I've experienced similar symptoms. The Home Server Connector is grayed out, the server does not respond to the soft power off so the only option is to force shutdown. What I have found is that my system consistently locks up between 12:15 & 12:25AM - look for Error messages in the Application log like "the previous shutdown at 12:22 was unexpected." I've done several factory resets and HP has even swapped out the chassis but the lockups persist.
Regarding the CPU temp, you can find this info on the HP MSS Hardware tab under Settings. My EX485 with 1 2TB drive is running at 56 deg C now.

HI, every couple of days I find myself rebooting the MediaSmart. I go to access my mapped drives to my media and files under my computer and it cannot access them. I try to RDC in but cannot connect. I reboot it and it is fine. There is nothing in event viewer that gives me an indication of what is wrong, so I am lost. I did upgrade the CPU recently, but that should not be the issue. The server is on my desk in open air flow. I do NOT know how to check CPU temps- maybe it is the CPU. Any suggestions. Thanks!
Wow. So nothing has resolved your issue either? Now that I think about it, I did switch out my router as my previous Linksys died on me. I went from a WRT310N down to a WRT300N. When it was hooked to the WRT310N, I dont recall having to do this. The IP of the server is static, I did go to MSCONFIG and shut down a few unnecessary softwares that started up with the server. Also the CPU temp is 32 degrees C for mine, which is alot cooler and I have 4 1 TB HDDs and 2GB mem in it. I have running MediaMalls Playon running and Avira AntiVir. I wonder if it has to do with the router. DHCP release every 24hours and I do recall excluding the IP from DHCP in the old router and not this one. I will check that out.
The servers IP is excluded in the router, however I did disable mac address clone which was always disabled in the WRT310N. I'll post in a few days and follow up
It Locked up again today. It seems like it is every two days that this happens.I see no firmware updates or any type of update on HPs servers.
I'm having similar issues but I can't even get 2 or 3 days out of my HP box, I usually only get a few hours. So far a month of troubleshooting with HP has not helped, I've even had my chassis swapped out and it still happens.
I've found bad sectors on some hard drives which seem to be causing the server to freeze when it does its daily ChkDsk after Midnight. Shut the server down and put one of the hard drives into a workstation (I suppose an external enclosure would work too) and either run ChkDsk /f /r (double check those switches before proceeding). If you're not familiar with the Command Prompt, download Data Lifeguard Tools from Western Digital (works regardless of your drive manufacturer) and run the Extended Test. It will give you the option to attempt Repair on the bad sectors but you may loose the data in those blocks if you don't have a good backup.
All my hardware tested good- HDD included. I read a long forum, exactly like mine. After 2 months HP replaced his power supply and it fixed his issue. So I am going to contact HP and have them just send me a new one. If diags test out good and my router is good - power is the last resort.
Hope it works for you and let us know if you have any luck. Mine is also locking up every few days and I have tried a bunch of swaps with no luck. Just reset my router to original configuration to see if that helps. What really kills me is this server ran great for about 3 months and just started locking up like this for no reason.
Hey Guys
I am having the exact same problems you guys are but my server is only accessible for about 10 minutes after booting, then the connection just dies if I reboot it works fine again for another 10 min or so, I just got a new Chassis from HP due to an over heating problem, thought that might have something to do with it still doesnt work.
I have reinstalled 3 times now still no luck. checked all of the settings on the router, nothing changed on the network. disabled all fire walls, removed Mcafee anti virus, downloaded all updates from H.P. and microsoft, reinstalled connector software several times, restarted router after server lost connection, Restarted entire network several times. The entire network is up and running all the time the HP server is the only thing that is loosing connection I have full access to all other computers at all times.
I'm pulling my hair out... this has been going on for over a month HP support is not much help they keep telling me its not the server it must be something in my network. but the rest of my network is fine !!!
gonna try a new hard drive see if I can transfer old data over after installing a new HDD and fresh OS if anybody has any other ideas I would be happy to hear them!!!
thanks everybody
Did HP send you a new power supply? If not I am going to try that. I read a forum the other day that said their once he replaced the power supply issues went away. I just havent had the time to deal with HP. That is my last hope- I love this server it just isnt reliable, I would hate to get another one.
I have a hipro power supply 200 watt oem for EX470 or EX475 it works great, i will sell it for 60.00 plus shipping i live in las vegas NV and we can use paypal so its safe for both of us, let me know
at welchwerks @ cox.net
its on ebay right now and ends soon, i did upgrade the fan to a quiter one, works great

