MediaSmart Connect x280n - Internet radio options?

I am about to buy a MediaSmart Connect x280n but I would like to get some information from a current owner. In MediaSmart mode (i.e. not as an extender) is it possible to play Internet radio stations other than through Live365? I seem to recall that if you create a playlist in WMP11 with a regular HTTP MP3 stream you can play that playlist on the x280n. If so, can the stream be played without the PC (e.g. by adding it as a favorite)? Ultimately I owuld like to use my Logitech Harmony remote to set up an action that turns the unit on and starts playing my favorite Internet station without the need for the PC to be on. Please let me know if this is possible. Thanks, Arnoud

Hi, everyone. thanks for having me here. Thsi is my first post and I hope I am posting at right place. If not and I am asking the question all ready been asked, please guide me to right place. Thank you. I recently purchased a Hp MediaSmart Connect x280n. My set up is, MediaSmart to tv via hdmi cable. I also have desktop pc running windows vista with large hard drives. I backed up some of the movies to create video library. The movies are riped in vob file. Using magic dvd ripper, I can see and play the movie on my pc using windows media center on my desktop. I can also see the files on my tv via mediaSmart connect. But when I tried to play it to the tv I get "No vedeos were found. Either there are no vedeos. or your vewing an empty folder". This is the part I am stuck. I read somewhere about creating a symbolic file, but direction was not clear enough for me to make anything out of it. When I rename one of the vob file to mpeg, the movie plays fine. But I aslo read that I am not...

I can change them using the red button, but I was wondering if there was a way to set it to default to "off".

Hi Guys, Just purchased the HP Connector and one of the first things I have noticed is that when I open WMC on my laptop and go to "TV + Movies" I have the option to "play dvd" but when I access the Media Connector's WMC there is no option for this. Does anyone know why and is there a way for me to get DVD'S straight from disc to TV rather than copying the files to HDD?

Hello All, Has anyone tried using Movie Collector MCE with the HP MediaSmart Connect? I've been playing around with it for the past week and this is an awsome program. It pulls in all the information on your DVD movies from several sources on the internet and populates a database of which you can view with MediaCenter. It works flawlessly on my MediaCenter PC and appears on my MSC in extender mode. The only problem, is when I press play on the extender, I get the following error message: "Invalid Application" error stating "Unable to launch 'MovieCollector_MCE'" and asking me if I want to disable the application. I gone back and forth with the author of this software and he can't figure out why it want work. He doesn't have a MSC, so he's currently at a lost. SilkRod p.s Here's a link to the software: http://www.collectorz.com/movie/windows-media-center-mce.php

So I was one of the first people to get this unit...I traded my DSM-520 for it and was excited to get it. I have the ex470 MSS (love love this thing, good job HP) as well. Well I have finally decided to get rid of it after 5 months. I purchased the Popcorn Hour a-110 that plays everything. I really like the x280n looks and interface (albeit slow as hell). But the lack oif being able to play MKVs and the ablilty not to see playlists in the playlist menu (have to goto server ->music->folders-> playlists) and other quirks and NO UPDATES yer. What the hell??? What a piece of crap!!! I was cool with it at first knowing that they would update firmware here and ther, but NOTHING yet. My dad also has the TVIX 6500 and it blow this thing away. I figured I would try the PCH A-110 since I read a lot about this and it passes HD Audio. I am sorry but HP needs to produce a product that they upgrade, that is the only way to keep up with technology!!! ss

Troubles with WMP11 on MSC

I very recently completed building my first desktop PC. After much hand wrenching I decided to install Vista Home Premium (my gut said to install XP Pro). I have not installed any codec packages as of yet. The problem I am having with WMP11 + MSC is that the vast majority of the folders and HDDs I have designated in WMP11 to watch and share do not show up on the MSC but they do when running WMP11 on my PC. All of my video files are mpeg2 (.mpg) or wmv and they all play in WMP11 when played on my PC. For several months I was running Vista Ultimate on a laptop and had no problems with the MSC seeing everything that I designated in WMP11. This laptop had lots of video stuff and I am sure a whole lot more codecs installed. I no longer have access to this laptop. Could it be codec issue? Any other suggests? My windows firewall is turned off and I can see and play all of my files using VMC. The reason for wanting WMP11 to work is that I can use tagging for my video files. Thanks!

I have had my MSC for a while now. I use it as an excenter to my vista media center. The device came with a disk full of software that I have yet to load. To my knowledge, this software is really only needed if you are using the HP interface. Will I gain anything in the vista extender interface by installing the software? When it comes to installing software I try not to do it blindly. I have my VMC box set up very carefully when it comes to codecs. So, I hesitate to load anything that is not needed. Thanks in advance, Scott

Improving wireless performance

I tried to post this as an article, but there is a review process, so it may take some time to show up. I hope you find it useful. ------------------------- Everyone knows that for best wireless performance with a Digital media receiver, especially when streaming HD video, one has to use an "n" router. What people usually don't know is that a wireless router needs to meet requests from all clients (including the legacy b, g, and a) so any client with a legacy receiver (say a printer with wireless "g", or a laptop with wireless "b") can in effect slow down or downgrade your overall performance. The easiest solution is of course to buy an "n" router with DUAL and simultaneously working radios (one at 2.4 GHZ and one at 5 GHz). You use two separate SSIDs and you can use one (the 5 GHz) in dedicated "n" mode and the other (2.4 GHz) in legacy "b/g/" mode. However, even if you have an "n" router with a single radio (or two radios but only one can be up - like the Apple Airport), there is a way to improve performance by still using your OLD wireless router.
I have recently been able to give Vista Ultimate Media Center a test drive. I am using a P4 2.8 GHz laptop with 1.5GB DRAM. I have cable internet and my network is wired 'g'. Most of my media is on a home built Linspire (linux OS) server with a few other drives scattered around my network. In total around 3.5TB of mostly video. What I am observing is that Media Center seems to be in a constant never ending discovery/updating mode. I have 12 'watch' folders enabled and I assume that if I want to be able to access the content in these folders using Media Center and MSC they need to be designated as 'Watch Folders'. Now I realize that first time discovery will take some time but it seems to nearly start over each time I power down and restart. Also, when I power on the MSC it is usually well behind where MC is on my PC and therefore is quite slow and sluggish. The most troubling aspect is that my higher bitrate mpeg2 files that play smoothly and continuously on my other network media players stop and start as though the streaming is not keeping...
