I've had tremendous problems with my EX470 and McAfee (not being able to get rid of it off the WHS after paying for new subscription - I've spent days on this without success, but that isn't my current, immediate problem). I think McAfee finally did me in. I read somewhere about connectivity issues on WHS using IE 8 and McAfee.(I inherited the trial version of McAfee last year with the HP update that included other things; I paid for the new license this March 2009, but was never able to get it installed. I switched to Avast and spent days and days and hours and hours with McAfee technical support over 4 months to try and get their product totally off the WHS - never successfully)Just prior to leaving for holiday 2 weeks ago I lost the ability to have my Mediasmart connect on my network. Continuous flashing Blue light, but couldn't connect. Upon return this weekend - the situation hasn't changed, so I decided to (for the first time, ever) try the Recovery utility using the disc that came with the EX470. I hoped that a clean install would get rid of McAfee and hopefully the connectivity problems. The Recovery process starts fine, but interupts part way through when the WHS powers off. This has happened twice at the point of WHS updating/rebooting (which is about 66% of the way through the mandatory Updating process) but the WHS never does power back on again. This is about 1 hour and 40 minutes into the Recovery process. It has happened 3 times now (initiated on a Vista 32 bit business machine) - now I am trying it again starting with an XP machine. My EX470 is set up as follows: processor upgraded to  2.6GHz AMD LE-1640 Orleans and RAM replaced to 2 GB; In addition to the 500 GB drive I added 1 x 750 GB and 2 x 1 TB. It was running automatic updates both in Windows and in HP and was current (I think that this is how I got IE 8). The only addins were AVAST and MSS Fan Control. The capacity was at about 50%. The only files on the WHS about which I really care were Shared/Users - a documents file which contains about 60 GB; Music of about 100 GB and Photos of around 200 GB (all of these were duplicated). So my situation now is that I'm partially through a Recovery and can't access anything, at all.Is there any other way to access these files on the Mediasmart? If I try to remote desktop or go in through Network Places - the EX470 powers off immediately (even although it will repeatedly stay on for 1 1/2 to 2 hours of the Recovery process). Can I buy a new 485 and put the 3 extra drives from the 470 into it and put it into recovery in an attempt to recover these files? The biggest issue is that I was using the WHS as a server from my desktop and have my Documents residing there, only. If/when I get recovery I sure am going to start using offline folders and synchronization. Are there other solutions? Thanks for any help and all suggestions.

As long as your have only tried a recovery and not a reset, your files should still be there. You could take a drive, hook it up to a desktop that can read an NTFS formatted drive either internally or via a external USB enclosure and get at your files that way.

Sorry to heat about your problem. It sucks when things do go as they are supposed to.

As far as a backup solution, there is an add-in available that will allow you to back-up all of your computer backups to an external drive. Do a search for WHSBDBB on the site and you will find many posts.

Good luck.

Thanks Pardizzone:

I ended up purchasing an inexpensive Hard Drive Dock and am removing the information from the 4 hard drives that were in the EX470 and are now removed. I have successfully found and transferred my Documents (which was really critical). I found my music (not as critical, but nice), but haven't been able to find the photos as of yet. I'm going to try running the new 485 with the Hard Drives docked in a to-be-backed up computer with the new Media Collector running and see if it will pick up the music and the as yet "unfound" photos.
Any ideas or suggestions to help find the photos?
Interestingly, although these share folders were duplicated on the old 470 - the information shows up on only 1 of the hard drives (on different drives for the different folders.
BTW, the new 485 sure is a lot quieter. I went ballistic when the 485 install tried to get me to install McAfee that comes "bundled" but removing WHSTPS from the software file seems to get rid of the McAfee and the accompanying error message that one gets if you don't install it.

BetaVirus - thanks for your suggestion. Now that I know that the data can be removed from the individual drives, I'm not as concerned about backing up the WHS, but this is something that I will follow up on.

Thanks again - I sure feel better than I did yesterday. If I counted up all of the money and the lost time that McAfee has cost me - I might not feel as good as I do.

Were the photo's in the HP Webshare or in the default Photos share? If in the webshare, I believe those are in a folder on the D: partition on the System drive. The default Photos share should be somewhere on one or more of the other disks (it could also be on the System disk).
