What about a new version of the hardware? Rght now, I see a first iteration box with the same chip/memory/disk that was first offered over a year ago. In this market, everything should be upgraded much more frequently than HP does for this product. How many notebooks & desktops is HP selling in Aug2008 that were the EXACT SAME configuration as Aug2007? How about at least a dual-core chip and 4GB RAM. Base config using SATA, but now about a SAS option?

I have to wonder why there isn't a TS thread. Anyway, so far, after 8 months... this seems to be more trouble than it's worth. Yes it does the job (at the searing speed of molasses in january) but nearly every day I have to fix something. Just remoted in yesterday and got notified it blue screened 3 times. Sure would be nice to get notified and have a clue as to why. Right now, I have one machine that refuses to connect (and it was... just decided not to be connected anymore) (somehow, I can't blame it). And I have a conflict. I have music files up and it "can't find 3 directories" in the music folder. But... I can get to the folder from every machine and they all show the 3 folders and everything in them. And yes, they can be run, played and/or downloaded. I have 4 500g seagates in it, btw. It came with two seagates, so I kept with the original brand. So far... not even slightly impressed.

Okay, I'm a novice at best. I am very close to buying a HP Media Smart Server but have several questions. Here is what I have and what I would like. 1.) I would like to use Media Monkey as my player of choice. I'm not a big fan of Windows Media Player or iTunes for that matter. Does this integrate well into HP MSS? 2.) All I need is to stream music (in the future video) to one location, which is a Denon receiver. I have about 400GB of music. 3.) I would like a really nice wireless remote control, like the big ones Sono's has. I don't need to wirelessly distribute music to different locations in the house, so I think this is probably overkill. I would really like to use Media Monkey as the software for any remote I need but I don't think you can do this. 4.) What configuration of HP Media Smart Server should I buy. How much memory should I get. I know I need about 1TB of HD for future growth, just dont know on the ram, or if there are different clock speed options. 5.) I have windows XP on my...

Is it possible to get support from HP for the Home Server? I thought I'd bounce a couple questions off their tech folks, but when you go to email support there is no selection that I found where I can properly categorize my issue. Secondly if I try to key in MediaSmart Server EX470 in the Support & Drivers area it comes back as it doesn't exist. Has anyone else seen this? Scott

Online Photo Album / Gallery -- Workflow Question

I am curious if there is a way to automate the website generation process for a photo album for all photos stored in the "Photos" public folder. If I am doing all my editing, renaming, etc in the public folder, it would be nice for there to be a software that autogenerates a simple web gallery of all images in that directory. It seems that the way that HP Photo Webshare works now is that it is duplicating the process and storing the reduced file size duplicate images. Does any software exist to automate the updating of the online photo gallery workflow? Thanks, Matt Tucker

I have had my HP MediaSmart Server since May 08, Yup less then 3 months. The blue portion of bay 4 led seems to have failed. The Red works just not the blue. Figured this out from the hidden holiday lights tip. (ctl, alt, shift, click on the server image) So my question is how do I get a replacement? I am tech savvy and feel I can replace the led if can find one. Don't know the specs or if HP can just send me a replacement. Looking for tips on how to replace and led part number. All Drives report healthy via console and I don't really see a need for this led at all execpt for installation or removal of a drive. It is really is not worth the time it would take to pack it up and mail it out for warranty coverage, Nor can I live with out my newly aquired server for the days or weeks it could take to be serviced. So I am looking for suggestions and reasons to have this fixed. Thanks in advance.

