put the old server drives into the new server then do a system retore, that should do it
Categories: Setup and Installation
My home built server died this week. It had 5 internal drives and 4 more in esata mulitiplier. I have ordered the EX490 and trying to decide the best way to move data. Was hoping for some experienced advice. I suppose i could just pull the data off the drives one at a time using my desktop and pushing it on the server. but curious if anyone has any better way. Thanks
That is what i was hoping but my drive count is a little off. i might be able to put the extra drives in usb enclosures... and what do i do with the old system drive it is actually my biggest at 1.5 ter.. and has a lot of data on it but i should be ok because of duplication
how about this for timing, out of the blue my EX470 keeps shutting down after about 15 min, it has been running perfect for over a year now, looks like i might move my drives to a custom built system, the system HAL might not like that.or find a replacement PSU, if anyone can help one or both please chime in we both are looking to keep the information on our Data Drives.
I've been able to use the server Backup/Restore capability. You'll loose your workstation backups but they'll be recreated on the new server. I use a 1TB drive in an eSATA enclosure and I can get everything on there. There are only 2 Restore options, Wipe and Replace OR Update server with missing files.

When you plug in an external drive, don't add it to the Storage Pool. Choose the option for Home Server Backups. Backup the server and then shut it down. I just realized this may be a problem for you if your server shuts down automatically after 15 mins. In that case, your only option may be to copy the data off the drives manually.
In the event you can get a good backup, then you could use that to restore on your new EX490.
So my old and dead server was fairly disorganized so i have pretty much decided to pull the files one drive at a time and transfer them to the new server. it will be a little tedious, but should allow me to clean up all the files.
