Categories: Networking and Remote Access
This is my last resort attempt on this issue. I've searched the web and have found no solutions; I've searched the forums here and I've found no solutions either. Hopefully somebody can help.
I've had remote access working through homeserver.com for a while. I had two Vista x86 machines, and they were working fine...in fact everything was working fine.
Now, I went and did a complete rebuild of one of my machines with Win7 64 bit. I can RDC to and from this machine. I can access the the HP Media Smart Server through the console. When I connect through my homeserver.com portal I can get to files AND the other Vista 32bit machine. BUT, when I try to connect to my 64bit machine, I get an error that says: "Cannot Connect to your home computer. Check your network connections and make sure you home computer is not blocked by a firewall.......".
As I said, everything worked fine until I upgraded this one machine to 64bit Win7, and the problem is ONLY with this one machine; the Vista 32bit machine can still be accessed remotely.
Now, has anybody heard of issues with Win7 64bit and remote access? Is there a setting in the firewall I need to change? Is there something else not documented anywhere that needs to be set? Or should I roll back my OS to Win 7 32 bit or Vista 32 bit? I really need this to be working as I run a business out of my house.
I am using the 64bit connector.
Thank you to anybody who has helpful knowledge about this.

I figured this out.
Maybe I should have known this, but I never saw it documented anywhere. But apparently you can't have the same computer name but with a different operating system. My old computer still had saved backups, thus it appeared in the computer list with Vista Ultimate with it's computer name. My new computer had the exact same name but was listed with Win 7 Pro. I guess that's a no no.
Once I changed the name of my new Win 7 Pro computer, I was then able to remote access successfully.
Moral of the story: if you change your operating system, change your computer name. Or remove your old backups saved under your original computer name.
