I have an EX485 server, an x280n Mediasmart Connect (MSC) and a Vista Premium PC to host Media Center, and I am very puzzled.

When I have the x280n in Media Center Extender mode ("x280n MCE"), I can easily find and play an mpg file that resdes on my PC hard disk.

When I move the same file to the EX485, I can easily find it with the x280n MCE, but when I try to play it, I get the following message:

"Cannot Play Video
The file type cannot be recognized and cannot be played. Either the corect codec (a file that compresses/decompresses audio or video) is not installed or the file is corrupt."

This behavior seems to have started after I installed WHS PP2 and ran Meda Center Connector on my host PC, but I cannot be absolutely sure of the causality here.

So, the question for the studio audience is: why can't I play this mpg file when it's on the server?

Thanks!
Andy

What kind of MPEG file is it, exactly?

Are you streaming using Windows Media Sharing or with Twonky?

Hi Matt,

Thanks for replying so quickly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The file is MPEG-2. (I'm backing up my DVD's to server, since we lost a case of them when traveling last year. While I'm at it, I'd like to have them on the network for easy viewing. I convert from VOB to MPEG-2 using mpeg streamclip.)

When the x280n (HP Mediasmart Connect) is in its Windows Media Center Extender mode, I assume that it's using Windows Media Connector. There is a server that shows up on the x280n as "Windows Media Connect". In this mode, I can't play the mpeg-2 when the file is on the server, but I can play the mpeg-2 when the file resides on my host PC.

When the x280n is in its native mode (using the HP interface), then it uses Twonky and it has no problems playing the mpeg-2.

(Yes, the obvious answer is to use Twonky---but I really prefer the Windows Media Center interface with thumbnails and "metadata" for the files.)

Thanks again,
Andy

Have you run the WHS Media Center Connector on your MCE pc to setup the connection to allow MCE to read the files from WHS?

"everything will be ok in the end. if it's not ok, it's not the end" - unknown

Thanks very much for your suggestion.

Yes, I ran WHS Media Center Connector on the host PC. Is it possible that this is related to the issue?

Thanks,
Andy

The WHS Media Center Connector software enables Media Center to access the server. It shouldn't be the issue.
