UPS just delivered my ex485 and I can't wait to go home and play with it over the weekend. I thought i'd run these questions by the community prior to diving in.

1)  I have 2 new 1.5TB Seagates on the way, and another 1.5TB@ 70% full I intend to pull out from my PC to use in my MSS.  But the drive requires warranty service, I want to move the data off to my MSS.  Can I just plug it into the MSS and have it transfer the data from my old drive to the new ones?  I'm assuming that's a lot faster then having it go over the network.

 2) Since i'll have 3 1.5TB drives...is there any advantage to swapping the main (750gb) drive to a 1.5TB also...other then having more storage? A lot of posts on the forum says to just keep the drive that came with the MSS...and expand via USB/eSATA

 3) Is there a recommended limit to the number of Add-Ins? I read a post about the MSS 100% CPU utilization.  A comment was that it was probably due to an add-in.  There's just a lot of add-ins I thought would be nice to have.

 4) Vista 64.  I recalled reading a thread that vista-64 support was added after PP1.  I saw another article on the site with instructions to use a 32-bit machine to start the install first. Could someone clarify this for me please.

 5) Winrar - I intend to run uTorrent on my MSS.  A lot of the things downloaded are compressed into small winrar files.  Should I copy the files over to my PC prior to unpacking them, then move  them back to the MSS?  Or can it be done over the network?

Thanks in advance. Can't wait to go home to plug it in!!!!

Welcome to the forums...

1.) It would definately be faster to install the drive in the server but you need to do the copy by hand I believe (I don't have a 485 so someone please correct me if I'm wrong). You would need to remote into the server via Remote Desktop to accomplish it. If you have the time, I would just let the server copy it over the network.

2.) The best practice (per Microsoft) is to use your "largest" drive as the system drive. This gives the server a large "Landing Zone" for when you copy data to the server as the size of your landing zone limits the amount you can copy at any one time. Meaning, if you had a 60Gb and a 500Gb drive in the server and the 60Gb is the system drive, you would only be able to copy 40Gb of data to the server. You would then need to wait for the balancing to finish before you could copy anymore data. The OS takes up 20Gb of the system drive and the rest ends up as the landing zone. The landing zone will also be reduced by the pc backups.

3.) It all depends on what the add-in uses for memory. The more you load, the more memory/cpu is used depending on the add-in.

4.) Yes, you will need to use  32bit machine to do the initial setup. Once PP1 is installed you can connect the 64bit machine.

5.) I only use my server for storage (downloading done on anotner machine) so i can't comment. Maybe someone the uses torrents can answer this.

Hope this helps....

thanks Pardizzone...you probably saved me a few hours of frustration. I was thinking the PP1 would already be loaded on this machine.  I'll pull one of my laptops to install the PP1

I'm trying to think if i'd copy more then 730gb (750 minus the OS), but those 1.5tb drives arent too pricey and I might as well fill all 4 slots with them.

My intention for the MSS was solely for storage.  But after reading that it could run uTORR directly on it...I find turning off my PC would be ideal.  Costco gave me an extra drive..so i'll pop it in and and so some short DLs on it.  Figure i'll pull the drives out and restore it on the 1.5tb's anyways.

THANKS!!!!

(2) Since WHS no longer uses a "landing zone" that is not a factor in the decision process. And even then the key was that the free space on the System Drivee needed to be greater that the largest files you would be transferring. Today it is a waste to put your largest drive in the System Drive position UNLESS you know that (1) you will be installing that size drive in ALL your MSS slots in the near future and (2) you will NOT need to add an expansion chassis to meet your needs in the future.

(3) MOST Add-Ins really do not take much memory. I have an excessive number as well as a couple applications running on the WHS Desktop and I see only 1.1 GB of memory used. Obviously there are going to be exceptions that use a lot but you can go to the Remote Desktop, start up the Task Manager and look at the amount of memory being used. More important is to avoid the Add-Ins that seem to be problematic to the largest number of folks -- and the only one I know of in that category is the McAfee one that comes with the MSS.

(4) You have an EX485, not an EX470. I believe you already have the updates necessary to go set up the MSS with an x64 client.

For the BEST TECHNICAL advice on the HP MSS I continue to recommend the Media Smart Blog linked at the lower right of the home page here.

thanks John...

You're right about the x64 support. And I took your advice and just loaded up on the apps I wanted (minus 1 until I get a UPS that supports the feature). Thanks for the heads up on McAfee. I almost installed it.

I did come across a couple of issues while playing with my MSS. I did a server restore (which added another annoyance) thinking I may have messed something up. But it didn't go away. Using Advanced Admin Console /show desktop - i'm unable to use mouse buttons (left click/right click). I have to tab to the icon I want and hit enter and use my keyboard to do things (run, copy, paste, etc). The mouse pointer works fine though.

The added annoyance - after I did the server restore, it asked me to make my PC login to match my server login (otherwise it would always prompt me to login. My PC never had a password prior to this. I just thought it was weird that it asked me to change it on the server restore, but not when I first set it up.

Mouse Buttons: I do not see this behavior on any client (or mouse, trackball, pad, etc.) that I have ever worked with using Advanced Admin. Did you select the "Show Desktop" before "minimizing" the console? What are you using for a mouse? Does it require any special drivers that may not be in the MSS/WHS? You may want to uninstall the Advanced Admin Console Add-In, restart the server and reinstall it.

Password: I don't know how long ago you originally installed the WHS software on the MSS but you would have entered a password. It's easy to forget if you do it right and have the userid/password in MSS match the one on the client as you never enter it again (unless you change the password).

Hey, I use the WHS uTorrent addin and do all my torrenting on the MSS. I have Winrar installed and use it all the time with no troubles. What I do is remote desktop to the server and unrar from there. It's quicker that way.

I'm using a Logitech G5. I'm thinking maybe it would require the setpoint software loaded on the WHS. But i'll try another mouse first before I go loading things on the MSS. I did try to uninstall/reinstall...still the same results though. I think you're right on the password too...probably forced it to match my desktop (blank). I see now why they must match =)

Thanks for the help guys. In the process of moving, so only get a bit of free time to come back here to play with my MSS.
