Remote access using your domain name (not with TZO)

Hi, I have just ordered an HP Data Vault server to compliment our existing SBS network, primarily to backup the workstations. I additionally want to grant some users so that they can access files remotely without having to VPN into the network proper. We have some spare static IP addresses and I want to assign one of them via the static NAT function on the Cisco firewall to the HP box. I would open port 80 and 443 on the firewall to the external IP address. I understand that at this point I may have a self signed certificate, we have one already on the SBS server signed by a third-party, I am happy to keep the certificate as is on the HP box. My question is: Will this just allow the connection to go through and thus be accessible via that IP address? I would edit the DNS externally so that for example server2.domain.com points to this new static IP address. Or, is it best to open up the relevant ports on the firewall, and accept that I need to use an alternative domain name to access the server to get remote access working proper? I have read that...

EX490 starting from scratch, which is best?

Hi Well, I have completely re-organized and re-tagged my entire music-collection (250+ GB of mp3, flac and various other formats), and now I'm, thinking about resetting my EX490 to re-collect and re-index this collection before I hook up my new Sonos system. Question is, how is the best way to do this? Should I just copy the entire collection to a public music folder on the server, or should I enable Media Collector to do this for me? I seem to recall Media Collector taking weeks to finish this job the first time around, but on the other hand, if it makes it difficult to share my music via Twonky then it might be the only solution. Help please :)

Hello I have an EX490 and it seems to work fine, albeit that the processor is pegged at %100 very often. I've setup the server/users such that everyone within my Lan has an account, same name/pass as on their computer. Photos are in the Photos directory, music in music, etc. Now, when i connect (from any computer) to the WHS Mediasmart server website, i get the options on that page starting from left: Homeserver console, mediastreamer, HP photo publischer, HP photo viewer, etc. Now, i thought that when i clik on HP photo viewer i would see some sort of selection of all the pictures in the photo directory. What happens is that the WHS first asks me to log in. When i try to log in using the local lan user/pass for the computer i'm on, it does not accept it. Remember, i do have user accounts on the WHS machine identical to each local computer user accounts (id/pass). The only way to get passed this log on screen is to use the id/pass from the account i set up for remote login. I don't understand this, as i'm logged in within the Lan, and trying to use an...

Hello all. Starting yesterday (March 19th) two of my three internal HDD in my WHS are running high temperatures accroding to the HomeServer SMART add-in. The temps are ranging from 109 degrees to 113 degrees fahrenheit. Is this normal? What can I do to keep the drives running cool? The weather has started to warm up here, but what am I going to do in the heat of summer? I'm just concerened that the drives are going to get fried. Thanks. /Mick Biel

Hi, had two disks in my HP MediaSmart server, besides the system disk. One of the broke and I am now about to replace it. In the Windows Home Server Console I can see four disk. Under "Non Storage Hard Drives" I have a disk in status "Non Added" Under "Storage Hard Drives" I have two disks in status "Healthy" and one in status "Missing". My question is: If I don't won't to loose any data, does it matter in what order I do "Add" on the "Not Added" disk and "Remove" on the "Missing" disk?

I have managed to assign on of the five addresses to my PFSense firewall, but I have not found a capability on the 3800HGV-B to setup a static route to route the other four addresses to my Firewall. The usint seem to have a limitation to only assign one IP to a single MAC address and there seems to be NO Statis Route facility. My PFSense is in route mode as I also have Comcast Cable router so I use it as a Wan Aggregator what works great. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hello all. I'm a EX475 owner and new to this forum. I need to make a decision on what to do next with my box and I'm hoping to get a little input from you all before I make my decision. To start with; about all I use my MSS for is to back up two home PCs, run a Teamspeaker Server, and remote desktop into my PCs from work. However, I'm normally quite a tinkerer and feel like I might like to get more out of it, - I just haven't quite gotten there yet. The issue I've recently started having issues when logging into the server console both from on & off site. Off site I get a script error '_pendingCallbacks[...].async' is null or not an object (see photo at link below) http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu316/cwlithgow/tech/remoteservererror.jpg From onsite I get something similar, something like "string not correctly formated," unfortunately I don't have the exact error or a screenshot. Once I finally am able to get into the console (it may take 2 or 3 tries) I went to see about an update or what version of things I'm running. Unfortunately my last update is labeled as xx/xx/xx. http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu316/cwlithgow/tech/lastupdate.jpg When I click...

