i use dvdfab decrypter free edition to first decrypt either the dvd or bluray. then i use avs video converter to encode. avs is not cheap but you can find it usually for around $60.00usd for a lifetime licence (normally $160.00). it is very powerful encoding software and once you get that licence you can download all their other software for free, for life (on the licenced computer). within avs video converter you can either convert by format or device. you can create custom encodes at any resolution along with ac3 5.1. it also includes advanced codecs which i have found gives a great looking final product with a relatively small file size (under 3gb).

I just got my first media server and love it so far. I backed up all of my I-tunes to it and love being able to access my music throughout my home using a couple PS3s and our Mac Computers. The only issue I am having (other than my album art not showing up) is ripping my DVDs. I have a large collection that I want to be able to access just like my music. I would love to have all the metadata and cover art to accompany the movies. I started letting the 490 convert the movie but it was so VERY, VERY slow.
I downloaded the latest version of Handbrake and have tried a couple combinations to be able to stream from my media-server to my PS3. I successfully decoded the DVD and then went to use Handbrake to convert. The first format: MP4 and Codec H.264, I couldn't even find it on my PS3. The second was: MP4 and Codec MPEG 4, I was able to find it on my PS3 and watch the film, but the quality was very poor.
I have been searching all night, but just couldn't seem to find an answer, though I am sure that it is here. It all sounds pretty technical for a noob like me.
Is anyone running a similar setup? (Mac, HP 490, PS3)
Should I use something other than the included software?
How do I get a HQ copy of my DVDs on my network?
Thanks in advance....from all the reading I have been doing, I know I am good company.
Best bet is not to rip or decode on the HP490. The processor is too slow, not enough memory, and the small system partition will cause problems if the swap file exceeds the available space.
Thanks for the input. I may have found the issue. I was letting the HP do the converting at the full HD rate, which from reading here has too high of a bit rate for my PS3. I was, however, able to view the movie via my other Mac. A small success. I am at work now, but before I left I reconfigure the 490 to convert at lower full rate. Fingers crossed! Once I get this figured out, I will try some other methods to decode and convert my DVDs as the 490 with its single core processor is mighty slow. I just need to find a good program that is Mac compatible. I will look into the AVS....sounds pretty sweet, I will keep you up dated.
I am curious to see if all the metadata will show up on my PS3 for the DVD. I really want to browse the cover art and have all the ratings and summary etc. for all the movies. Thanks again!
I use HandBrake on my Mac Pro to rip movies to my EX485 and Synology DS410 for viewing on Xbox 360 and PS3. Download the latest nightly build and use the High Preset, x.264. The new version will name them with the extension of M4V instead of MP4. You can rename your x.264 MP4s to M4V, as they are exactly the same.

MacPro Dual Quad Xeon 2.8GHz, 6GB RAM, 320GB (Win7 x64) + 640GB (OSX 10.6), 2x1TB
Zotac IONITX-A-U Atom 330, Win7 x64, 4GB RAM, 320GB WD Scorpio, 2TB WD GP
Synology DS410, 4x2TB WD GP RAID5
Well, after a full day of letting the 490 convert this movie, it still doesn't show up on my PS3. All of my movies that were on my Itunes and not DRM show up and are playable on my PS3, though the quality is very poor.
Dave 49er: I may need to get a NAS, but I would rather not....I just dropped $500.00 on the 490. There has got to be a way to rip DVD with my MBP or my IMac to the 490 and then use my PS3s to access them.
Maybe I was using too high a bit rate on handbrake......frustrating....kind of takes the fun out it.....
The quest continues....
The quest continues........
Okay...I am successfully viewing my movies on my PS3!! I was using too high a bit rate for the PS3 and trying to do 100% quality which is WAY too big. The resulting files were like 9GB...... After a little research, it seems that 62% is near (or better than) DVD quality.
Now my next step is figuring out how which software to use. I installed PS3MS, but not sure if I like it yet. It has some cool features, like Youtube and IMDB support, they just don't work for me yet. I am sure it has something to do with how the PS3 gets online through the 490 and the security settings.
The WMS seems pretty user friendly, just not that sexy.
Twonky is giving me error messages....DLNA server issues...bummer
Thanks again for the input!

