Hard Drive Capacity

With file duplication turned on, how can I tell if my files are being duplicated? I have the system drive 1.5 TB capacity showing at 1.36TB I have 3 WD 2 TB drives all showing capacity at 1.82 TB (the same as they did when I installed them) However, in the pie chart to the right (v3.0) Duplication says 84GB. So, are my files being duplicated onto multiple drives? How can I tell if the capacity does not change?

data transfer help

First post here , and I am the proud owner of a new Data Vault. Running Vista on my PC I am trying to transfer around 5 TB of data into the MSS. I have an external HDD enclosure that connects via USB. If I connect the ext HDD directly to my PC it will take forever to move the files across. I have tried a suggestion read on this forum, to add the HDD into the MSS but not as part of the storage pool , but I cant figure out how to access the files on the newly added(non storage pool) drive so that I can move them across. I have also tried connecting the external HDD firectly to the USB port on the MSS but again I cant figure out how to move the files across. Is it essential to do this via remote server? Any suggestions would be most appreciated Cheers

It is single mode (they do offer ones with complete JBOD & RAID solution) in other words each drive is accessible individually. Enclosure supports USB & eSATA and I have it connected through eSATA. Had it for few weeks and works great with WHS.

Storing local application data on D: drive ?

Hi all, I'm a new EX-495 user (or really X510 as it is sold here). I bought the WHS as a small low-power server, on which I could also run some virtualized operating systems like Linux. Upon receiving the mediasmart, I completed the setup, and installed vmware server (connecting through Remote Desktop Connection). I then proceeded to create a virtual machine running a Linux installation. So far, so good, however, it's not clear to me exactly how storage is managed with WHS. I understand there are 4 types of hard disks: 1/ standard disk, added to the storage pool, will be automatically mapped/accessed to the storage available on the D: drive 2/ backup drive 3/ un-managed drive, should not be used by the WHS components, but can be accessed by the local applications installed on the mediasmart machine. 4/ system drive: a partition of 20 gigabytes is allocated to the C: system drive, the rest is added to the storage pool D: . In my box, I just have one drive, i.e. the system drive split between C: and D: . I installed VmWare server on the 20 gigabytes C: system drive, and for now I also created my virtualized...

How to partition a drive in the Server

So I bought a new drive to use for server file duplication in a Mediasmart EX490 server and just added it in. When I got ot he console I can see the drive in there but when I go through the "Add" wizard I end up getting a message that states that "The drive does not seem to have a partition created. Please create a partition and restart the server". I have tried to restart the server but still get the same message but I can't figure out how to go about partitioning the drive as there are no options for this and I can't seem to see the drive anywhere on my PC. Anyone have any thoughts?

So I may want to expand storage - esata enclosures

So are there any cheapish but good enclosures that will allow port multiplying. I don't know that much about port multiplying but it sounds like I can multiple drives to the one esata port? Any recommendations? I obviously don't want to spend as much as I did on my 490. It would be awesome if someone made a case that matched the exterior of the Mediasmart server but that's just a fools hope I'm sure.

Seagate HDD in EX495

Hey All, Bit the bullet, took the plunge and ordered an EX495. I should get it by weeks end. I was wondering if anyone with a 495 could let me know which model of 1.5TB Seagate is in it. My plan is to drop it in directly and setting up duplication. I've heard and read fo problems with the WD greens and want to avoid that hassle. So, Seagate is the way to go... unless someone has a better solution that will be more quiet?? Thanks in advance, Grant