So, are my files being duplicated onto multiple drives? How can I tell if the capacity does not change?

First post here , and I am the proud owner of a new Data Vault. Running Vista on my PC I am trying to transfer around 5 TB of data into the MSS. I have an external HDD enclosure that connects via USB. If I connect the ext HDD directly to my PC it will take forever to move the files across. I have tried a suggestion read on this forum, to add the HDD into the MSS but not as part of the storage pool , but I cant figure out how to access the files on the newly added(non storage pool) drive so that I can move them across. I have also tried connecting the external HDD firectly to the USB port on the MSS but again I cant figure out how to move the files across. Is it essential to do this via remote server? Any suggestions would be most appreciated Cheers

Remote Access Webpage

I'm setting up remote access to a "family" folder on my EX490 that has selected pictures in it. I've adjusted the security settings for the folder to allow access only to this folder. This seems to work fine, but the remote webpage also shows website links to the server's home page, media streamer, photo publisher, and photo viewer. My idea was just to provide my family access to a folder with pictures that they could download, view etc. But, with the other webpage links, they give you a workaround the security settings. For example, if you click on the link for the server home page, now you have access to a bunch of links like the media streamer. So now they have access to all the music, videos etc. Also, the photo viewer shows everything. I saw the other posts on the photoviewer and that is a lost cause. But if I could just adjust the webpage, I think I will solve my problem. There doesn't seem to be any configurations in the server settings to adjust the web page. Are there any addin's or methods to modify the web page to remove these extra links? Any help is appreciated.

Has anyone actually managed to get the Intel Virtualisation technology extensions working with the above combination of hardware...? Or ANY EX48x/49X hardware/Intel based Proc that supports VT-x, for that matter? Upgrade went well, eveything looks OK now that i have set the BIOS correctly (set via AFUWIN/AMIFLASH as no KVM cable!) but CPUID and the Intel CPU Identification app show that VT-x is not enabled (neither is speedstep acording to the intel app) but all is set and loaded correctly in the BIOS....??? Cant boot a 64Bit VM on VirtualBox without VT-x (VB DOES support 64Bit hosts on 32Bit guests, as long as you have VT in the proc) so I'm kind of stuck now, as need to get my 2008R2 DC moved onto my WHS (My ESX Hosts are costing me fortune in electricity!!! :) ) In the original EX48x CPU upgrade thread, Cadman said that it WAS working for him, but i just cant get the thing to show up in windows!!! Any help or advice greatly appreciated..... ta Dongers

I'm close to just making the purchase but I'm curious if you guys have duplicating on this. I almost feel like it's not worth the investment because I could always re rip my discs if I lose them. The light were now blinking red/purple. I have loaded the recovery disk on another PC ( both server and Pc uses fixed IP addresses ) and started it up. The problem is now that the automatically discover that the SW is doing doesn't work. My PC can not find the the HP server any more ( to conclude the SW update ). 1. I removed firewalls on both sides ( didn't help ) 2. I used a cross cable direct in between in the two ( didn't help ) I have checked with remote desktop that I have access in between the two. I have checked with wireshark, and it seems like that HP server doesn't answer ( when blinking red/purple ). Anyone know what to do next ? How does the SW update do when when looking for the HP server on the network ? Is there anyway to update the SW when connected to the server, using remote desktop ?

I need help. I can't get the windows home server console to launch when I remote in from either my macs or my pc desktop nor can I do a server recovery When I had been logging in recently from my macs, remote desktop would show an error stating that space on the C drive was running low. I figured the server knew what it was doing and would balance itself. Over the weekend, the c drive ran out of space. Not sure if that's what's causing my general errors, but I imagine that's not a good thing. So, since I couldn't get the console to launch, even after rebooting a few times, I decided a recovery was in order. I tried to run the server recovery disk in both my macs running parallels and my desktop pc, both connected directly to my airport extreme router that has the MSS directly connected to it. Unfortunately, the recovery failed every time. After putting the server into recovery mode, I got a few errors that said "failed step 3 of 4", both on the macs and the PC. Then I figured it was the apple router so I hooked them all up...

It is single mode (they do offer ones with complete JBOD & RAID solution) in other words each drive is accessible individually. Enclosure supports USB & eSATA and I have it connected through eSATA. Had it for few weeks and works great with WHS.
