I'm new to the Media Smart Server and just bought mine yesteday and found this thread searching for answers. So far so good on everything working. I reviewed some of the past threads and I seen that there was a problem with installation of McAfee Total Protection. MY Windows Home Server has update and I now have McAfee Total Protection and the PV Connect on my menu bar. Should I be concern or has most of the problem been resolved?

I have just spoken with the developers of Accesstunes. The website is www.zeleksoftware.com . This software, in its present state, runs on a computer and "serves" the entire itunes library over the internet (protected files, too, if the "client" computer is authorized - i.e., one of your 5 computers that can share the DRM tracks from itunes). You can log in via a website (with user name and password) and it runs in your web browser, and, even better, you can actually run itunes on the remote machine and (with an add-in on that machine) you can have your media streamed from the "serving" computer to the "client computer" with full itunes interface. I had a long discussion with them and they said that my request for an accesstunes WHS add-in was the first they had received. However, as we spoke, they indicated that if there was enough support from the community that they would be interested in developing an accesstunes add-in for WHS. I asked them if I could post this to the community and they agreed. This would be unlike any other add-in presently out there. To my knowledge, there is no solution for streaming itunes music files...

McAfee removal help

I installed the McAfee add-in (but never registered). Well, my console locked up and I assumed that McAfee's indexing might be the culprit. Since I could only get the blank console screen, I went to RDP to wipe it out. I used add/remove programs to nix two McAfee items, and it went through the uninstall routines and erased the TopWHSaddin.msi from my addins folder. My console is since functional (not sure if it was due to McAfee removal or not)...but, lo, McAfee still shows as installed when I view my add-ins from the console. If I try to remove it from there, I get an "Uninstallation Failed" error. I've looked to see if I could find the msi online to at least put a copy in the addins folder and see if it'd work that way, but I had no luck. It doesn't seem to be hurting anything, but I'd still like to at least get rid of the McAfee entry in the console. How can I do that without the msi file in the addins folder?

I just placed an order for the EX470 and have a question regarding add-ins. I know how to install it once the MSI is on the system but how does it get there to begin with? Are you supposed to download it on your PC then copy it over or do you use a browser (IE? Firefox?) while logged into the WHS console to download it? I know it's trivial but I'd like to know what's correct. Does WHS even have a browser? It seems silly to log into a NAS using a console/remote screensharing session and browse the web/download that way instead of just doing it ony our desktop/PC.

I bought the WHS with the idea that I would would backup all of my PCs and laptops to one location and the backup the WHS to carbonite.com. It turns out they are incompatable. I didn't even think to ask if you needed an "add-in" to anything with the box. I'm beginning to wish I would have bought a regular PC with a big harddrive and made my own server. Too late now. I'm going to post this on the Back-up forum as well.

And when trying to install I get "install failed" and most the time the addins dont even show up in the available tab. ANY in this case means none of the addins will un-install. I did try to uninstall using a RDC. I dont want trash all of them just a couple of them. When i found out those two wouldn't leave i just tested with the rest and none would uninstall or re-install. Thanks. Eric

Slow add-in installs/uninstalls? Read this!

Hi Folks, I started noticing that my add-in installs were painfully slow on my server. Given how many times I installed/uninstalled the HP updates and PP1 betas, and now with the 1.3 and PP1 releases, I was concerned that I perhaps missed a defect somewhere in the HP software. But even without the HP software on the server, it was still painfully slow (we're talking 10minutes for a small add-in install). I finally used procmon to see what was going on and I quickly found the problem. My %QLOGS%/Additions.log file was MASSIVE and I saw WHS logging doing all sorts of lock/write/unlock operations on it. I removed the log file, and lo and behold, my add-in installation is back to its snappy self. So why is the log file so huge? By the look of the log contents, Microsoft enables verbose msiexec logging when starting the add-in installs. A simple add-in install generates about 200K of log info; given how much I had been messing with add-ins on my server throughout the year, it's not wonder it was so massive (the first entries in the log dated back to December!) This will be an issue for pretty much any WHS...

MSS Fan Control

NOTE: This Add-In is EXCLUSIVELY for the HP MediaSmart Server, EX470 or EX475. Do not attempt to use it on any other hardware. Think your unit is running warmer than you would like? Want to speed up those fans? When idling (i.e., not doing any "work") in normal ambient temperatures the MSS fans run at about half of their rated maximum speeds to maintain a balance between unit temperatures and quiet operation. As the workload and/or the ambient temperature increases, logic in the MSS increases the actual speed of the fans to maintain lower temperatures. Many of us have wanted increased fan speed at lower internal temperatures. Not that the HP settings are bad or even close to unrealistic, more that we believe that even lower temperatures will result in longer component life. We have experimented with SpeedFan and other utilities with limited success, especially since the HP logic will, at times, override the SpeedFan settings. (Discussion of this can be found in the SpeedFan thread over on http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1236&highlight= ) Alex "Big Al" Kuretz (Yakuza, the founder of MediaSmartServer.Net) has created an Add-In to simplify control of the upper and lower exhaust fans on the HP MSS. The Add-In, MSS...
