I hope I'm making this harder than it is.  I've posted a few questions but am left more confused.  This has to be easier than I'm making it.

I want to copy my DVD's the the MSS and then watch them on our XBOX.  I'd prefer an option that does not include re-encoding to preserve quality and save time.

I read to rip the DVD to one large VOB file and change the extension to .mpg but the XBOX does not support mpg, only avi and wmv.  I also have problems just viewing those files in Windows Media Player.

Than I looked at the built-in Twonky or installing tversity onto the MSS.  I didn't know if these would accomplish my goal or not.

I figure someone's been through this before and, like I said, there's got to be an easier way.

You'll end up reencoding in the end as I haven't found a good way to get DVD rips or vobs to play reliably on the Xbox or PS3 for that matter.

What you need to do is take a step back and look at what the Xbox your using supports for formats/containers/codecs. I have a 360 and used this page to determine what the 360 supports:

http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/gamesandmedia/movies/videofaq/viewv...

Then I looked at what the MSS supports with PP2:

MP4 audio and video file support has been added and content that is stored on your home server and that is shared via Windows Media Connect, including files with extensions .mp4, .m4v, .m4b and .m4a

Then I use Handbrake to convert any media I have that I will be playing on the 360 to mp4 (via the 360 preset in Handbrake) as the other network streamers I have support it also.

Hey, thanks for the info. Why do you use Handbrake instead of the HP Video Converter? Did you install Handbrake on the MSS?

I have a first gen MSS and a home built WHS so no access to the HP converter. Handbrake is run on a desktop pc and then I move the file out to my WHS when their converted.

Are you talking home movie DVDs (made with a camcorder) or commercial DVD rips?

Commercial DVD rips.

These are DVD's I've bought, just to be clear.  I'm looking for the convenience of not flipping the discs in and out and avoiding damage to the disc itself.  I've already replaced too many due to scratches.

If you're ripping discs, I'd stick with Pardizzone's advice and use handbrake or an alternative encoding program. I've talked about some of the pitfalls using the HP Video Converter with commercial DVDs in my 2.5 review: http://www.mediasmarthome.com/article/11958/HP-MediaSmart-Server-Update-2.5-H...
