Upper Case Temp Warning

I recently purchased a refurbed EX470. It ran OK for a while but now I have a red status light and an upper case temperature warning. The server is in a cool basement with plenty of ventilation. The lower case temperature is normal. The upper case temp is 80 degrees C. The top of the case is cool to the touch. The Upper and lower case fans show as running fine. I have the server turned off just in case. I currently do not have any drives in the top three slots. Is there anything in the upper case that could be damaged by a high temperature? I plan to open up the case to upgrade the RAM is there anything I should check or replace to try to resolve this issue?

I can not connect to my EX 470 from my LAN when my router is connected to my DSL modem. It works fine when the router is disconnected from the modem. I had to disconnect the modem to initially install the client connector on my PCs. If I ping the server by name with the DSL modem connected to the router I get the outside address of the Router. When I ping the server by name with the DSL modem disconnected I get the local address of the server. I can see the server in the network neighborhood with the modem connected to the router and the backups seem to work as well. I just cant use the connector or the console. UPNP is enabled on my router. What do I have configured wrong?

I apologize if this has already been asked but I searched and didn't see anything. I am a longtime PC user that recently bought a mac. I have been managing my photos with iPhoto. I am discovering that iPhoto is not exactly ideal for my situation, but would like to keep it as my default photo program so my wife can use it to upload and share pictures. Here's what I'd like to do: Ideally, what I'd like to do is store all the photos in a central place (MSS) so that I could then access them from any computer, rather than just having them tied to one machine. As an alternative to this, having media collector aggregate the files would be ok. Also, would like to be able to access my photos remotely via Istream, simplify media on my iphone, or the media streaming functionality in remote access. Here are the problems I've been having. If I save my Iphoto Library onto the MSS and then access it from my laptop (via wifi), the connection seems quite slow. When clicking through the library, it takes a few seconds to pull up an album or event. When I save the...

I just unpacked and installed a HP Media Smart EX 490 for backup of PC, MAC and iTunes-server. I have an account on the WHS from where I copied one album to test with. I placed the album in the musicfolder. iTunes-server is enabled and iTunes finds my server but no songs on it. The album is in .wav so it should be ok. I've set the Music catalog in WHS to be "public" What can I do next? (I hope no noobs are bying this cause it's not very easy to set up) I also wan't to know how to get cover art on the albums stored on the server for iTunes-use. Thanks.

I'm confused on how it works. Let's say I use 2TB drives and I fill all 4 internal bays with them. I want it to be rundant in case of HD failure. Will I see 6TB total and the last HD is for backup such as RAID 0+1? If I add 4 more external HDs, does it come out to 14TB while one HD is still being used for backup? If this is true can I use all internal drives for 8TB and use one external HD for the backup?

I recently purchased the Sans Digital TR4M-B Port Multiplier to use with my HP MediaSmart EX470 Home Server. I had read that the earlier server models support port mulitpication provided it is limited to 4 drives. I received the port multiplier today, installed a 500gb sata drive and plugged it into the esata port on the server. However, the server does not recognize the new drive. I removed the drive, formatted it, and tried a second time but the server still does not recognize the new drive. Has anyone successfully integrated a Sans Digital TR4M-B Port Multiplier with the HP MediaSmart EX470, and if so, how did you do it??? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks Ken

I'm new to servers and stumped. nothing I try will get the other computer access to the folder I set up for it. Any help, particlarly in simple terms and using crayons is appreciated

I recently purchased an EX490 and installed 3TB of storage. Setup went well. All PC functions seem to be working quite well, including backups. I have 3 Macs and began the process of setting up a Mac share to backup those machines using Time Machine. I ran into some problems with one of the Macs, so I decided to start over. I deleted the Mac share I had created so that I could recreate with the right user access settings. Now, I can not create a new share with that same (once used) name of "Mac". On the "adding the shared folder" window, I get the big red X next to the "Adding the shared folder" step. I was able to create a share that I call "temp", delete it and recreate it with no problems, but not the Mac folder. Also did create a Mac1 and tried to rename that share back to Mac, it also failed. I get a message that says "The shared folder was not renamed because it is being used by one or more users. Try to reuse the folder again when it is not being used." It will let me rename any share to...

