Hi All - I've got a 5 computer network with a MSS 487. One of the computers is a TouchSmart 64 bit. I had Windows 7 RC running on this smoothly. About 10 days ago, the backups started failing. It would get to 1% and then fail - it would shut the computer down as well. The shut down report is below.

I went ahead and did the full install of Win 7 - did a clean install. I also reinstalled the connector software. At this point this is the only software on this computer (besides IE!) And I am still having the backup problem. I reinstalled both the OS and the connector software - same problem. I have another computer with a full Win 7 (but it is 32 bit) in the network and it is backing up just fine. I'm stuck! Any advice out there for me? Many thanks  -jane

A piece of software (i.e. drivers) or hardware fault can cause those errors. You can use this tutorial to debug the dump file to see exactly what is causing the error:

I have more to report here - When I go into the WHS Console, and into Computers & Backup, and hit Configure Backup for this computer, I get the screen that says "Please wait while the wizard collects information about this computer". The green line goes halfway across and then just freezes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Connector software a bazillion times and it doesnt help. I have installed all the relevant Win 7 updates for the computer. It is driving me crazy! thanks

Maybe my understanding is incorrect and correct me please. I somehow thought Windows 7 is not fully supported yet until the server software version 3 is ready. I am holding back my Windows 7 upgrades on all my client pc's until the server version 3 is released. Anyone thinks differently?

I think differently. I have 2 Win7 boxes that have no troubles. I'm about to do a 3rd one. There are lots of folks who use Win7 without a problem.
I have no idea what's causing this issue. Are you backing up on a wired connection?

I am glad it works out for you.

Currently, I don't have any problem backing up, either via wired or wireless connection. I did have an ealier problem with the system drive that went bad and has to be replaced.

I only have have Vista and Win XP clients for now.

Have you tried running the chkdsk utility on the pc's drives? Open a cmd window and type:

chkdsk /f /r

When you run it on the boot drive you will need to restart the pc to have the utility run. You can also download and install the Connector troubleshooter  and run that to see if anything shows up. You can get it from your server, open a browser and go to:

http://"YOUR_SERVER_NAME_HERE":55000

Put your server's name or IP address where "YOUR_SERVER_NAME_HERE" is...

Hi everybody. the chkdsk worked beautifully. I frankly didnt think I needed to do that since I had so little installed on the computer and it was all brand-spankin new...but you never know what can go wrong, I suppose! thanks for the advice!
