this has to be done manually. There is no option to automatically backup the server to my knowledge
Categories: Backup and Restore
I purchased an LX195 MediaSmart Server, and have 4 PC's connected to it. Each of the PC's is backed up every night, using the settings of the "Automatic Backup Management" tab in "Settings".
I also have a 2 TB backup drive attached to the server as a "Server Backup Hard Drive". I ran a backup of the SERVER once about a week ago, but it is not backed up onto the Server backup drive every night like the connected computers are. Under the "Computers and Backup" tab, when I click on each of the attached computers, the "Configure Backup" option is active, and I can configure those backups. However, when I click on the HomeServer (which shows up in the list), the "Configure Backup" option grays out, and becomes inactive. So . . . can I schedule SERVER backups, or do I need to do this manually.
Sure would be nice to set the backups up and not have to worry about it.
Fendrix79, Thanks for the info. Does anyone know if there is an add-in that could schedule server backups?
If you have an external drive or server share you can use the BDBB Add-In, but must start it manually. There is another way to include the backups in the duplication but it is not sanctioned by Microsoft. It involves a small registry hack, but you should not attempt it unless you are cumfortable editing the system registry.
There is a documented approach using Robocopy to backup the Backup Database and Server Shares to an external USB or eSata drive on a schedule using task manager. You'll need to google for the exact procedures, but I know people have had success with it.
I believe others have used either SyncToy or SecondCopy to backup their server.
