I'm a new HP Media Smart owner. I bought an EX495 in preparation for the windows 7 upgrade in order to have a back up of my XP instances and a back up of the 'clean' windows 7 instance after the upgrade.

I had expected that EX495 would be Windows 7 ready since it is the newest version, but looks like I was mistaken. I gather that Microsoft is going to release a "Power Pack 3" for the home server OS that will make the server windows 7 compatible.

What is the best course for my Windows 7 upgrade...
1) Install on the weekend of October 22 as I originally planned and back up with EX495 as is with Power Pack 2.
2) Wait for Power Pack 3 to be released sometime late this year / early next year before upgrading to Windows 7 on my client machines.

I've been moving tons of files to the shared folders on the EX495 from other NAS products that have disappointed me in the past. From a link in this forum, I read that the upgrade would not preserved shared data. Is this correct? I hope I read this wrong!

Thank you in advance for you help!

What do you mean an upgrade won't preserver shared data. I would think that as long as the data is on the MSS you can do whatever you want to your pc and your data will be protected.

I have been using Windows 7 for some time. Even have an Full version now. I haven't noticed any issues with running Windows 7 at all. It even backs up.(I haven't tried a restore though)

Power Pack 3 should be out real soon. MS was originally stating it was schedule to be released about the same time as Windows 7, but I haven't found anything that hasn't worked with it though.

Mavrrick - thanks for the reply.

There is a post that had a link to this url: http://www.mediasmarthome.com/blog/entry/13048/HP-Confirms-3.0-Upgrade-for-Le...

In that post was the following comment: "We are currently proceeding down the path of a server recovery solution that will not only upgrade your software to the 3.0 version, but also preserve the data in your shared folders. This approach is preferable to a factory reset that would otherwise require customers to manually offload and restore all server files that the customer wants to preserve."

It is the last part ("manually offload and restore all sever files that the customer wants to preserver.") that has me scared/concerned.

As a new Media Smart user trying to get his arms around all of the various software involved, I'm confused if the above link is related to the Windows Power Pack 3 upgrade to the OS or an upgrade to HP's own software on the Media Smart Server. With what I'm learning over the last couple of days, it sounds like it is related to older Media Smart Servers (not the new EX495) and related to only the HP software. But I could be wrong.

It is some what comforting to know that windows 7 systems can be backed up with the currently installed Power Pack 2, but it would be more comforting to know that a windows 7 system can be restored from Power Pack 2.

Basically, I want to make sure that I'm not setting myself up for failure in the future. I don't want to discover that my windows 7 back up using Power Pack 2 is no good and that I'd have to revert back to XP and perform the upgrade a second time.

Thanks again for your post.

Well first thing is that the upgrade you are refereing to is for the HP software and not Power Pack 3. You are exactly right that it comes with your EX495 and so you don't have to worry about that.

What they are describing is the difference between a factory reset and a system recovery. In general you don't want to do a factory reset unless you are starting clean or getting rid of the MSS. It is also a standard part of the WHS operating system.

Power Pack 3 just adds some extra enhancements for Windows 7 primarly. It is schedule (no exact date, but MS has stated several times they should coincide somehwat) to be release around the same time as Windwos 7 and if i understand it correctly will load as a windows update right to the MSS as soon as it is avaliable.

If you are concerend about this I would just suggest holding of on upgradeing your pc's until PP3 is released.