I've got a two level question: I've got some strange things going on with my EX485 that lead me to believe that I may need to do a Server Recovery: 1. Every so often (maybe once per week) it will show that all three of the disk drives are failing and asks me to do a repair. I'll do the repair and then I'll need to shut off the WHS before the warnings go away. I'll also noticed that the warnings will go away if I simply restart the WHS. 2. I have the scheduled wakeup up time set to 7AM, and backup window 8AM to 11AM. I've just notices that the WHS wakes up at 1AM, not 7. This was my original wake-up time. I can't find out where to look for a task scheduler on the WHS to see if there is a left over task waking it up? 3. I had a few failed add-in installs, notably Lights-out. Does this sound like a Server Recovery is called for? If I do a Server recovery? 1. Do I need to shut down all of the WHS connectors while doing the server recovery? Do I need to re-install the...

I am having an issue where my HP Mediasmart EX470 is somehow locking up my router so that there is no network access for any computers. The light on the router for my server blinks SUPER fast at a steady pace. Almost like a fast strobe light. To fix this, I have been unplugging, and replugging the network cable to my server. That instantly fixes the problem, but only temporarily. It happens almost every day. Also, after I unplug and then replug the ethernet cable to the server, it reboots all by itself. Update: It just happened to me again, so after it did it's weird reboot after I unplugged and replugged the network cable, I decided to log in via remote desktop to investigate. I was presented with an error message saying my system recovered from a serious error. I have screen shots of everything, along with 2 files (logfiles of the problem) that it wanted to send to microsoft for error reporting.

Most of the reason I bought my HP EX495 was to backup our home systems, but I also REALLY liked the idea of having a centralized iTunes library (library & music share). Because we also have and heavily use an AppleTV I wanted my daughter, wife and myself to be able to create our own playlists in the SAME iTunes library so it can be sync'd up with the AppleTV (sync'd so it can play those playlists when the computers are off rather than streaming which requires the computers to be on), but I want them to be able to create and manage that central library FROM THEIR OWN COMPUTERS AND THEIR OWN INSTALL OF ITUNES (right now we've been using a single desktop as the point of access for iTunes for everyone, pain in the rear end). I *thought* the HP Home Server would resolve this? Here's what I don't get. So far as I can tell, all the "iTunes Server" on the server does is shows all media files, in our case all 75,000 of them with no playlists, no organization, nothing...just here's a list of a crap load of stuff everyone can see on the network in...

I have just purchased a brand new HP MediaSmart EX 470 home server. I have already added three of our family laptops to work with it and everything has been quite simple, as each of those machines is being used by only one person. However, we also have a small Asus netbook that has three user accounts set up and the accounts are exactly the same we have on those personal laptops. If I connect the netbook to the home server (install connector etc.), I suppose there will be some problems with backups etc. due to the identical user accounts. Am I right? What is the best solution for the situation? Should I just create new, non-identical user accounts to the netbook or is there any other way? Creating new user accounts is no big deal, because we do not store any data on the netbook and it also has only few applications installed.

The laptop was connected by Wi-Fi but uses the CPL connection. You should know that I live in France but I am English. The instructions and the CDs for the WHS are in French. Here is the problem… The laptop lost its ability to connect via Wi-Fi, after trying to rectify the problem; I just bought the CPLs and forgot the Wi-Fi. Some weeks later the Laptop could not load Vista. I tried everything but in the end I had to use the restoration CD supplied by Toshiba, which reformatted the HDD, reinstalled Vista and the laptop came to life again.
This is actually in regards to my HP MediaSmart EX470. Please help me with this problem, or forward me on to the appropriate resource to help. My problem: I added two Seagate Barracuda LP ST31500541AS 1.5 TB drives to the server. I used the wizard when adding, and my total storage listed through the console is saying 3.0+ TB of storage. Everything seems fine according to the console, however, when I tried to add my files to the server through my PC, I was limited to the installed 500GB drive. I have well over 2 TB of data that I need to move onto this drive, but I can't seem to add more than 500GB. The folders are shared, but I just can't seem to access the "Pooled" storage. Please help.
