HI, every couple of days I find myself rebooting the MediaSmart. I go to access my mapped drives to my media and files under my computer and it cannot access them. I try to RDC in but cannot connect. I reboot it and it is fine. There is nothing in event viewer that gives me an indication of what is wrong, so I am lost. I did upgrade the CPU recently, but that should not be the issue. The server is on my desk in open air flow. I do NOT know how to check CPU temps- maybe it is the CPU. Any suggestions.  Thanks!

I've experienced similar symptoms. The Home Server Connector is grayed out, the server does not respond to the soft power off so the only option is to force shutdown. What I have found is that my system consistently locks up between 12:15 & 12:25AM - look for Error messages in the Application log like "the previous shutdown at 12:22 was unexpected." I've done several factory resets and HP has even swapped out the chassis but the lockups persist.

Regarding the CPU temp, you can find this info on the HP MSS Hardware tab under Settings. My EX485 with 1 2TB drive is running at 56 deg C now.

Wow. So nothing has resolved your issue either? Now that I think about it, I did switch out my router as my previous Linksys died on me. I went from a WRT310N down to a WRT300N. When it was hooked to the WRT310N, I dont recall having to do this. The IP of the server is static, I did go to MSCONFIG and shut down a few unnecessary softwares that started up with the server. Also the CPU temp is 32 degrees C for mine, which is alot cooler and I have 4 1 TB HDDs and 2GB mem in it. I have running MediaMalls Playon running and Avira AntiVir. I wonder if it has to do with the router. DHCP release every 24hours and I do recall excluding the IP from DHCP in the old router and not this one. I will check that out.

The servers IP is excluded in the router, however I did disable mac address clone which was always disabled in the WRT310N. I'll post in a few days and follow up

I'm having similar issues but I can't even get 2 or 3 days out of my HP box, I usually only get a few hours. So far a month of troubleshooting with HP has not helped, I've even had my chassis swapped out and it still happens.

I've found bad sectors on some hard drives which seem to be causing the server to freeze when it does its daily ChkDsk after Midnight. Shut the server down and put one of the hard drives into a workstation (I suppose an external enclosure would work too) and either run ChkDsk /f /r (double check those switches before proceeding). If you're not familiar with the Command Prompt, download Data Lifeguard Tools from Western Digital (works regardless of your drive manufacturer) and run the Extended Test. It will give you the option to attempt Repair on the bad sectors but you may loose the data in those blocks if you don't have a good backup.

All my hardware tested good- HDD included. I read a long forum, exactly like mine. After 2 months HP replaced his power supply and it fixed his issue. So I am going to contact HP and have them just send me a new one. If diags test out good and my router is good - power is the last resort.

Hope it works for you and let us know if you have any luck. Mine is also locking up every few days and I have tried a bunch of swaps with no luck. Just reset my router to original configuration to see if that helps. What really kills me is this server ran great for about 3 months and just started locking up like this for no reason.

Hey Guys
I am having the exact same problems you guys are but my server is only accessible for about 10 minutes after booting, then the connection just dies if I reboot it works fine again for another 10 min or so, I just got a new Chassis from HP due to an over heating problem, thought that might have something to do with it still doesnt work.

I have reinstalled 3 times now still no luck. checked all of the settings on the router, nothing changed on the network. disabled all fire walls, removed Mcafee anti virus, downloaded all updates from H.P. and microsoft, reinstalled connector software several times, restarted router after server lost connection, Restarted entire network several times. The entire network is up and running all the time the HP server is the only thing that is loosing connection I have full access to all other computers at all times.

I'm pulling my hair out... this has been going on for over a month HP support is not much help they keep telling me its not the server it must be something in my network. but the rest of my network is fine !!!

gonna try a new hard drive see if I can transfer old data over after installing a new HDD and fresh OS if anybody has any other ideas I would be happy to hear them!!!

thanks everybody
