Step-by-Step to Installing the Microsoft Vista 64-bit Client Software for Windows Home Server

Before you begin, it's important to note that the HP MediaSmart Server software and the Windows Home Server Connector must be installed on one network computer running a Microsoft Windows XP or Vista 32-bit operating system. If this software has not been installed, run the Software Installation CD that came with your HP MediaSmart Server.

When I came into your site, I did have some problems. On the left hand side is a section saying WHS will backup your PC's. In the middle was a picture of a Vista Ultimate install disc, and under it was the section on the 64 bit software. On the main WHS site, the WHS team has finally received feedback, and changed their site to reflect the reality that WHS does not fully work with all PC's, and not all Vista builds. Seems folks were buying WHS, in whatever form, and then finding their Home or Ultimate ( the two main consumer builds ) were not supported. While no one feels this was intentional, lots of folks feel the software maker involved was less than forthcoming.

This is not acceptable.  It is far too complicated.  HP, Microsoft and other vendors are rolling out machines with Windows Vista 64-bit installed.  HP and Microsoft should be suppling 64-bit versions of the MediaSmart Server software installation.  I have no 32-bit windows machines on my network to perform this rather slopping work around, which leaves me with no choice but to return the server.

Not working at all...

I upped the WHS to 1.3.6.21622 software version;
I updated HP smartmedia via win update
I tried to install connector on the 64b PC from the shared software dir

it tells me that i can't intalss connetor on a 64b PC...

what's next ?

September 14, 2008 10:05 AM

somewhere in that tut, it is written : "Install the Microsoft Vista 64-bit Client Software on computer 3."...
where shall i find it ?
the one in the software sgared dir is not for vista64

The guide is good almost all the way. On the end, it is not too clear that the folders from your server actually appeares on your network as viewed from your 64bit computer, although you are not logged in to console. Use your 64bit computer as told to.

Second, and far more serious: The innstall does not work!!
My server is up to date, I find the install file, I double click.......Then I get a message telling me the install wont work on this version of Windows. Same message as when using the installation CD. Yes, I have restarted the 64bit computer and the server. The Install file is dated 16.10.2007. Isn´t it supposed to be newer (from the recent update?)

Anyway, if anyone can give me some hints on this, I would be really happy. Im stuck at the moment.

Andy

Has anyone not had problems with this 64 bit install? I have two PCs that would be affected. Once this install is completed successfully are all functions available on an XP system still available on the Vista 64 bit?

I have contacted HP Support. Will post here if I get any good answers.

I am having trouble installing the Client Software(64 bit) via a Network Share. I go to START and enter my MediaSmart Server name in the Start Search field and it doesn't find it. I'm sure I am doing something wrong but I cannot see what. Can someone set me straight? Thanks

Fix for those who does not get this to work:

This article is a bit confusing and ambiguous for those of us that didn´t klick the "how to innstall Microsoft Powerpack 1"-link above: You need to update TWO different places. You need to update under "HP MediaSmart Server->HP Software Updates" as shown on the screenshots. But you ALSO have to press the button "update now" under "settings->general->windows update". This last update is the one mentioned above as "Download and install Microsoft Windows Home Server PowerPack 1". It is easy to overlook.
Also, there is one other difference from the article: Doubleclicking "install" under "Windows Home Server Connector Software" did not work for me. I had to doubleclick "setup".

Hope this helps.

Lucky:
Searching like that did not work for me either. Go to Start->network, and you should find your server there. Remember to have a secure network, or you wont be the only one seeing it (especially if you have turned media sharing for photos, music and videos ON).
If you still dont find it, try right-click and "refresh".
If you still dont find it, check (via 32-bit) that the Router status is "working" under "settings->remote access" on the server.
If this still doesnt work, it is beyond my skills. Contact HP support.

Andy

Thanks Andy and please forgive my ignorance but after I couldn't find the server with the search I did go to START->Network and the server does show up there. Here is where my ignorance really shows, what do I do at that point? Double clicking doesn't do anything, right clicking gives me a couple of options but they are not anything usefull. Do I have to setup some kind of share on the server? My have missed something in the setup?

September 25, 2008 8:52 AM

Doubleclicking install or setup under Windows Home Server Connector Software is the thing to do (only setup worked for me). There is a delay of maybe 30 sec before the HP install-box appeares. Just to be sure: You have updated BOTH the HP software AND the Windows Home Server software, right?

Andy

September 25, 2008 10:09 AM

Yes I have updated both and they match the instruction example. My problem is that I am not getting to the server from my 64-bit machine in order to double click install or setup. I can see the server but how do I get into it?

September 25, 2008 10:13 AM

I do not have the server here, but I recall there where several icons with the same name (or close to)as the server, when viewing folder "Network". Be sure to doubleclick the right one (or try them all). I will check when I get back home (couple of hours from now).

September 25, 2008 10:30 AM

Yeah, I'm not at home either. I'm at work and should be working but I can't stop thinking about it. I wish I could take the day off and work on my server. Don't go out of your way and I appreciate your help.

September 25, 2008 12:28 PM

Home now. I have two icons with the server name. The one you are looking for is the icon looking like a screen and tower, the same as your computer icon in the same folder. When I doubleclick it, the folders appear. If the server icon or the folder doesnt appear, I am not sure what to do. But I would try restarting the router, server, computer and so on. If you are on wireless, try using a cable between computer and router. Also be sure that your router is not blocking unknown MAC-adresses (the hardware ID of computers/servers/other units). If so, you must put the server MAC on the "accepted MAC"-list. Or disable MAC filter.
Or, as mentioned, it could be something with the sharing settings. At this level, it is time to contact HP support if no one else gives you a better answer than me.
Hope it helps, though!

Andy

Well, I think all is well. After getting home from work I was able to successfully map a drive to the server, opened the software folder and double click install. Now I have console access to the server and all seems to be working as advertised. I do not know why the map was not working last night. I have one more 64-bit machine to setup and then I can tackle the remote access.

I believe I've done everything right, but the connector software still can't connect to the server. Strange. Not sure where to turn to next. Anyone have any ideas?

I too am having a similar problem. I just puchased a system running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. The HP MediaSmart software installs but after that the server discovery fails. I am able to see the server by searching for it from the Start button and navigate to the software installation files. Everything proceeds correctly until server discovery at which point it fails with the following messare:

I was having problems seeing or connecting to the server where one day I could connect and the next day I couldn't. Then I remembered what someone on another thread had said must be done.... Assign a permenant address for the server. Since I have done that and forwarded port 80, 443 and 4125 I have had no problems connecting. You may want to check that.

Thanks Lucky! I'll give that a try and post my results.
