All of a sudden (after yesterdays windows patches were installed) my network health indicator shows red.  All of my PC's now show the following error:

HP Media Collector - Please Update the Client Software

The version of software on "WADE-PC" is not compatible with the server.  Please uninstall the client software and reinstall it from the server.

I have tried uninstallingthe home server software and reinstalling but get the same error.  What am I missing?

Same thing happened to me...still trying to figure it out. Tried re-installaing HP SmartMedia Client from the server software directory, but got an error when I tried to do that.

I am experiencing the same troubles, same error message in the health indicator area. So I re-ran the server update manually and rebooted the server, re-ran the client install, yet repeat of the same error. Is there some resource where we can fetch the newer version of the client software to host on our server? I installed initially from the CD that shipped with the machine.

Running ex495, brand new user (this week).
Checking in the Add/Remove Programs control panel yields the following version details.

* HP MediaSmart Server Update 3.0 Update 1, version 3.0.14.33080
* HP Update, version 4.000.011.006

I will note that running HP Update results in three items to update, and then all three fail. They are:
* HP Update, version 5.2
* Security update for HP PML driver
* Critical update for fatal error 1714

Thanks!

Yep, just now started getting this error, too, with both a Win7 and a Win XP client after the patch Tuesday on my EX490. Thing is, if it is an issue with the HP Media Collector I don't even need it on the clients.

Just when I thought my relatively new WHS environment was stable... dang.

Interesting, I just did all Windows updates on my XP machine and everything is peachy. I'll point out this thread to HP, but so far I can't confirm what you all are seeing.

I unistalled the connector software on my computers and then reinstalled from the CD and all is fine.   Not sure what happened as this should have been the same rev as what was on the system.

Just learned that HP coincidentally updated their software over the last couple of days and because of this update the WHS connector on each client must be uninstalled and reinstalled.

After reinstalling the connectors AND restarting my EX490 the "incompatible" errors cleared.

As a new owner of an HP495, this forum was a great help for this issue.
- Not sure if my server was updated recently (I have auto updates on, but can not find any logs that it was updated). Server version 3.0.14.33083 - 8/11/2009
- The client version of HP Media Smart Server 3.0 was 3.0.6.3175 before client reinstall from server.
- The client version of Windows Home Server Connector was 6.0.2030.2 both before and after client reinstall from server.
- Ran the WHSConnectorInstall.exe program from location "\\Hp-server\Software\Home Server Connector Software\" This program uninstalled and reinstalled the client software.
- After the upgrade, the HP software now listed as HP Media Smart Server 3.0 Update 1, version 3.0.14.33080 (now similar to the server version number)
- There was some intermittent bugs with the console. Was not updating the system status page. After rebooting both client and server a few times, this problem went away.

I have a 485 but installed the powerpack 3.0 beta last week because I had understood it had better support for Windows 7 and I just built a new media center PC using Windows 7. I have not seen any errors to date. Am I confused? Is the powerpack 3.0 the same thing as the 3.0 software spoken of here? I read the review of the new 495 and it seems to contain a number of upgrades and fixes, especially to the media collector which does not work reliably on my 485 (I almost lost some very important pictures because I relied on the media collector.) Anyway, me question is: when can we get the new software for the 48x series machines?

Power Pack 3 is an OS update from Microsoft that will add in some new stuff and offer better Win 7 support. That's completely separate from HPs own 3.0 update (coincidental that they're the same "3" number). Information on the MSS 3.0 upgrade for current EX owners has been posted here: http://www.mediasmarthome.com/blog/entry/13048/HP-Confirms-3.0-Upgrade-for-Le...

I have the same issue as OP on a brand new EX495; just booted it yesterday. Client is W7 x64 RTM. I wasn't sure whether my error message was due to running two WHS on the same network but apparently not because I got the same error with my other server off.

I installed PP3 and it said it was updating the connector software. I might try reinstalling the connector software from the server.

If anyone else hears anything, I'm all ears.

FYI all, this resolved my own issue, thanks v35_pilot!

This is so frustrating with a brand new server. I spent over an hour on the phone with HP tech support uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling, rebooting and still the same result. Using the search function with "HP Media Collector - Please update the client software" from the help icon on the console window produced "no topics found". I tried the HP support chat function but the website said EX495 MediaSmart Server is not a known HP product. I can't seem to find any place on the HP support web site where I can email a problem, so it looks like another long wait on hold with HP support or this forum are my only alternatives. HELP!!! guys and gals. BYW - That Network Crirical message went away for a few hours and then came back - go figure.

I am having the same exact problem!! I just bought the EX490 and everything works fine except the media collector. I hope someone can figure this out!

i had the same issue with my EX490. I ran the 'WHSConnectorInstall.exe' which can be found on the server in the following directory (e.g. \\HOMESERVER\Software\Home Server Connector Software). Removing the previous version is not necessary as the new version will remove the old one. Once the installation is complete...reboot both your server AND your computer.

HTH.

Thank you, Harty01!! That did the trick! It would help if HP had this information on their website.

Thanks again!

My new ex490 (22 dec)with 2 discs does not collect my photos. It did it once.
Have tried to reinstall the collector. tried to do server recovery. It is getting worse and worse. By now I cannot even se what the normal backup contains.
Wonder if I can format both drives an make a new installation - had from beginning some problems with the certificates when I tried remote acces to the server.

what is the best to do?

I just set up my EX490 today and I had this issue. I've reinstalled the software in the PC and now I just rebooted the EX490 so hopefully that will get rid of it. Now I just need to install the E6300 CPU and 4GB of memory later this week.

22TB MSS EX490(upgraded CPU-E6300(2.8Ghz dual core Pentium)),
4GB memory, MediaSonic 4 Bay eSATA, 2x MediaSonic 4 Bay USB

I just purchased a EX485 and have set it up. It has been running great for about four days and I have noticed that the Media Collector has fetched the Music and photos from one of my PCs but not the other two. The one that it did collect from is a Vista computer the other two are a XP and a Win7 machine. Any ideas? I have all three setup to collect items in the HP Media Collector. Thanks for any help.

One place you could look on the two clients that aren't being "collected" is in Services.  Run services.msc and browse down to MediaCollectorService and see whether Startup Type is set to Manual or Automatic and whether the Status is "Started."  If they are set to Manual or Disabled, you could try setting them to Automatic and start the service.

I did as you said and on the XP machine the Startup Type was set to Auto and the Status is Started. But on the WIN7 machine the MediaCollectorService is not to be found. Thanks for the info, any additional thoughts?
