This weekend I rebuild my hp mediasmart 495ex. Now I already had a vga board, 4gb ram and the q9550s proc upgraded 1 year ago. However now I am running Server 2012 essentials, the drive lights, and using storage pools. Then I setup iSCSI from my Windows 8 system, as the HP mediasmart are Gigabit NICs. Copy speeds are 100mb per second (which are gigabit speeds). So now my HP Medismart is acting as a great iSCSI device AND hosting shares via a wireless N USB dongle. This is a great little form factor box, running able to run software raid / storage pools / deduplication / etc. The only thing missing is USB 3.0. However with an Esata port, and iscsi gigabit connection, I dont need it.

Add Mass Storage

I have an EX470 server with eSata port. I know there is various companies that sell eSata enclosures which you can connect one of these to the Ex470 to add mass storage. What happens when you connect two Ex470 servers to each through eSata? You have Ex470 server 1 (WHS installed) connected to Ex470 server 2 (No OS installed) to create a mass storage. Is this something that can be done? Does 2 Ex470 servers see each other or is this a waste time?

WD20EARS set up questions

Greetings everyone, Back in 2010, I purchased a WD20EARS 2TB drive and put it into my HP Mediasmart EX490 server. I was having streaming issues and after reading the you can't / shouldn't use these drives in the WHS v1 box, I removed the drive and put in a 2TB Caviar Black. Had no issues after that so I thought they were correct. I shoved the drive into an external enclosure, reformatted it and started using it for backups. Now I am in the position that I want / need to increase drive space on my server. Haing read that these green drives perform fine in the WHS v1 boxes if "set up properly", I am reviewing my options. This is what I am considering... I would like to set up the WD20EARS drive to work in the WHS v1 box and purcchase a 4TB external drive for backups (my least expensive solution). If I feel ambitious, I want to take the 2TB caviar black drive and make it my system drive - moving the original 1TB Seagate drive to the drivepool (mostly in case it starts to crap out - I don't lose the system as a frind of...

Friends, My HP ex495 has been acting up for the past 45 days. The backup database corrupted, lots of errors on the C: drive even after running chkdsk, etc. TodayI decided to do a server recovery. (about 16TB of very precious data, children's birth, all family pics, etc). No go. My windows PC gets a sockets error when I try to do the TFTP step 2 in recovery. Now my server is totally unaccessible. The 4 internal drives lack the blue light on them. The health idiot light on the front is flashing blue/nothing/blue/nothing. I would like to get the server alive long enough to get the data off onto another NAS which I'll buy. If anyone can walk me through the recipe that leads to success, $50 to you or $100 to your favorite charity. Incidentally, when I tried to do the system recovery the server flashed red/blue on the health light and then I paperclipped the hole. It then flashed white I believe? No response at all. Is there an expert data reclamation service around for this server type where I could send it off and get it all done? The data is really precious to me and...

Okay, after several years of flawless service, my HPMediasmart server has died--at least the system drive has failed. It started acting very flakey--took a long time to access using the console, got a backup server failure message, got a drive extender error message, and other errors. Fortunately I was able to copy the contents of my Public Folders to another computer. I tried to run the repair procedures, but things just got worse. So, I broke down and replaced the system drive with a new hard drive. I've run the system server restore disk but have been unsuccessful. I keep getting a server not found message. I have followed all of the instructions in the HP user manual to no avail. I have turned off the the firewalls on both the network router and on my computer. I have also run the network diagnostics several times and it reports everything is working properly. I have restarted both the server and the computer several times as well. Still cannot get the computer to find the server on the network. Even tried directly connecting to the server from my computer and tried connecting with a different computer on the network. Nothing seems...

I have been reading alot about the new 3TB drives and if they will work in the ex49x servers. Since I ran across a couple Black Friday sales for Seagate 3TB drives for $89, I decided it was time to give it a try. The server did not like the drive internally. I tried a few of the guides to get it recognized as its full capacity, and decided that it was too much of a risk, so I decided to try another path. I was looking, and found a nice little 4 disk SATA enclosure for $99. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817576001 Once I received the enclosure, I popped in a drive, and then plugged it into my Win7 32bit laptop. The laptop saw the drive, but only 746GB. I went to Drive management, deleted the partition, and then changed the drive to GPT, formatted it for NTFS, and then it showed correctly. I then put in the second disk, and did the same. I did find that my laptop could only see the first disk on eSATA, since the port is not a multiplier port. Now it was time to move to the WHS server. I plugged in the USB and eSATA...

