): Create a Flickr Account

If you don't already have a Flickr account established, you'll need to first create one. Flickr is a part of Yahoo!, so you'll need a Yahoo! ID. To put it simply, if you have (or had at some point) an @yahoo or @ymail address, you're already set to create your Flickr account.

On the Flickr account creation screen, log in using your Yahoo! ID to create your account. If you don't have a Yahoo! ID, click the Sign Up link below the log in box to get started.

Once you have your Flickr account created, go to step 2.

Step 2: Enter HP Photo Publisher

Once you have a Flickr account, you need to give access to your MediaSmart Server.

To open HP Photo Publisher, log in to your MediaSmart Server Console (you need to be the Server Admin to do this), and select "HP Photo Publisher" in the left hand selection menu. Then, select "Launch HP Photo Publisher" on the right.

Alternatively, you can also click the HP MediaSmart Server launcher from your desktop or Start Menu, then click the HP Photo Publisher icon.

Step 3: Select Flickr from the options menu

Step 4: Log into your Flickr Account

Click the log on link on the Photo Publisher page, which will open up Flickr in your web browser. Enter your Flickr user name and password and log in.

(If you didn't create your Yahoo! ID and/or Flickr account in Step 1, you'll need to do so now before you can proceed any further).

You'll be shown a page asking to give permission for your MediaSmart Server to access your account. Click the "OK, I'LL ALLOW IT" button to continue.

When you've done that, return to the Photo Publisher page, then click the next button.

Step 5: Upload Photos

On the following page, you'll begin to upload photos to your Flickr account. Here you'll be asked if you want to upload photos to your Flickr Stream, or a specific album. You can also create an album by using the lower text field.

Once you've made your choice, click the Next button.

The photo uploader will appear. Use the left pane to navigate the folders on your MediaSmart Server for the images you want to upload. Place a checkbox next to any images you wish to upload.

When you've made all your image selections, click the Finish button, and wait for your photos to upload. Once complete, you'll be taken to Flickr to view your images.

For those using a free Flickr account, there are certain restrictions imposed on the amount and size of photos you can upload in a calendar month. At the time of this writing, Flickr only allows free account holders to upload 100MB per month. To see the latest restrictions, go to the Flickr help page.

If you have the EX-470 or EX-475 HP MediaSmart Server, you can try using the PhotoSync for Windows Home Server add-in as an alternative for the Flickr upload feature in HP Photo Publisher.

Thank you for the info... I am hoping that HP will offer some path to get this functionality available on EX470 series machines.

Has there been a patch for the EX470 Series yet?

I was hoping I could upload my .mov files as well as my pictures to Flickr, but they do not appear in the list. I guess I'll just keep using the software from Flickr instead of this.
