Setting Up Router Port Forwarding

On your MediaSmart Server, you can allow remote access (incoming requests from the Internet) by configuring three open ports on the Windows Home Server firewall. Port 80 will accept Web requests. Port 443 is for SSL requests. Port 4125 is for remote desktop proxy requests. To begin the configuration, open the Windows Home Server Console, and click Settings. Click on Remote Access and select Turn on Web Connectivity. Your Server will then perform tests to see if it can automatically configure your router using UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) architecture. If Windows Home Server determines that your router is not configured for remote access, click the Configure Router button to configure it using UPnP. For many routers, this step proceeds quickly and easily. However, depending upon the router you are using, you may experience some challenges getting port forwarding configured. If you or a friend is having trouble setting up port forwarding on your router for remote access to a home server, take a look at www.portforward.com . This site offers detailed walkthroughs on how to set up port forwarding, FAQs, and other helpful tips for routers and firewalls. Thanks to the folks at PortForward!

Access Denied error trying to access WHS shares from XP Machine

I have a windows XP laptop that gets an error when trying to open any of my WHS shares. The error \\servername\sharename is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions . I can access the shares without issue from my Vista machines. My user account and password are not identical on all of my machines but the Vista machines do not seem to have a problem regardless of the username. The passwords, regardless of the username, are all the same on these machines. The XP machine can only access the Music and the root of the Users shares (but not any of the actual user directories) on WHS. Before you go down the road of make the usernames the same... I have now changed them all to be idenitcal to no avail. Anybody have any ideas?

Passwords do not match!

Hi, I have successfully installed the Windows Home Server Console on my computers at home except for one that are getting the message that the passwords do not match and I don't understand why? I install the software from the CD. I create a useraccount for this computer with the same login-name as the computer's, and I give it the same password as it has when loggin in to the computer, and, yes, it is a strong password with several uppecase, lowercase and other "strange" characters. BUT it still says that the passwords do not match! The only difference I can think of is that I have set this particular computer not to have remot access, but I thought that this only means that you cannot log in to the server when you are "outside", via Internet??? When trying to syncronize the passwords it says that I have given the wrong password for the server. I have then tried to erase the account on the server, re-created the account, changed the password for this account several times, and on the computer as well... Any ideas? Regards, Dag

I'd like to replace the standard Home Server Security Certificate with one that I buy from a Certificate Authority so that people who access photos don't see the severe warning message that always appears when they connect to my server. I'd be grateful for suggestions on how to do this.

I spoke with one of our McAfee contacts regarding the frequent and frustrating renewal notifications we have been getting on our MediaSmart Servers. After working through the McAfee team, I have now been asked by McAfee to let you know that: "Mcafee understands their frustration and apologizes for the notifications -- the users won't be getting any renewal emails in the near future." They also asked me to let you know that they hope you will take advantage of the 7 month trial, and that McAfee is "dedicated to making this a seamless solution." Thanks for responding and addressing this situation, McAfee!

A recent article in CNET brings attention to two new policies from U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The policies state that “Customs agents can routinely — as a matter of course — seize, make copies of and “analyze the information transported by any individual attempting to enter, reenter, depart, pass through, or reside in the United States.” (See policy #1 and #2 .)” A very scary proposition for a business person that travels internationally. It could be challenging to return from a business trip with acquired documents or notes from the trip and to have Homeland Security seize your laptop. They are lookoing for information that could reveal terrorists, drug dealers and people violating copyright infringements. As CNET states; “Are you sure your iPod and laptop have absolutely no illicitly-downloaded songs? You might be guilty of a felony .)
