Check the setting under Tools/Option/Performance for buffering. It should be set to "Use default buffering".

Hello,
I've only had my server for a couple of months now so I am still fairly new to this.
I have an EX485 where I have several home videos stored.
I use WMP 11 on my computer (not the server) with XP.
I've been playing the videos stored on my server by going into the videos folder and double clicking the video I want to watch. This works well with one exception... It takes a good minute before I am able to change the volume and/or fast-forward/rewind the video. The video playback is fine, it's just my ability to the controls takes a while to "load".
Any ideas, suggestions or solutions?
TIA

Checked it... it was already set set to Use Default Buffering, as you suggested. Any other ideas?

It may actually be the type of video file. Are they the files from the HP Video Encoder, or stuff you got elsewhere? If elsewhere, can you give us details about how these videos are encoded (format, bitrate, etc)?
Is it all files you play, or only certain ones?

I have the same problem, every video I have tried does this, if I use VLC Player it works without issue. If the file is local on my computer I have no issue either.
Windows Vista 64 SP2 and Windows Home Server Power Pack 2, my home server is custom built by me.

I'd say your problem, at least in this case, is the M-JPEG format. Depending on how the file was written, you may not be able to seek the file until it's been completely loaded.
Given that MJPEG is highly inefficient anyway, you should think about converting these to a format that's streaming friendly. Movie Maker should be able to convert this to WMV9, which will work fine, or you can use something like the free Any Video Converter.
Will converting the video cause a loss of quality?

Scormodo - Does your issue only happen when playing from the server? Have you tried copying the file to your desktop and playing it from there. I have same problem as you I think, haven't figured it out yet.
Scormodo said: Will converting the video cause a loss of quality? That entirely depends on what codec you use to convert it and what bitrate. If you use Movie Maker, select a high quality conversion setting and I doubt you'll notice any difference. You don't have to overwrite your original files by the way. You can always archive them if your concerned about it, but having the other verison will be nice for streaming.

Yes, this only happens when playing a video file from the server. This behavior does not happen when I play video files from my desktop.
What are the details of the video files that you are playing? You can use a program like MediaInfo (http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en) to get the specific details of your file. (See my post above).

I will have to try and get that info but I know they are .avi encoded with XVid, one thing to note, I am now using Windows Media Player 12 and everything works great. WMP 12 comes default with Windows 7.
