THis just started recently. I have 3 home computers. The ICON for the HP Home server turns gray after 2 or 3 days. If I reboot the server, it reconnects to the home netwprk for a coouple of days. Then another reboot is necessary. Any ideas on correcting this problem?

Thanks

Mike

Sorry to hear that Mike, but it sounds like there are several of us here and on other forums that are having the same issue. We have tried many different things and cannot get it to stop. It was the same for me. The sever ran great for awhile and now it locks up every few days. One guy even got a new box from HP and the same thing happened.

Hi: I'll give HP a call tomorrow and appreciate your reply. Have you contacted HP's tech support on this issue? If so, were they of any help?
Regards
Mike

Mine has been doing the same thing recently. The icon will show gray and can not access the server without doing a hard reset.

You guys might try assigning a static/reserved IP to the server in your router. I was having connectivity problems and the static IP did the trick for me.

Thanks for the suggestion DarqMan. I tried a static IP address awhile ago and it has not helped in my situation.

I was having the same problem. Traced it back to the router. I believe the router was overheating and dropping the connection to the server. I upgraded the router and haven't had the problem since. Old router was Linksys WRT310N, new is a Linksys WRT610N.

I just swapped out my router and did a full reset to the router for all settings. My server locked up last night again.

It could be a flakey system drive. If you have an extra drive around, you could try replacing the system drive and doing a factory reset.

This has been happening to me too. First with a HP LX195 and then with an Acer H340 Easystore. Very Frustrating. I had to recover the LX195 a few times and now it won't even recover. The Acer was brand new so I RMA'd it and am waiting for a replacement.

I'm thinking flakey ethernet ports on these things, which would be very bad. The last time this happened, I unplugged the ethernet cable from the router and went straight from the server to a laptop and still couldn't ping it. I tried both straight and crossover ethernet cables.

Was starting to suspect my router as well, but everything else on the network is working fine. One PC using wired and 4 other machines using wireless.

I'll try a static ip on the server when the Acer comes back and if it happens again I might also try swapping the wired ports that the server is using with the ones that the PC is using.

Hopefully we can get this figured out, or else it's bye-bye WHS and hello Drobo.

I had the same problem. Traced it back to my clock not being set to the right time. My computer had a dead battery (for the clock) and every time I shut down the computer, My system would lose the time and the server icon would stay gray.

I may try to get my LX195 to work again while I'm waiting for the replacement Acer. Last time I tried to get it working, it was failing the recovery process. Is it worthwhile to replace the hard drive and then try to run recovery again? I don't suppose I can connect USB monitor, keyboard/mouse to it?

I am having the same issue, Just started over the last few weeks.
Was there a software upgrade recently ?

I hope that this issue gets solved. I am having the same issue with the server dropping off the network. I have to do a hard boot on the server to get it back on line. I know that is not a good practice but the only option to recover the lame server. I have done a factory recovery 3 times with no favorable results. All suggestions would be most welcome.

Well my solution came by accident. I noticed that mine was dropping off line every 3 days or so. On those days I was getting a red indicator telling me that my server is not protected, McAfee is not up to date, or something to that effect. Once I went in and checked the box to not pay any attention to this notification mine began working correctly. It;s been a couple oof months and my Home Server is now staying on line. In my opinion the McAfee software cause more trouble than it is worth. Does HP know what the problem is? I think so.

Thanks for the reply Mike. I think (hope) I might have found the problem. I have Avast running on my server and I picked up a bug. Avast found it and I was not informed of this immediately. Avast had quarantined the file. I did not acknowledge this and every time it gave me the notice it locked up the server waiting for my acknowledgement. I have dealt with the file and ever since (2 days now) the server has kept its network connection and I am bug free. I will post back if it fails.

I had a number of problems but they probably were all related to losing connections.

I have an EX495, 2 HP Desktops running Win 7 Ultimate and a Toshiba laptop running Win 7 Ultimate. All are connected to a Netgear GS108T which is connected to a Time Machine router for Internet access. So, except for the laptop, everything is running on Gigabit Ethernet.

I fiddled with the Ethernet device settings to optimize my network performance. Seemed to work OK at first but then I started experiencing connection losses and backup failures on everything except my laptop.

Connections could be restored simply by unplugging and replugging my Ethernet cable into the MSS.

A couple of days ago, I set all of systems (including the WHS) to the same settings as my laptop which were probably the same as the original defaults. Everything has been work well since so probably everything would have been just fine all along were it not for my "improvements."

I'll probably fiddle some more and it may give me a better handle on what doesn't work as well as what works but won't post my settings as your setup probably isn't the same as mine. But if you are having connection loss problems, you might want to compare your Ethernet device properties on all your machines.
