It could be your internet connection is going out intermitantly. Whether it's your modem or router.
Categories: Networking and Remote Access
My EX485 has been on the Internet and running smoothly for several weeks. I had to manually do the port forwarding because of my dual router configuration. But all has been well. However, yesterday the EX485 decided to start giving me the following message on all of my networked PCs:
"Updating port forwarding for your router failed. Windows home server was unable to update port forwarding for your router. Your website may not be available on the Internet"
Well, my website IS still available on the Internet. If I log into the console and go to Remote Access it says "Verifying" and then says "Available". So, all is working well, except that WHS seems to be mad. I went to "Network Health Status" in the console and put a check mark in the "Ignore this issue" box. However, a little while later the message popped up on my PCs again. So, 3 questions:
1. Why did WHS all of a sudden, after several weeks, decide to try to update port forwarding on my router?
2. How do I tell it not to try to do this on its own again?
3. How do I convince it not to keep nagging my networked PCs about this?
Thanks

I don't think that's it. I've been on the Internet doing email and browsing at the same time as I have reset the message and watched it pop back up again a few minutes later.
Make sure uPNP is turned on on the router....
"everything will be ok in the end. if it's not ok, it's not the end" - unknown
Perhaps your IP address changed on your server... are you using a static IP address? Are you using UPNP? have you tried resetting your router?
My EX485 has a static IP address so it does not change. Perhaps it would be helpful to explain my configuration. I've got an Actiontec GD701 DSL Modem/Router, supplied by Qwest. Connected to that, via CAT-5 cable is a LinkSys WRT54G Wireless Router. My EX485, a desktop PC, and a printer, are connected via CAT-5 cables to the WRT54G. My laptop connects to the WRT54G via wireless.
The Actiontec is configured so that the LinkSys is in the Actiontec's DMZ. Port forwarding is done in the Actiontec to forward to the LinkSys in the DMZ and port forwarding is done in the LinkSys to forward to the EX485.
Everything works great and has been for a month or more. Now, all of a sudden, something has made WHS on the EX485 decide that it wants to "automatically" do port forwarding. I do NOT want it to mess with my Actiontec or LinkSys!!! It took me a long time to get this dual router configuration working properly and I don't want WHS messing with it.
The bottom line is that everything is still working fine. I have full remote access from the Internet, just like always. It's just that now I get this error message on all of the PCs that are connected to my network. If I log into the EX485 WHS console I can tell it to ignore this message, but a few minutes later it is back again.
I want to know why WHS all of a sudden started trying to auto-configure my routers. And how to tell it to stop.
I think it has to be Windows Home Server related, rather than domain related. The WHS softare on the EX485 would appear to be the thing that is insisting on updating the port forwarding settings on my router(s). It is equally strange that the WHS console doesn't honor my "Ignore this" check mark in the "Network Health" tab of the console.
Have you tried turning Remote Access off then back on again in the console?

I have the same issue. It gives me the warning for a few days and then stops. However there seem to be no connectivity problems. I dont know why it does it but doesnt seem to effect anything.
Well, mine has been doing it straight for a couple of weeks now. Very annoying. I have heard the same thing on other discussion lists. Several others having the same problem but no solution. Sigh...
I just purchased my HP MediaSmart server, an LX 195. I also purchased a new wireless router, a Linksys WRT400N, a dual band draft-N device that supposedly has UPnP. I am not able to automatically configure the router (I get an error shortly after it begins, saying it can't verify access on my local Web site). I have tried to manually configure the router, setting the HTTP, HTTPS, and Remote Proxy Server ports.
Now I am getting the same "Updating port forwarding for your router failed. Windows home server was unable to update port forwarding for your router. Your website may not be available on the Internet" message on my system tray HP MediaServer icon.
Any suggestions? I am going to call the HP Support Desk if I don't get it working soon. Remote access to my files was the main reason I bought the device.
Do you have a dual router configuration? In other words, do you have a cable modem or DSL modem that provides your Internet connection? And your WRT400N is then plugged into the cable or DSL modem? If so, then you have a dual router configuration, since the cable or DSL box is also a router. This makes configuration for Internet access to your MSS a WHOLE LOT more difficult. UPnP will not work. You will manually have to configure. In most cases you have to configure your cable or DSL box so that it puts your WRT400N in the cable/DSL box's "DMZ". This tells the cable/DSL box to forward all ports to your WRT400N and then you can manually forward the 3 desired ports in the WRT400N. Otherwise the cable/DSL box simply filters out the ports and does not forward them to the WRT400N, so even if you manually configure them there, nothing will work.
This is not a simple process. Things are much simpler if you have a cable or DSL modem that is also your wireless router. That way you only have 1 router to deal with and you have at least a prayer that UPnP will work. And if it doesn't, manually configuring the 3 ports is still pretty easy.
And by the way, since I originally started this thread when my EX485 all of a sudden started complaining about not being able to configure port forwarding: It is still nagging me about this. My Internet access continues to work fine, as it always has. I still don't know why it all of a sudden started griping, as it had worked fine for a couple of months with no nagging, but it looks like I'm stuck with the nagging.
I never considered the cable modem to be a "router", but I guess that makes sense. Should I add the MediaSmart's internal IP address to the DMZ page of my Linksys router? Also, should I make the MediaSmart's internal IP address static? Finally, should I disable the Linksys router's firewall and rely on the firewall software on my computers?
I appreciate your direction.
No, a cable modem is NOT a router, unless it is a combined modem/router. All it does is convert the signal (like any other modem). There are no internal settings for port forwarding or anything else.
Now a VOIP device, like vonage, IS a router and needs to be configured properly if it is in front of your network router.
As far as adding your MSS's IP to the DMZ page of your router I would not do that except for testing purposes. It is sufficient to add the 3 ports for your MSS. Best practice is to have your router be the DMZ and act as a firewall for your LAN only allowing the needed ports through. You would configure those under port forwarding if it does not have UPnP.
I had the same issue. When I bought my EX470, it was working fine, then I start getting that port forwarding message, now it doesn't even work the remote access. I also have a linksys cisco router
What happen if I have a cable modem or DSL modem that provides Internet connection?
Do I have to get a different router? Is there any brand in particular?
Thanks
See my post here: http://www.mediasmarthome.com/forum/thread/13497/I-Have-Dual-Router-Config-Do...
It contains documentation I created for a dual router setup. Maybe it will be helpful to you.
I have had the same issue for over a week with my HP Media Server. I changed the router settings for UPnP to the following:
Advertisement Period: 20 minutes
Advertisement Time to Live: 8 hops
I have a Netgear Rangemax WPN824v3. It helped a lot, but I still get the erroneous message 2-3 times per day. This is way better than every 2-3 minutes.
This started happening soon after a MS update! So, I am blaming them for this mess. I am not sure what the update was, since I have them set to automatically update my Homeserver. Due to the recent rash of this problem, someone at HP should look more seriously in to what updates have been pushed by MS to see why they are causing the problem.
I am having this issue on an HP 490. As with others, everything else is working, and if I go through the Domain Name Details verification, I get 4 green ticks. My single ADSL router is Solwise SAR-605EW.
