How To Change Your HP MediaSmart Server's Name

Admit it. When you first set up your HP MediaSmart Server, you flew through the intial setup wizard hitting next at lighting speed. During that set up, you may (briefly) recall that during the installation process you are asked to provide a name for your Server, and if you were quick with the next button or not paying much attention you may now be stuck with the default server name. Or, what may have seemed like a good name at the time turned out to be something you're not happy with now.

If you're in either of those camps, no doubt you've searched every inch of the home server console for the option to change it... only to come up empty handed. Fortunately, not all hope is lost. Take a sigh of relief; there is a way to change this name later.

As you may know or have heard others talk about, Windows Home Server OS is, at its core anyway, the Windows Server 2003 operating system. Like any other version of Windows, there is a way to change the computer name. You just need to know where to look. Follow me as we go step-by-step through this process.

The first step is to log into the Windows Home Server OS via Remote Desktop (RDP).  In order to use remote desktop, your computer OS must be able initiate Remote Desktop connections. You do this by opening the Remote Desktop Connection and then entering either the name of the Server or the IP address of the Server into the RDP dialog box.  You can typically find the Remote Desktop in the Accessories section of the Start menu of your Client PC. See the image below:

When you're asked for credentials, the username is "Administrator" and the password is whatever you set as your main MediaSmart Server password. As a little sidenote, HP Support does not support Remote Desktop’ing into the Server, and caution should be exercised since you can really mess things up if you don’t know what you're doing.

Once you have established a remote connection into the Server, click Start, then right click on My Computer (on the top right column), then click on Properties. You'll be presented the System Properties window:

Click on the Computer Name tab, then click on Change.  When the Computer Name Changes dialog box opens, you can change the name in the space below Computer Name.  See the image below:

When you've updated your server's name click OK to close the Computer Name Changes dialog box, then click OK to close System Properties box. You can then close the Remote Desktop session by clicking the x on the yellow bar at the top of the screen.

For prosperity, give your MSS a quick reboot and all should be well. Enjoy your newly named HP MediaSmart Server.

I cannot figure out how to connect via Remote Desktop to my MSS...each time I attempt to connect, I get this message: The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. Please try connecting again later. If the problems continues, contact your administrator.

I never even get prompted to enter a username of Adminstrator and my password.

I do not see any method in the MSS control panel to allow Remote Desktop Connections. Any suggestions?

I advise against trying to change the server's name. I tried it and the WHS became unreachable from my computers (even after rebooting all machines, routers, etc.). No response to pings, nothing. Finally, I had to hard reset the WHS to factory defaults to get it accessible again.

I got this resolved finally... made a number of changes and not sure exactly which one fixed the issue but now everything is working fine. I did not change my server's name.

I have my server name setup OK but when I log onto the MediaSmart Server Control Center and select the Server icon it says it can't connect to "HPSERVER", which was the default server name. I had changed the default server name when I installed WHS and everything else works fine.

I am encountering the same problem. Changed the name of the server.
The Mac software allows me to change the name of the server, but the Windows software seems to be hardcoded to look for HPSERVER.
How do I change that?

I was able to change the server name and have the console find the server. It has been a while, but I had to make changes in the windows (XP) registry. Even though I changed the server name when I installed it, the registry entries still had the default server name listed. The other thing I have had to change is the host file. I have mapped the new server name to the IP address that DHCP assign to the server. This is a little bit of a pain, since if the DHCP assign a different address after a power failure of the network, I have to change the hosts file on the network PCs. Any way to give the server a static IP address?

Thanks for the tip. I found the registry entry:

\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\Transport\Server\Name

I came upon any page describing using regedit but the path doesn't exist on my setup. They probably moved it.

The registry change did the trick. Thank you so much for that info. I am really loving my WHS as I have 4 computers on my network attached to it and it is a lifesaver. Have upgraded the CPU to 2.6 GHz and the RAM to 1 GB. Have been unable to make a 2 GB stick work and have tried 3 known stick without success. Any ideas?
