The media collector on my MediaSmart (EX487) has shown the same Media Collection Status and date (says in progress) when I view it using the Media Colelctor Status on my desktop.  Seems like it hung during a collection but never reset itself so it could try again and it has been a couple weeks (just got to it now...).  I have restarted the server and of course the desktop but neither has fixed it.  Any ideas on a way to "Reset" the collection so it will try again? I am still learning the server as it is new to me and only had it a few weeks.

 Thanks very much!

-First, you have to delete the XML file located in C:\Users\*user*\AppData\Local\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart Server\MediaCollectorStatus.xml for Vista or
C:\Documents and Settings\*user*\Local Settings\Application Data\Hewlett-Packard\Hp MediaSmart Server\MediaCollectorStatus.xml for XP.
-Now go to the server's shares and delete the XML from here \\HPSERVER\Music\*Computer*_MediaCollectorStatus_*user*.xml
-it might also be a good idea to delete the log file located in C:\Temp\Hp MediaSmart Server\Log\MediaAggregator_*User*.txt
-Delete the *User*-mediaAgg file in task scheduler and reboot pc

Almost done...lol

-after the pc is done rebooting, kick start the collector here C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Hp MediaSmart Server\MediaManager.exe and this will create a new task and a new log file.

Hope this helps!

Thank you VERY much for the post, I've saved these instructions to my PC. They worked perfectly! Thanks again for taking the time to help me out!!!

Cheers!

I tried your suggestion, but can't seem to find the file called mediamanager.exe and thus aren't able to start. Am running a ex485. Any suggestions?

thanks

the file should be located in C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Hp MediaSmart Server\MediaManager.exe for both Vista and XP.....
are you sure you are selecting your user?? The file may not have the .exe attached to it and may just be mediamanager
If you cannot find it, you might have to run a recovery to get that file back

Cheers!

Fendrix - you are my hero. Been wondering why this darn thing hasn't backed up my pics since May. Not sure where it went wrong, but I followed your instructions and it's collecting again. Thank you!!!!

I tried all this but it does not recreate the task ? the other files (XML) are actually recreated and the log file seems to indicate that mediamanager has run.
thanks.

I'm having problems with Media Collector as well for my new HP EX485. I've deleted the .xml files from the server's folders, but there is not an .xml file on my system (Vista 64 Ultimate). I've tried multiple solutions including the one listed above, but it still does not work. This is the log file:

Aggregating at 10:24:47 PM on 8/27/2009
Aggregating for user ****** on ******
ServerName is HPSERVER
Getting last run time
Loading configuration
Error during configuration load
Exception: System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden.
at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse()
at MediaManager.MediaMgrConfig.LoadConfig(String serverName)
This client is not configured to aggregate
Completed aggregation

I have been looking in vain for a solution, but thus far, no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

open the control center from your desktop....how many icon do you have under TOOLS???....should be 6 icons....if not 6 then you need to update your connector

Next, does your windows username and password match the one on your server??
Open CMD and type "echo %username%" without the quotes and hit enter.
Make sure your username/password on yoru server matches this onoe

I am having this same fight with my wife's computer. I did all the instructions here including the scheduled task deletion. The kickstart ran the collector on her computer perfectly. But just that day. It just doesn't seem to check on it's own.

September 6, 2009 6:46 AM

hmm, thats odd.....have you checked the log file in C:\Temp\Hp MediaSmart Server\Log\MediaAggregator_*User*.txt ?????

Check the task and go into triggers->edit...and set it to run indefinately...hope this helps

PS...you have to double click teh task to edit it ;)

My media collection crashes every week to two week where I have to reset as documented above. The reset works like a charm, but the issue is why it stops collecting. I use it mostly for photos for my family to link to and add about 200 per week. The setting is to collect every hour, and I just changed it to daily to see if that makes a difference. I am also getting several hard drive warnings to repair the drive and/or rebuild the database. The repairs are always successful. I am backing up 6 PCs and 4 Macs. Only one PC is being used for media collection. I have not been able to correlate drive problems to media collection problems yet.

October 4, 2009 5:29 AM

if you keep getting warnings about repairing the drive, i suspect that the drive will fail soon.

On the colector side, if it runs for a week or so and then stops, i would check the scheduled task. Set it to indefinate in the triggers. Hope this helps

I've tried all the suggestions in the note. Deleted the .xml file on my PC, deleted the scheduled task on my PC. Disabled and reenabled collection on my PC from the MediaServer media collector control panel.

My username and password are identical on the server and the PC. But I still get the dreaded
Error during configuration load
Exception: System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden.
at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse()
at MediaManager.MediaMgrConfig.LoadConfig(String serverName)
This client is not configured to aggregate
Completed aggregation

Now what? I sure what like to know what config it's trying to load and how I could fix it! All my wife's music is now on the server, but none of mine :-(

if you type "whoami" without the quotes in a command prompt....this username and PW match the user on your server?

Also, the 403 error seems to be related to the connector and server software not matching. Make sure that you have 6 icons in the control center under tools. Also, i would go to http://servername:55000 and download the connector.

If none of this works, then I'm stumped:S

October 11, 2009 6:41 PM

Thanks. Whoami showed me that I was not who I thought I was on my own computer. As you suspected, the names don't match. I'll have to fix that.

October 11, 2009 11:23 PM

cool, that should do it....just remember to reboot pc and you should be golden

November 1, 2009 11:18 AM

how do I change the name in my root directory

the whoami result is different than my user name

November 5, 2009 11:55 PM

what OS are you running on the pc?

November 15, 2009 9:28 AM

It runs vista home premium.

The media collector collected 1700 files but 2900 are in pending status from this laptop and have been there for a week or so.

I have no pending files on the collections from the other computers in my network.

thanks for any suggestions

jeff
