I have a 250gb external drive that has over 150gb of software on it.  I have been using this to save and then install software on my various home machines.  I thought I could simply plug it in to my Home Sever and move files from it to a shared drive.  However WHS only allows you to restore files from backups it has made on that server.  I guess I'm going to have to connect the drive to one my machines and move the content to WHS that way but with 100mb ethernet connections I'm currently limited to, that will take hours.

It would be nice to be able move files directly to and from an external drive.

It will also let you add the drive to the pool.

I thought you had no control over how a disk added to the pool is used. And in particular it wants to clean format any disk added.

Yes it will format any drive added to the pool.

WHat I would do is to plug the drive directly into a USB port,
Then goto Remote desktop, My Computer and copy & paste the files from there.
That will be as fast as it will ever be.

The after you finish you add the hard drive to the pool via the console if you wish and it won't matter that it formats as you will already have off-loaded your data

Actually I thought the same thing but I was loath to do so since WHS splashes up a big scrren in rdp mode that says "You can really screw things up by using this".

Even though I have 20+ years in IT, I'm loath to go off the recommended path because I've ended up in fritterware land once too often.

You'll be fine, sounds like your more qualified than me, but i do a fair bit inside RDC including installing Itunes and Goodsync etc and it all seems fine.
I think Server OS is a bit more robust than windows used to be!

just remember to use the "safely eject hardware" before you just unplug the hard drive.