this is the factory power supply for EX470 and EX475
I'm also experiencing exact same issue as you guys. My server would become inaccessible every 1-3 days and require reboot. All services such as file sharing, bittorent and media streaming would be dead. Without video output it's very hard to diagnose what's going on. Logs show no software failure, LED lights looks normal, the only thing I can do is ping it. And hard reboot solves the issue. Sometimes the reboot is very fast, other times it takes a very long time.
I've already upgrade my ex485's CPU to the latest Celeron E3300. The power supply theory sounds plausible. I've had self-built desktops with problem that I couldn't diagnose end up fixed by changing power supply.
I found a wiki page on how to change power supply yourself. http://www.mediasmartserver.net/wiki/index.php/Replacing_the_Power_Supply
Has anyone tried a new power supply yet? HP said my warranty expired in June when I just but my server in septemeber this year. I wouldnt mind buying one but they are very expensive. This issue is driving me nuts and HP is no help. Would it be possible that the server is hosting DNS and it is conflicting with the router?
my 470 was shutting down after 10 to 15 min, when i replaced the power supply all better
Before swapping my hard drive HP sent me a whole new Chassis, which includes the power supply. This did not fix my issues.
Only after swapping the hard drive did my issue go away. FWIW my hard drive tested out good too. HP said it was not the first time they had a 'bad hard drive' that did not show bad with any tests.
I have put in all new hard drives and now this issue is happening every 24 hours or less. I need to order the power supply. I will let you guys know. Thanks.
Guys, I am finally ordering the new power supply. I found one on newegg. Do not be fooled by those ebay prices, which are double what I paid. It is a flex atx power supply, I have done research and what I bought is the same dimensions as what they are selling on ebay for 100 dollars. Also mine is a 300 watt unit. Check it out. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817338042&cm_re=flex_at...
Hopefully yours isnt out of warranty like mine, even though mine should be in warranty, HP screwed up, but I need this back up and running as it is replacing my cable soon. I will let you all know how it works out. Happy Holidays.
i read this on newegg, might want to order a new fan for it
Cons: VERY noisy under casual 3d gaming or high cpu load like video encoding. If your upgrading the psu in your small form factor home theater PC because you want to run a nice graphics card or faster processor this will do it but expect ALOT of noise. The fan in this powersupply sounds like a cordless vacuum once you put a load on it. The fan is also unbalanced and creates excessive vibration causing the chassis to vibrate creating even more noise as it did in mine.
I am having the same problem as everyone else. I shutdown my server today until I here otherwise. It's beating up my network by sending 100's and 100's of million in packets to all the machines.
I think I may have stumbled upon something that is going to help. I am not very adept on the networking protocols, but this could be useful.

It in short says not to use DHCP on the server. I have mine set to use this now, but I probably should manually configure. I noticed all my crashes are linked to a System event called WinHttpAutoProxySvc. I don't think this should even be happening and I will turn this off once I know more. This group has found the event to be linked to confusing the NIC cards in some servers. I hope the more educated of you can tell me if this makes sense.
@Titleistman I have my DHCP disabled on the mediasmart server so I'm pretty sure I have a different issue. Plus you really should have the server on a static ip either through DHCP reservation on the router or manually set the ip in the first place anyways, how else are you going to do proper port forwarding?
I purchased new hard-drive that will arrive today, I'll try to change my system drive. I read the Seagate drive that came with the server is known to be problematic.
I do have a static IP reserved through the router. I just didn't know if I needed to set the WHS to static on its configuration. I am still going to shutdown this WinHttpAutoProxySvc. I just wish I knew if I really needed it or not.
I look forward to hearing about your hard drive. I have a problem as well with the trial verison of Avast WHS Edition, but I will make this real today after I purchase the license. I also stopped WHS from waking up my computers to backup and so far so good over the past 24 hours.
The holiday kinda messed up my shipping so my hard drive wont be here sometime next week...still having the same problem 20 min of connection at a time. doing that hard boot cant be easy on the server so untill my new hard drive gets here my server is off too...
found a 1 tb on ebay for $69 bucks with free shipping. I think after christmas the 2-3 tb hdd will come down in price till then a 1tb should tell me weather or not the hard drive is the problem. I dont think it could be anything else I have already gotten a new chassis from HP, reinstalled the OS. and the connector software, thats the only thing I havent replaced... Still keeping my fingers crossed.
I like this little server I would hate to have to send it back to HP but if this doesnt fix the problem I will have to look elsewhere for my network attached storage needs...So far HP has offered little in the way of TECH support when I tell them what the problem is they just tell me its my network.
I am not exactly a newbie when it comes to computers I have a BA in computer science, my MCSE, and A+ certs. I have also worked in the tech support field for years. So I have some idea whats going on with my network. If I am struggling this bad with this small of a problem what does HP expect people with no computer training to do???
I will keep you guys posted on what happens when the new drive gets here...
I havent received my new power supply yet, but I will tell you when I keep my Mediasmart off for a day and turn it on it will run for a good couple of days before it crashes. But if I leave it running and it crashes I will give it a quick reboot and it will crash again later that day. DHCP was my first guess and it did not help the issue. I am wondering if the CPU upgrade contributed to this issue. I love my server to and I am in the same boat as alot of you guys. This sucks and I have spent so much money trying get the perfect digital home media but it just isnt working out. My next step is going to be a HTPC with RAID config and HDMI out.
