New connection software was automatically downloaded and installed on the 27th. This was supposedly a Microsoft realease. My WHS has been running flawlessly for quite some time, but since this install my Port forwarding keeps failing and therefore I lose remote access capability. Also I have been looseing Internet connectivity, and have had to reboot my modem and router on several occaisions. I wonder if anyone else has experienced problems since this release. I guess if it continues I will attemt yo correct it by going back to the previous connect software. Marv

Webshare problems - ActiveX Photoldr add-in

I am using IE8beta, on Vista SP1, and have the HP photoldr control installed and active. When I try to use it to add photos to albums, I get the dialog box with an explorer-like folder tree in the left panel, and a blank right panel where photo shortcuts should appear. But, the folder tree wont let me browse, view folder contents, or expand folder subtrees, etc. so it's not possible navigate folders or to select photos to be installed. Anyone else have a similar problem with IE ActiveX plug-in for photo loading? I removed the plug-in and re-installed it, but get the same results. I have lots of photos and lots of albums to set up, so using a browser without the activeX add-in and loading photos one by one isnt practical for me.

Hi, Looking for soem assistance: I spoke to HP yesterday regarding the upgrade of the memory of my new Ex745 device and they informed me no problem please go ahead and upgrade. I ask for specific details from HP reagrding the DRAM module and they told me what to purchase. I purchased the exact specs 2GB DDR2 DRAM memory module. I disassembled my new device by watching a video on you tube, which is failry straight forward once you know how. However installed the new module and it doesnt boot up all the hd lights stay red. Thus i deciced to put back in the 512 memory module and the device booted. Either: (1) I have a faulty memory module (2) there is a dip switch or jumper connector I need to move to get the new memory to work???? (3) I have screwed something up. Can someone please help as I may have to return the new memory module to the shop. Thanks Brian

The install gets all the way to the point where it tries to "find" my home server. It hangs there several minutes before erroring out with "An unknown network error has occurred." I can ping HPServer. I cannot go to http://hpserver It looks like it is going to work because the status bar reads "Waiting for http://hpserver/home/default.aspx?gotodefault=true..." even though I did not enter the anything other than http://hpserver But then the page fails to load. As indicated in the troubleshooting document, http://hpserver:55000/enrollid/id.xml returns 1. However, https://hpserver:56000/enrollid/id.xml also returns 1 rather than 2. http://hpserver:55000/enrollid/id.aspx does return about a half page of XML, as the troubleshooting document indicates it should. Windows Firewall has two entries for Windows Home Server connector. One with a description of "No description provided" and one allowing C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server\Discovery.exe. The connector troubleshooter gives me 5 errors. The first is "The version of the Connector software does not match the version of Windows Home Server". This seems easy enough according to various sources; just run the install from \\hpserver\Software. But I can't even do that, since I cannot log on to that share. I tried with username of Administrator and a blank password. Of course, I get...

My HP Media Smart was up and running well with my wirkstations (2-XP & 1-Vista Ult). Then on the Vista laptop the server would no longer accept my password (which had not been changed). I performed a serve restore and also a factory reset. When I install the server software all goes well until it tries to install the Connector portion. It never gives me the opportunity to create a new password, it goes directly to the login and asks me to enter the password...which it doesn't acept, since the password shoulod have been deleted with the factory reset. So I reset the server and initialize from an XP machine all is good. Then when I try to install on the Vista machine-same problem with the password. It doesn't accept the password that was created on the XP machine. Any ideas are appreciated.

Hi there, I just bought a new mediasmart server and was able to install the software to one pc as well as setting the server up. There is only one hard drive (500GB, standard one with 470). The server became unresponsive after the second night on, and now when I turn it on: - all the hard drive lights are red - there is no hard disk activity after boot - no health light activity (it's solid purple) I tried to switch it on and off a few times and the situation doesn't change. I made some long browsing but neither the manual nor forums seem to have info on this (or I'm blind :) ). Can anyone help on what's going on? Cheers.

Hello All, I am thinking very hard about buying the mediasmart. I have done alot of reading here and i had a couple of questions. 1. How well does the remote OS backup/restore work? Is this more like a ghost server or the new deployement services offered by server 2008. 2. Has anyone setup two of these. one as the primary and the other one as a backup. I see that alot of people are using usb harddrives. Not sure i want to do that. I would prefer to use another server as a backup. 3. I am alittle fuzzy about the whole green drive issue. I have read on one forum not to use them and on yet another one they say yes you can use them. Is anyone currently using green drive without any issues? My primary focus for this server would be to be able to restore my os from the server and use the rest as a fileserver with some type of back in place in case it dies. I will later like to share photos home movies etc with my family.

Drive strategies - redundancy, JBOD

Hi, I am doing research before I purchase a EX470. I am particularly interested in how users aer setting up redundancy. From the screenshots and reviews, it seems like you have to specify whether you want to add a drive "to the pool" or use it for backup. Then, you choose specific files and folders you want to have redundancy (ie make copy to the backup drive(s)). While this is great and the JBOD option adds advantages over most NAS systems running RAID (ie just miror everything), it also adds some confusion. So my question is, what are some ways you guys have things setup? A few examples including which drives you have installed and how you have them set up would be appreciated. P.S. I may have missed something or misunderstood something about the way WHS handles data, please correct me if I have.

I recently purchased the EX470. I have a 1TB Seagate HDD (already installed) and I was in the proccess of trying to get the remote access setup. That in iself is an entirely different thread. Although I have read a bunch of the threads on here about setting this and that and a bunch of abbreviations, is there anywhere that explains networking solutions in noob language? I can setup my home network but thats about the extent of it.... Sorry I'm drifting off. I have a couple of "should already know this" questions: 1. How am I supposed to turn off my MSS? I just pressed and held the power button in the back twice and actually used the shutoff button in the WHS screen once. Ever since I used the one in WHS, my MSS doesn't seem to connect anymore. 2. I live in Okinawa, Japan and I'm using a Japanese ISP. I have a fiber optic connection and their "modem" is actually 2 pieces. A converter and what seems to be a router. Just to tell you I live in France, and all the PC and laptops in my house are installed with the XP/ XP media center in French. So I obviously bought the server in French too. I went to a shop called FNAC (never had a problem before) and got the server. Took it home and ran the installation CD on my main laptop, all went well, no problems, until....... I connected remotley to the server, and guess what............ The OS was in........... SPANISH. Great news. After a lot of calling around, HP - FNAC, it was a logistical problem with the shipping from FNAC. So I have to go back and change the server for another one. Great fun! Nigel
