No help here as I'm brand new myself and trying to do the same thing. I've found programs like orb that set up on the wii to store, but can't get the software installed on the HP mediasmart server, yet...
Categories: Setup and Installation
Hey guys, I'm currently deployed and I purchased a EX485 on Amazon last night. I also purchased 3 Seagate 1.5 TB Hard Drives (the server came with a 750GB). I'm going to list my equipment and then what I want, please let me know what I need if I'm missing anything or if I should upgrade anything.
Equipment:
1 HP Mediasmart Server w/ 3 1.5TB HD and 1 750GB HD.
1 PS3
1 XBox 360
1 Wii
1 Sony 55" LCD TV
1 Western Digital Media Player (HD TV Live)
1 Laptop (Windows)
What I want:
The ability to rip my DVD's and store them on my Server and be able to watch movies on my tv. Listen to music/watch music videos, etc. I read somewhere about some nice software for the PS3 and XBox to have on the Server, so whatever is the best, please recommend. Also, I need a good switch that can handle this data. Thanks for all the help you guys can give me.
I'd say your list looks fine. The only thing I see missing is software to decrypt DVDs. The Video converter on the 485 can convert to high-bitrate MP4, but you need something to decrypt the disc first.
The server includes Twonky and Windows Media Connect. It will stream to the XBOX, PS3, WDTV, etc just fine.
I assume you already have a router, so if you want a nice gigabit switch, I have 2 D-Link Green Gigabit DGS2208 switches and one Netgear GS605 Gigabit switch. Both have been great; I'd recommend either.
Matt,
"The server includes Twonky and Windows Media Connect. It will stream to the XBOX, PS3, WDTV, etc just fine."
What are differences between Twonky and Windows Media Connect? Any advantage using one or the other?
thanks,
Harty01
The main advantage of using Twonky is that it supports more file types then WMC (or it did before the last update to WMC but I think it still does).

I find them to be fairly similar for the basics, though Twonky handles XVID and DIVX with 5.1 Audio.
To Harty01,
Try one, and if it doesn't like your filetype or has issues, try the other. It's nice having both. :-)
