I'm considering using an external drive to backup WHS. Part of my decision is whether this backup is secure. If someone was through nefarious means acquire my external drive, could he replicate my WHS Server and then look at my data? The existing windows XP backup utility can require that a password be used to open the backup for restoring purposes. Is their equivalent functionality on WHS?

When I power on the unit, I can see Power light and Network light, but Health light and hard drive light never show (it spins), my router can never see it, and the installation can't locate the server, I am getting nowhere! HP support says return it to the seller, but before I do that, may be there is some setup in my computer I may have missed? I am running Vista 64-bit Home premium, D-link DIR-655

I have an just upgraded my sons Laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro L300D) to Windows7. It runs AVG9 antivirus. Since the upgrade my EX470 Mediasmart server displays the "no antivirus installed or out of date notication" when the laptop is shut down. This of course is broadcast to my other networked machines. If the laptop is switched back on the notification goes away after a few minutes. This is not the AVG as I tried Kapersky 2010 trial version and it gave identical results. Anyone else had this problem? and a fix - I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the WHS connector but this made no difference. I am running WHS with power pack2 with Mcafee security suite on the server

I logged on to my server with remote desktop one day to notice the C: drive (the 20GB partition) had only 10 MB of free space. I started looking through the folders and discovered that 12GB of space was being taken up by logfiles named like ex091107.log located in a folder named c:\windows\system32\logfiles\W3SVC1. Upon opening one of the files they appear to be IIS logs of some sort. One of the files was 1.5GB in size! Does anyone know what is going on? How can I turn off this logging, is it essential? One of the lines inside the file said this, repeating over and over: 2009-11-07 00:53:00 W3SVC1 192.168.0.9 PROPFIND /photo - 80 - 192.168.0.5 Microsoft-WebDAV-MiniRedir/6.0.6002 501 0 0 Thanks!
Hi, I am a newbee! I have a HP smartmedia EX475 with 2TB (4x500GB drives). Added 2 of these dived a year ago. I have 3 desktops and a laptop being backed up every night by this unit. All was well! until a week ago one of my machines stopped being backed up. If i look in the back up logs i see this error: " an error occurred reading or writing from server storage. D:\folders\{ some numbers } \ machinename. C.VolumeCluster.4096.dat Readfile 1117" I finally installed the WHS toolkit 1.1 and found the following error. "Checking if Remote Desktop proxy port is allowed by Windows Firewall...... FAIL: Remote Desktop proxy port is not allowed" All other checks passed. any idea how to troubleshoot this? Why would this just stop being backed up? Thanks Andy

Clicked ok and got a progress window for about 30 seconds. Window went away and got the Server Console window. Cursor has an hour glass and can't do anything. I assume the software is updating but have no way of telling since the progress window is gone. Anyone have any suggestions? I've searched the forum but couldn't locate anything on this particular problem. Thanks in advance...

I have a 250gb external drive that has over 150gb of software on it. I have been using this to save and then install software on my various home machines. I thought I could simply plug it in to my Home Sever and move files from it to a shared drive. However WHS only allows you to restore files from backups it has made on that server. I guess I'm going to have to connect the drive to one my machines and move the content to WHS that way but with 100mb ethernet connections I'm currently limited to, that will take hours. It would be nice to be able move files directly to and from an external drive.

I am trying to be energy-conscious and have my MediaSmart EX475 run only when needed - which is not often. I have installed LightsOut, but the LightsOut client will start the server whenever any computer on the network starts, even if no one accesses it. What I would like to have (I think this feature is available in the newer model) is a simple utility that will allow me to remotely (and at will) put the server in standby and wake it up. I have tried several utilities out there, but the only one that I could get to work reliably is Prof Shutdown. It finds the Mac address of the server automatically, and lets me put it into standby and wake it up very nicely. The only catch is the steep price ($130) of the software, although if I am only interested in waking the server up they also have a freeware version. Does anyone know of a reliable shareware alternative that does both standby and wakeup?

Hi, I know people have been reporting this problem but I cant see any solutions for it on any thread? Is this because there isn't one? I cant believe HP have released version 3 and not fixed something as serious as this. The problem I am talking about is of course the one where users can access all of your photos/videos/music via media streamer even though in WHS settings you have restricted them. This makes the media streamer program completely useless as I am now either going to have to disable it all together (which will stop the iPhone thing working) or delete the users from the system. Does anybody know a workaround and if anybody from the HP Media Smart team is reading this why haven't you fixed this? Thanks a lot.

Hi - I've done a lot of googling on this topic but don't have a clear explanation for what is happening. I have my mp3 collection residing on the Music share on the server with file duplication turned on. Everything was a-ok for over a month, until a few days ago when an alert informed me that one of the mp3's had a file conflict. I went out to the share and noticed the file is still there, but the filesize is very small, a few kb's instead of the 2 or 3 MBs the mp3 used to be. Some articles seemed to indicate a problem with one of the harddisks that a chkdsk could possibly fix - but with file duplication turned on, wouldn't that mean a copy of the file is on another disk and therefore intact? How do I recover this file? If you need more information or logs of some sort please let me know - this is my first posting and I'm not sure what folks would need to help me. [EDIT] I've got some more info to add which may help. The error that is displaying when I click on the Details button of...

Hey...getting frustrated...thought I would post here...lots of experts. Whenever I map file shares from my PC, to my mediasmart server, next time I reboot my pc, they are all disconnected, even though I have asked them to be reconnected at startup. So that's the first issue that lead to the second. Normally, to reconnect the shares, I have to simply "disconnect" and then remap them again. But today, all of sudden, I am getting a different error when I connect, stating: "The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occurred: the referenced account is currently locked out and may not be logged on to." So, I jump on the Console and check "Shared Folders". I see all the standard shares (photos, software, etc), as well as the user shares I have created for different family members. In the case above, I have tried connecting to my Public, Software, Photos, and Music shares, and that that same error. My next step, I try right clicking on the Shared Folders individually, (from inside Console still) and choose "open". I am not even able to open them from the Console! I did upgrade the CPU recently, but that should not be the issue. The server is on my desk in open air flow. I do NOT know how to check CPU temps- maybe it is the CPU. Any suggestions.
