Hi! Just got my EX470 and have been thinking of what if the pre-installed O/S 500GB drive fails? What can I do to ensure I can quickly recover. Is there a recommended way to image the O/S drive by Norton Image, etc. and keep it off-line? Then, if the system drive is currupt/inaccessible, etc. I can just pop a new 500GB drive and restore the image to it? I do have 2 1.5TB and 1 1TB drives that I plan to install on Friday. Thanks!

I notice several people on this forum have had great luck getting the Computer Restore function to work. I have had no luck. I have downloaded the latest Restore CD, to no avail. The restore wizard takes me through all the steps with no problems, but then when it comes to "finding my server" it is never successful. I have tried both the automatic search function as well as the manual. The manual search gives me a "network error" prompt, which is strange because my server is wired to the router as is my computer. Any ideas? Thanks.

My HP MediaSmart Server was performing nightly backups of one of my desktops which is about 200 gig. I need to restore the complete system because when HP returned the desktop after replacing the power unit they "scrambled" Windows and none of my applications appear to be installed even though they are in the subdirectories under Program Files. I have subsequently successfully restored Windows from the Recovery CDs. 1. However, my question is : How do I - or can I - restore the complete system from the backup ?? Does the backup include absolutely everything - apart from the Page File for example which is on the exclusion list ?? 2. Also I tried to find my Outlook Express email messages file in the backup under Documents and Settings/Administrator/Identities etc. and it was not there ... ? I also looked in the equivalent place for the other users and they were not there either.... I would be grateful for any information or insight.... Thanks

I have a laptop, which has been backuped up last on Oct 31 via wireless connection to my WHS. Now I can remote desktop to the console and remote connect to the WHS console, no login problems and still actually connected, but the backup will not start when attempting Manual Backup and does not perform Automatic backups anymore. The option to [Configure Backup] searches but no longer finds my laptop information, even though it is listed as a connected computer. The Remote Access Settings are still valid from my laptop wirelessly, since I can still run operations from here, but the backups no longer allow connection. Any ideas on this one? ORA

Hello, I currently have a series of hard drives for various reasons. External: Western Digital MyBook 500GB USB2.0 Documents (R:) IcyDock eSata dock Internal: 3 x Samsung SpinPoint HD501LJ 500GB SATAII Hard Drive 16MB Cache - OEM 1. Two partitions: Windows (C:) and My Documents (D:) 2. One partition: Programs Installables Games (E:) 3. One partition: My Backup (Y:) Just purchased two Samsung Spin Point F1 750GB Internal SATA Hard Drives and have a third on the way. The reason for the most recent purchases of the new hard drives is because I noticed that one of the original drives (all less than a year old) started making a 'ticking' noise. My first reaction was to backup all my important data onto two different hard drives. What I am looking to achive: I want to create a system which is almost completely fail safe. I shall use the R: drive to store my documents in a remote location every month or so, I may even upload everything using my Gmail drive. The IcyDock shall be used to make backups of everything (from C:, D:, E:) with another drive I have ordered: Samsung SpinPoint HD103UJ F1 1TB 7200RPM SATA 3GB/s 32MB...

Hello, I am new to this forum and a soon to be owner of the HP Media Smart Server. I have simple questions that anyone who can answer for me would be great. 1. I plan to add 3x - 1TB drives to the server and then start to backup all my digital pictures. When they copy over to the server will they all be in only pool of data ? or will it be spread across seprate drive bays ? 2. If all my pictures are backed up to the servers hard drives, and one of the internal drives fail, what will happen to the pictures on that drive ? Are they lost ? will they be restored when I put a new drive in ? 3. How does the folder duplication work ? What I would really want is 3x backups of all my pictures. Is this possible ? Will the folder duplication work on external drives plugged into the server via USB? I will have more questions depending on the answers I get. Any help would be great. Thanks'

Does anyone know of a way to backup my server off-site and on-line? I bought the WHS with the idea that I would would backup all of my PCs and laptops to one location and the backup the WHS to carbonite.com. It turns out they are incompatable. I didn't even think to ask if you needed an "add-in" to anything with the box. I'm beginning to wish I would have bought a regular PC with a big harddrive and made my own server. Too late now. I posted a similar thread on the "add-in" forum.

It would sure save a lot of set up time. Transfering docs and files is easy enough but it's the programs I want to transfer. Anyone got any ideas?

Hi, I used the HP Recovery DVD after my MediaSmart Server gave me a solid red health light indication that the OS was bad! This process took about 60 minutes after which the Home Server Console Re-Installed onto my laptop and I was able to get back on my home server to find that ALL THE DATA HAD BEEN WIPED AND NOTHING HAD BEEN RESTORED! Has anyone else had this experience? Why was all my data on the data drive wiped? How can I get it back? My HP Laptop did the same thing last week and now that all the data has gone from the server I have nothing! No Photos, no laptop back-up file, no paperwork, NOTHING. William

Originally, my main computer had two hard drive volumes, C: and D: My MediaSmart performed the automatic backups for about a week just fine, but now I removed one of the volumes, D:, completely from my main system and used it for a server storage expansion. Now when my MediaSmart attempts to automatically perform a backup of the main system, it backs up Volume C: just fine, then encounters an error when attempting to backup Volume D:, obviously since it is no longer within my system. I've looked through and attempted to remove Volume D: from the backup list with no luck. Is there a way to set the backup settings so that it no longer looks for Volume D:? Or will I have to remove the entire PC backup from my homeserver, and start fresh?

I am running two HP WHS servers in my home office. One is on a wireless N network for all the laptops and one is on the ethernet for the desk tops. I can access both servers from several of my computers and have been manually backing up critical data from one WHS to the other, but it would be great if I could set up certain folders on the WHS servers to automatically back themselves up on the other server. Or better keep the folders syncronized. But since they are not on the same leg of the same network they dont see each other. In fact, both the ethernet hub and the wireless hub are connected to the same router and I can in fact see all my computers from any other computer on either network, the fact that the two WHS servers will not see anything not on their particular leg is causing the problem. Is there a way I can get them to talk with each other without having to move data manually?

I have been trying to backup data files (Word, PowerPoint) to a new computer. Some copy just fine, but certain ones will not copy at all. Whether I drag or right click to copy, no icon appears when I drop, no Copying... box appears; nothing at all happens, except the file window ceases to respond and I have to forcibly end each related task on my Desktop, then wait for 30 seconds or so for the Desktop to reappear. I have tried using each of the backup copies from that computer and all respond the same way. I have tried the procedures on multiple computers on my network. Any ideas? These are all Windows XP Pro sp2 computers on a gigabit network with tons of hard drive space, at least 1GB RAM and fast processors.