Has anyone been able to connect (internally or externally) a 4Tb hard drive to their EX495 (or any MediaSmart NAS)? I spent the better part of the day clearing one of my 2 Tb hard drives to swap in the 4 Tb drive. Once I put the 4 Tb drive in the NAS, it said it had 1.64 Tb capacity. Is there a way to make the NAS recognize the full 4 Tb? I've done many Google searches on this but the 4Tb drives must be too new for any useful Google results to exist. Any help will be appreciated.

I had 2 (2tb green drives for data that i assume still work) I understand that they no longer make the old format drives what drives are compatable? I know with jumpers u can use the advance format drives for the storage pools. I read all kinds of procedures to use current drives none of wich i iunderstand. Is this think even fixable or just a money pit ( assume i have no IT experience) Would appreciate any info especially for a quick fix: install new drive and recover system drive.

Drive "missing" when moving drives around

I have a MSS 48X. I had 4 drives anad needed to upgrade one of them (the one in Bay 4). So I hooked up a new larger drive externally via the USB port and then through the consol added that as a new storage device and "removed" the one in Bay 4. Many hours later the data transfer was completed, by which time the drive in bay 4 was freed up. I then shut the system down and removed the Bay 4 drive and replaced it physically with the drive in the external enclosure. On re-boot I was expecting the system to recognize that I had physically moved the new drive as I've successfully done this once before. But no. This time the system shows the external drive as "missing" and it shows the new drive now sitting in bay 4 as available to be added. But on attempting to add it, the system assumes it must be re-formatted. It's my understanding that (non-system) drives can be moved around, as I have done here. And as I say, I've done this once before with success. But it's not working now. Any thoughts as to what I'm missing this time...

I have a MS 48X to which I added a 5th drive - an external 3Tb drive via USB. The total server capacity BEFORE the addition was 5.23Tb with "System" accounting for 23Gb. After the addition of the 3Tb drive the total capacity is 7.96Tb - as expected - but the "free space" did not increase as much as expected because "System" now accounts for 769Gb!! This "System" amount does not include "PC backups" or "Duplication". They remained unchanged. There are in fact no Shared folders currently enabled for Duplication. Backups accounts for 916Gb. Anybody have an idea what would cause System to grow by such a huge amount?

I am running my EX 495 just to back-up a Windows 7 desktop and laptops. I have had no problems with the EX 495. I only use two bays and I want to add two more hard drives so I can replicate my back-ups. Are there any size limitations on the drives I can buy? Earlier threads say there might be limitations at the 2 TB level. I was going to buy a couple of Seagate ST2000DM001 Barracuda 7200RPM 2 TB SATA 6 GB/S NCQ 64 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drives. Does anyone see any issues with my plan?

Can't read hard drive

Hello, I'm trying to get files off of a hard drive that was in a WHS v.1 box. I have the drive hooked up to a Windows 7 box with an external SATA - USB adapter. Every file I try to open gives me an error message. For pdf's the error is "Could not open file. File not found". For word the error is, "Word was unable to read this document. It may be corrupt..". For Outlook messages the error is, "The file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it, ...". The WHS v.1 box had Drive Extender and Duplication on for these files but the other hard drive is toast, so it a good thing I had Duplication enabled...that is if all the files aren't corrupted! Thanks for any help.

Need New Hard Drive for Dummies Guide - Please :)

I have a HP MediaSmart Home Server that has 2 western Digital drives in it. They are 750 gigs each. I have started to have some problems with my server. Typical issues you read about, problems connecting, backup service no longer running. Whenever I try to repair the backup database, I cannot stay connected to the server. I loaded the SMART addin and according to it my \\PhysicalDrive1 has 34 bad sectors and needs to be replaced as soon as possible. Since the SMART Addin shows a Physicaldrive0 and a Physicaldrive1 I am assuming the drive that is going bad is the drive that is in the 2 slot on my server. I powered down my server and pulled out my drive to look at it to see if I could figure out what I need to order, and I am not ever smart enough to figure out how to get the drive out of the carriage. Is there a guide or an article on how to replace a hard drive for dummies somewhere on the net? What drive should I order? Do I just swap out the drive and will it replicate the data for me automatically? Do I...

Red/White Health Light

I posted in another thread about not being able to access one of my drives, but now it seems the problem is deeper. The HP485 Health light turned red. According to HP this means it has an operating system failure. I could not establish a connection to the server so I rebooted it. Upon reboot, the health light turned half white half red (like both leds were on). HP says to press the recessed status/recovery button and the light will flash different colors representing a code, however when I press it nothing happens. Sound like an OS failure? How do I verify and what would be my next steps? We use this for our small business, all our files (including Quickbooks) is on the server! Thanks fopr any help!
