Hi Everyone:

I just upgraded my brand new HP EX-485 WHS. I used the Intel Dual-Core E5200 (2.5GHz, 800 FSB, 2MB L2 cache).

I followed Donavon West from www.HomeServerHacks.com instructions. (Thanks Donavon).

The server is working just fine. There are no issues to report.

Here's some pics:

Thanks to everyone on this great forum and the entire WHS family.

So dismantled the HP MediaSmart was not hard, put the new CPU in reassembled the Mediasmart, and poof, she wouldn't post.... so I refitted the old cpu and still nothing, the system lights come on and that's it. So be careful as somehow the process has bricked my Mediasmart. :( Will see what I can do to bring this system back to life.
Wow! Sorry to hear that. I've had that experience and it's very upsetting... I would suggest to make sure the hard disk back-plane board is securely seated onto the main board. Sometimes it's a bit tricky. Hope it works out for you...
Just what i was thinking as the hardrive lights do not even flicker, i did push down on it , but i will try to reseat it.
Well I reseated the back-plane and even found a possible connection that wasn't fully seated, but no joy. The system lights come on and shut down several times before just staying on. There appears to be no power getting to the hard drives, will call support this evening to see what they say.

Also, it's very important that you keep the correct order of the hard drives. Make sure HD1 (OS) is back in slot 1, otherwise your system won't boot up...

Here are some reports as promised:

I ran the OCCT stress test without any errors.

OCCT

Question: Why is the CPU Frequency not 2500?

 Hardware status before OCCT (iddle/normal)

Normal CPU

During OCCT strees test:

Stress test

OCCT Reports -

CPU1 results

CPU results

Is it normal that OCCT is showing 1197.15MHz for CPU and 199.53MHz for FSB?? I thought it should read 2500MHz for the CPU and 800MHz for FSB...

Dear Marcos:

The CPU and FSB speeds will throttle back when the load level drops. If you use CPU-Z to check those speeds while work is underway or when using OCCT you'll see them maxed out at that time. Note also that you have to multiply the FSB speed by 4 to get the memory speed on a DDR-2 PC so the 199.5 number reflects an FSB of 798, which is still very, very close to 800.

it's official, swapping out my CPU for what ever reason, bricked my MediSmart, I have a new enclosure on the way. Seems the drives are fine, but the system will not boot or go into recovery mode. Even a factory reset failed. So be careful. My system was revision B.

Ouch! I find myself wondering what happened here. This is a first for me, and I've performed between 8 and 10 CPU upgrades myself, and read about dozens to hundreds more.

Weird.

I ordered my E5200 today. Hopefully I'll have time this weekend to make the switch. I'll let you know how it goes. :)

Not sure myself, unless the system was fragile and disassembly triggered a pending hardware failure somehow.

Good Day,

I've had my ex485 for a approximately, one month. I've read through several forums in regards to upgrading the cpu on this unit. As per your results with the Intel Dual-Core E5200, I'm considering following this installation on mine as well.

Has anyone attempted on upgrading or replacing the system board on this unit at all? I haven't been successful in finding any information about any attempts online. is it at all possible? If so, does anyone know of any recommendations for this type of enhancement?

Well got my replacement enclosure and everything runs fine, should I attempt the update again Undecided

No it was HP, they responded very quickly and shipped out a new enclosure. Cool

May 1, 2009 1:19 PM

just an enclosure or a whole new unit?

The whole unit minus the hard drives. So all I did was insert the original drives.

@techaholick ...Nice! Are they expecting you to return the defected chasis/board? Let us know how it the cpu upgrade goes with the new chasis-board. I'm thinking of getting the E5200 CPU myself, just waiting on further testing being done to ensure its stable enough / worth the upgrade. Good luck mate!

@WHS4u...during the OCCT stress/load test, the reading of your CPU frequency/speed was 11**ghz instead of the default 2.5Ghz. Anyone idea why it was not reading correctly?

Yes they are, and Poof, new CPU up and running Cool no probs, knew something was wromg last time.

So, to sum up this thread....

...the E5200 is the proc to get? Are the temps all within reason?

cgi:

I posted the same question in an earlier post:

"Is it normal that OCCT is showing 1197.15MHz for CPU and 199.53MHz for FSB??  I thought it should read 2500MHz for the CPU and 800MHz for FSB..."

and this is Ed Tittle's reply:

Ed is correct, however, I am thinking it may be necessary to enter the BIOS setup and change the CPU settings manually (multipliers, etc). Maybe HP configured the BIOS to automatically default to the Celeron cpu settings. I don't know this, I'm just thinking out loud...

I may get this: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3980

in order to do this: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2009/01/09/how-to-unlock-the-ex487-bios/

and play with the BIOS settings... specifically this screen: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/bios_advanced.jpg

you shouldn't need to do that unless you want to OC it.

I didn't like how it couldn't pass the occt test.. so I picked up a used E4300 (C2D 2Ghz). Installed without a hitch, idles at 45c and passed OCCT with flying colors.

I'm not sure, but I think the fact that the E4320 (C2D 2.16Ghz) has the 1066 FSB was causing the stability issues.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but through some remedial googling I found that the Pentium Dual Core is essentially a core 2 duo with 2MB of cache instead of 3, no virtualization support, and locked at 800FSB. Seems like a better bet to me. I think that might be my next step.

The only issue I'm having now is finding 4gb dimm's for less then $200. It's damn near impossible to find pc2-6400 (800Mhz) non ecc unbuffered 4GB dimm's for a reasonable price. I wonder what the performance hit would be with 667Mhz ram? That's easy to find.