That's really what I was saying. I use the HandBrake nightly (not 0.94 or whatever the stable version is). I rip the files using the High Preset, but the Normal Preset also works. Don't mess with any other settings. I stream the resulting files (some with my MediaSmart Server EX485 and some with my Synology NAS) to a PS3, WD TV Live +, and 2 Xbox 360s.

I have been doing something similar as well. Using Handbrake to create MP4 files and moving them to my MediaSmart Server. I have no problems playing streaming these files and playing them on my PS3. If you do a search for PS3 on the Handbrake forum, there is a thread which highlights some optimal Handbrake settings for the PS3. I have made a new "PS3" Profile in Handbrake with these settings and the I have been very pleased with the results so far.
Eboyce79: You also said that you were looking something to edit the metadata for the MP4 files. I just found this program called "Meta X" which will allow you to edit the metadata for MP4 files. I downloaded version 2.8 today (it's also free) and was able to Movie Poster images to my MP4 files. I can now see the images on my PS3 via the TwonkyMedia Server.

WoodenWords said: Okay guys, now that you have the handbrake working--how do you get the movie posters to show up? I use handbrake to rip my dvds, then put them into itunes to play on my hdtv, ipod touches and ipad...want the cover art that I steal from amazon.com..... any ideas???? ps--I am MAC person--no pc solutions, please...I recommend MetaX. It comes in both PC and Mac, in fact, I think it was originally written for the Mac. If you Google it, it should take you to the Mac download. It works great and it's freeware!
Hi,
I have OVER 2700 movies in my movie collection & OVER 300 pages worth of Music files. What I do not understand is WHY ANYONE would want to waste the time to convert ANY movie (or music) when MOST are available on-line from places like PirateBay or TorrentDay (AND are already converted). I mean granted there are SOME movies that MIGHT NOT be out there & those you MIGHT want to convert - but they are probally far and few between.
As far as converters go - check out TorrentDay. They have some GOOD ONES there and they won't cost you a dime...
Good luck...
Joe...
Joe,
I've noticed from your posts you seem non-opposed to piracy or using software that isnt legal. I believe why people would want to Rip their own music and DVDs would be because they can control the outcome of the rip and if they own the dvd or cd disc they can have a legal copy of it for their archives. Now for you to coem on and say to download movies thru torrents is just crazy... most of the torrents these days are full of viruses and other exploits and I wouldnt recommend Anyone downloading movies through torrents for their collection. Why, because they come in all different file sizes and quality and again the data may have been compromised. If you do your own rips, it more secure and you can control the quality of the rip.
I dont use hand brake, I use WinX DVD Ripper - http://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-ripper-platinum/registered-update.htm
[a couple of Joe's posts seem to promote piracy and the use of it, I don't think thats the right advice to give on these forums and you [Joe] should re-think what you post before you do so and keep your help on the Legal side. ]

Amen swpnclr!
To recommend downloading files is ludicrous! I have been slowly ripping and encoding my own collection for a while now and my mac runs 24 hours/day handling my work in the background. I do everything on a Core 2 Duo with only 4gb ram and have never had any real issues with MAC THE RIPPER, HANDBRAKE OR META-X.
My file size is only around 1.27gb and I can run this on a PS3, Apple TV, iPhone, ipod, iPad or computer of course. The quality is awesome! I believe better than DVD somehow. It plays great on our large screen Sony LCD anyway.
Since I worked hard to find the optimum settings in Handbrake, my file size is small enough to carry with my in an iPod, iPhone or iPad ! I don't have to end up encoding 2 different files!