I now have two users registered and working well but cannot successfully add more and enable them to access webshare! Using the server console I can add new users and they are fully functional in WHS software. They can login and operate normally using the WHS login page. However the username and password is rejected by the HP Webshare page. Further investigation shows they are not added to the exisitng two in the Webshare database. There seems to be a fundamental disconnect between the Server console and the HP software. I had to manually assign management rights for photo webshare for the first two users despite setting it up in the console. I don't know how to manually add a new user to the HP database and should not have to. Any ideas how this software can be sorted? Or when HP will fix it? Thanks JohnI

I run a small micro-business out of my home office. I have several thousand web pages and other critical business folders on my home PC. Until I got my MediaSmart Server, I was too busy/lazy to back up my PC more often than once every few weeks. And, my kids were always running off with my external hard drive, so my Norton backup utility wasn't able to find its target. Had I experienced a hard drive failure, it could very well have put me out of business. I recently read that over 90% of small businesses which experience a significant data loss will go out of business within 6 months. It's also easier to share data files with my remote business partner using the server. Do you have a home based business? Do you use your MediaSmart Server to back it up or share files with remote partners or clients?

This server is driving me crazy after a week of fiddling around. I seem to have no control over it. I have posted the problems with webshare that despite setting up management rights and remote desktop to every user - each logon member gets a random selection of albums and no-one has any management control. No abilility to delete albums, to assign access or to manage them in any way? How do I get these controls to appear? The only way to add photos is one at a time and I have large libraries I want to add so this is just not practical. I have seen suggestions for hacking the Webshare database to set management rights. But it seems I have no way to access this. I can access the Server Console but this only has limited functionality and only acces that the shared folders. I have found no way to so far to have a proper working remote desktop - how can I break in to this server and get some basic functionality going? Thanks John I

Media Smart Server Issues

Have read several threads on this forum indicating that issues exist with the software (not sure if it HP or MS issues) which seem not have a clear resolution. For example I can set up users with all the necessary (remote access) accreditation and some of those accounts just don't work with the login and/or password rejected. If I were not an enthusiast I would have given up ages ago, the software seems far from finished and not fully functional but for the moment I will persevere. However the issue that is currently killing me is with the photo albums. I just don't seem to get any kind of management control panels to set up groups or delete albums or to assign rights. This is referenced in the documentation but with none of the user accounts do I have access to this control either local or remote. Albums I create seem to be randomly viewable by different users and they cannot be deleted. Any ideas?

Over the last 2 days my MSS keeps just shutting off. Hitting the power switch brings it back online. Checking the event viewer basically gives a generic message: The previous system shutdown at 9:49:05 PM on 7/6/2008 was unexpected. *DOH NO KIDDING* It has been running good hardware wise the last couple of weeks. The only thing that changed really was adding an APC UPS Backup 550, and installing the latest software for it. I have since removed the software, and am testing to see if having the cable plugged in is causing it. Or if the MSS is defective, reading the forums on We Got Served seems quite a few of the UK failures are with the Power Supply. I also have installed speed fan to keep it a bit cooler. I hope my new toy hasn't bit the dust yet.

I have a Vista laptop and 2 xp desktop machines. All are connected via a Linksys Gigabit router; which also has the server connected. I am using Pinnacle 10.7 on all machines for video shows we perform our services. I got the HP server because of the amount of large file videos we produce in a show and the ability to manage it in ONE place. However, I have been in contact with technical support to resolve a performance issue. When I select a file in the server from the Pinnacle software, the later creates a link or path. I then begin the edit process and subsequent rendering to create a DVD. The problem is the following: 1. When one of the other computers attached to the network tries to view a video file while another computer is rendering, the video becomes unstable and jitters quite a bit on the viewing computer. 2. When I render two separate files on two separete computers (attached to the Server via the router) I get a completed DVD; however, one of the DVDs will have distorted audio and sometimes stop and go motion on the video itself. In addition to the information provided...

I thought it would be fun to start a thread of the gear that I have, where it's set up and what it looks like. I'd love to hear/see what others have. My home network has 7 computers including the following: In the Guest Bedroom My Media Smart Server An old Compaq desktop PC (that I haven't turned on in awhile) In the basement: Netgear UPnP router Old Desktop PC running Windows 2000 Xbox 360 In the office: Desktop PC running XP Old Laptop running XP In the Family Room: Gateway Media Center PC In the Kitchen: Dell laptop running Vista and my newest addition, the HP Touchsmart iQ775. HP just announced a new generation of the Touchsmart, so I'm already feeling out of date!
