my mediasmart server was fine until about a month ago. Now it will only backup my computer until 55% then just stay there, it can be left to work and think for up to 48 hours and still does not get past 55% backed up.

I am getting very nervous without a backup in a month and need to fix this. I have tried checking for updates etc and nothing has helped.

I have the EX475 purchased august 2008.

Have you tried rebooting or getting rid of old backups? Reinstalling the connector software? Did you change or install anything right before the issue started?

I got rid of old backups and also rebooted.

I did not try reinstalling the connetor software since it is connecting fine and gets to 55%. Will try that though.

Nothing was changed, installed, or uninstalled around when it began to happen.

Try running chkdsk /f /r from a command prompt on your computer's drive(s)....

"everything will be ok in the end. if it's not ok, it's not the end" - unknown

nothing has worked... i "debugged" and got it to 58% backed up but then it just stayed there, even left it overnight and nothing past 58%. It kinda froze too, i had to do a hard restart on my computer eventually.

install the toolkit and look at the server event logs, the hoome server logs in particular. There should be something in there about the failure...post it up here

what toolkit? i looked for a toolkit to download and could not find anything.

i also looked for logs and could see when the error occured but nothing with codes or details.

I have a similar problem after using the new EX485 for about 2 months. Had to do a server factory reset to fix it after trying out all the other options without success. Spent many hours with tech support.

After about another couple of months, the same thing happened again. I should also mention that while the backup was stopped at a certain percent, the whole server was completley locked up in all instances. Cold booting was the only thing to bring the server up again. But after a while, the lock-up got progressively worse, and I had to cold boot more and more until it became a hit-and-miss to bring it up.

I was not going to do the factory reset again since there was no guarrantee the same problem would not come back again. Finally talked to a tech support person who determined that the HD was bad. Luckily, the server was still under warranty and I got a free replacement disk. I ended up puting in a new 2-TB HD as the primary disk instead of the 750 GB one while I had the opportunity. It has been running fine for over a month now.

did you by chance hook up an external hard drive that is FAT32. WHS only backs up NFTS.

Anything attached to the PC could cause this, too. USB thumb drives are usually FAT32. If you don't have a USB thumb drive, digital camera, printer that accepts camera memory cards, or even a memory card reader then I would do a chk dsk to that PCs hard drive.

Disabling the PC's wireless connection (if thats whats being used) and running it hard wired to router sometimes helps.

Try doing a server recovery as this just rebuilds the O/S and doesn't touch your data (most of the time)

...or...

If you have a spare sata HDD laying around you can take your existing HDDs out of the server, do a factory reset to it and do a backup. If that fixed it the problem is a bad HDD in the server.

Before doing the factory reset, I did back up my data to an external USB drive using file copy just for the added insurance. I did not use any external drive for regular backup use other than for the occasional data transfer. I had 2 drives in the server and had the shared folders duplication on. So I was told the second data drive should have all my data duplicated there.

Backing up using the USB drive was a slow process using file copy. It took about 10 hours for mine (about 700 GB).

I agree for the large data transfer such as the backup in this case, one can get much faster and more reliable result using the hardwire to the router rather than using the wireless.
