I have looked for this error on the web, and have found a few others having it.  But I cannot see any statement hinting to it being false or real.

"Backplane temperature becomes too high, value = 106 degrees C."

Generated by WNAS Event ID 16

Should I ignore this error or take some kind of action?

I've had it come and go since May.

Nobody else have this? I've found out that it comes at boot, so obviously a false message...

Do you have the latest HP update installed?

Yes I do. Tried manually to look for new updates just now, and none available.

I have the same problem with mine. I swear it occurs everytime updates are pushed to the WHS, but I cannot be entirely sure. I also have noticed that it might also be occurring when a McAfee scan is underway.

That backplane sensor was taken out with the update from last year. It shouldn't even be there to cause a problem if all of the updates are installed.

Well, all you have to do to get the error logged is restart the WNAS service.

WNAS Device has been started.
Backplane temperature is warning, value = 106 degrees C.
Backplane temperature becomes too high, value = 106 degrees C.

All updates installed. Maybe a hw error? Who knows...
