My HP mediserver has the following configuratio. HP media server has all four bays filled with 500 gb seagates A CFI 4 bay Esata case - has a single 1 tb Hitachi (in the bottom slot) This setup has been working for 6 months. I have added a 5th 500gb seagate to the CFI case in the slot above the 1TB Hitachi. This drive does not show up in the Server Storage section where you add a drive to the pool. This seagate is identical to the other 4 segates. However, this drive does show up if I use the administrative console. I was able to format it from here. I have shut down (turned off) the HP Mediasmart several times, being sure to turn on the CFI first before I turn the Mediasmart back on. I have removed, reinserted and formatted the new 500 gb seagate several times. Its been suggested to check the serial cable, skip the 2nd bay, or flip the drives in bay 1 and 2 of the extender. HELP!!!

Hi all. I just received my mediasmart and need to buy some drives. Should I be going for 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm? I normally would just go for the fastest - but in a server application, is the benefit of lower speed, cooler temp and quiet operation in the 5400 rpm better then having the faster speed of the 7200 rpm, with I assume will run at a hotter temp and have more noise. I will mostly be streaming, using backup and online access. Thanks

I just purchased the HP Mediasmart server and was wondering if anybody knows wether it can do regular backups of external HD's that are connected to my PC tower? I've learned so far that you can schedule regular back ups of the C drive in the PC, but I'm wondering if I can set up regular back ups of all of the 5 -500GB Western Digital External HD's I have attached through USB to my PC. I already have data in these 5 external HD's that I need to back up. If anyone could help me out with this I'd really appreciate it! If it's possible to do these back ups, what are the steps that I need to take in order to set it up? Thank you so much.

It only seems to affect those tracks that are over 7-8 minutes in length (BTW my favourite ones, CLose To The Edge, Jessica etc...) Yhese tracks start OK, but repeat after about 40 seconds, without exception this is when they repeat, So Close To The Edge starts, gets about 40 seconds in then starts again, this repeats for the length of the song. Any idea what is going on?

Copying Data from old System Drive

So here's my problem. I had to do a Server Recovery of my MSS, which only had the original Seagate 500Gb drive in it. After performing the restore I keep getting an error stating "Windows Home Server has failed to Initialize". This is after the Connector software and HP MediaSmart software install. I spoke with HP support and tried everything they suggested. Obviously their last resort suggestion is to do a Factory Reset. As I don't want to lose all the data that I have in my shared folders on the MSS, I'm hesitant to do this. Therefore I removed the system drive and put it into my desktop. I can access the data drive from the MSS system drive on my desktop now, but when I try to copy the data files or even open them I can't. Is this a problem with access rights that were set up on the MSS? Does anyone have an idea of how to copy this data before I do a Factory Reset? Or if anyone has any ideas of how to get past the Failed Initialization error that would be great. Thanks.

Storage Options

Hi, I'm thinking about purchasing an EX470 - but the one thing stopping me at the moment is a query about drive capacities. I've read a review which says that all the drives have to have the same capacity. However, browsing the forums, I've seen that people are using various setups. Ideally I'd like to have: Drive 1: 500GB - the drive it comes with Drives 2, 3 & 4 - 1TB each I also want to avoid running drives off USB ports at the moment - I just don't need the mess! So A) Is the above setup feasible? B) Is it possible to have different capacities in 2/3/4 i.e. 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB? At some point I'll need to increase the storage and so the ability to slap in a 2TB drive to replace one of the 1TB drives would be very beneficial. C) I want to have a full backup of data - so if I had the 3.5TB setup as described above, I'm assuming that I'd be safely able to store about 1.75TB of data? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I continue to receive a missing drive notification from the top drive slot in my server. The first time it happened I replaced the drive and used another empty slot and did not think of it again. Now I have a new green 1TB WD drive that I placed in the top slot. I think this is slot # 4. Twice in the last two days the drive has gone "missing". I pull it out and re-insert and everything is fine. For a while at least. This issue could be the actual backplane connector but I'm not sure. Question: Can I swap hard drive locations from perhaps slot # 2 or #3 without any system issues to troubleshoot the issue? I am not planning to move the HD with the installed operating system. Also must I power down the server to do this or is this hot swappable? Thanks, Scott

I tried to add an external USB 500GB drive to my Media Smart Server. However, I got the error message "Hard Drive Initialization Failed : The Wizard was unable to connect a volume on the hard drive". I retried several times with the same result. The status in the Console was "not added". I unplugged the drive from the Server and I got a warning that Network Heath is at risk and I saw that the status of the External Drive changed to "Missing". I then plugged back the drive to try to Remove the drive from the server (remember it was not added, so this is why I did not try to Remove him in the first place) and the status of the drive changed to "Unhealthy". It does not offer an option to repair it and when I try to Remove it I get the crazy message "There is not enough remaining space on your home server to safely remove the hard drive" This is nuts because I have 3,84 Terrabytes available space and there is absolutely nothing on the external hard drive since it was never even initialized. How on earth can I solve this? Your help...

Hello there Server-lovers! I’m calling out for your Professional help regarding some issues that i don’t understand. For some years i’m administrating a HP Proliant Server, at my office just because nobody else want to do it. I’m just an amateur, but Windows Server 2003 is pretty easy to understand. For some weeks ago i bought myself a HP MediaSmart Server EX475 with 500+500 Gb. The first thing i did was to add 2 disks with 1Tb each. I then added them to the Storage Pool, and can see that the Total Size is 2,73 Tb. So far so god. I use a HP Workstation xw4400 with Windows Vista Ultimate, and I put up network shortcuts to the shared folders. And now starts the questions: 1. Windows explorer shows 445 Gb total space and 445 Gb of free space on each shortcut. Why ??? How is the balancing of the disks working ? I installed 2 add-ins (”Disk Management” and ”Advanced Admin Console”) to figure out where my files are in what partition and so on… (just have to know) (And just for the record: I turned off duplication of folders because i still have my Maxtor 1 Tb Lan-disk...

I installed the PP1 yesterday and the upgrade went fine. Unfortunately, now the server seems to be doing a Storage Balancing every hour. In the past few hours, it did one at 6:28, 7:20, 8:29 and now it just finised at 9:35. I only have one 500GB drive in the HP 470 and only have 12GB of data on it. Prior to PP1, I rarely ever saw it run this utility. Now that it's safe to add my 2nd drive and turn folder duplication on, will the frequency and duration of Storage Balancing increase? Will cranking up the RAM to 2GB fix this? Up until now, the latency on this server was not noticable. Now, when Storage Balancing is running, it's almost not usable. Thanks, DickDay
