A good rule of thumb is to have at least 2 drives as part of the storage pool....so i would go with a ex487 which comes with 2 750GB drives.
Also, remember that the server will want to format any drives added to the pool, so you will have to copy everything over to the server and then add the dirve to the pool
A good configuration for you i think would be to get a 487 with 2x750GB and then add your 2TB drive. Then i would move the files you want to the server
As added protection, i would also enable folder duplication and i would add your 1TB drive as a backup drive for extra protection. Drives added as backups do not get added to the storage pool and it is used to backup your shared folders.
BUT...WD external "green drives" added to the storage pool do not work with the server b/c of their power management...they will work fine internally though

Hey, I'm about to pull the trigger on the MediaSmart EX485 and 1 or 2 WD 2TB Green drives. I already have a good amount of media on my PC and on external USB drives. I plan on backing up all my data, sharing some files with people and possibly streaming some media.
What I currently have:
1TB WD external usb drive(full and worried about the life of external HDs)
500GB WD external usb drive(full and worried about the life of external HDs)
~500GB internal drives my PC uses with data scattered all over
I would like to backup both external usb drives and what I have on my PC in the MediaSmart AND I would also like to have access to them from my PC and share the files with others.
I guess what I'm asking is:
1. What should I do with the external usb drives? Should I just copy everything over to the 2TB drive I'm buying for the MediaSmart? Should I leave the data in the usb drives as a backup? Erase everything after copying to the MediaSmart and use it for temp downloads before committing the data to be backed up on the MediaSmart?
2. Can the MediaSmart backup and share data that is only stored on the MediaSmart? In other words, is possible to have 2(or more) drives in the MediaSmart with one drive used for sharing and the other drive is a backup of it? Would it be stupid to even have a configuration like this? I guess that goes back to my first question of what I should do with the existing storage i have.
I would like everything to be shared AND backed up on the MediaSmart, since I don't really trust the externals and for the convenience of just dropping stuff on it to share and have it backed up automatically. I'm just a little undecided on how many drives I should buy for the MediaSmart and how to integrate it into my current system. Thanks for any advice.

So are you saying to copy all my data onto the new drives on the server and use the externals as backups? The externals only add up to 1.5TB. So would backups be split between the externals and on the server? Also, are you saying to remove the drive that's in my external and add it into my server because of the power management not making it compatible?
