Hi Everyone:

I just upgraded my brand new HP EX-485 WHS. I used the Intel Dual-Core E5200 (2.5GHz, 800 FSB, 2MB L2 cache).

I followed Donavon West from www.HomeServerHacks.com instructions. (Thanks Donavon).

The server is working just fine. There are no issues to report.

Here's some pics:

Thanks to everyone on this great forum and the entire WHS family.

Dear Marcos:

Congrats! What kinds of other temperatures are you seeing? If you haven't already downloaded and installed HWMonitor (www.cpuid.com) or SpeedFan (http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php) I recommend either one highly for helping you monitor and manage operating temps.

One tip, based on LOTS of experience with upgrading the older EX-47* models: keep a close eye on temps for a while, and also check Event Viewer daily for a while for errors and warnings, especially from these sources: WNAS (System log) and MediaSmartServer (App log).

Ed:

The CPU temp. ranges between 56 and 60 Celsius. I really don't remember what it was before with the original Celeron CPU.

Thanks for the software links, I'll try these.

Most of the Celeron temps I've seen reported are in the range of 30 to 40 Celsius. 60 is about as much as the cooling in the MSS enclosure can handle. You might want to think about leaving the front door on your unit open, and adding a small room/box fan to provide additional ventilation.

HTH, and thanks for sharing your info. FYI, I'm going to be looking into improved cooling solutions for the box as I experiment with CPU mods as well. What led you to choose the E5200, BTW? Just curious...

The E4300 idles at about 35 C according to this anandtech story (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=28&threadid=2125596&entert... Did you consider this as an alternative? Again, just curious...

Thanks,

Keep a VERY close watch on things. It's good you have it running, but that is, I believe, a 65w chip. Experience has shown that these probably draw more power than the MSS can supply, at least based on EX47x experience and some other early experiments with the EX48x. It may become unreliable under load. I suggest you do some stress testing with OCCT or Orthos before you rely on it with critical data.

You may want to check out this thread: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3667

I'll follow this thread closely as I am VERY interested in upgrading the processor on my EX485!

for the record, an e6600 (c2d 2.4ghz) does NOT work :)

I figure if any of the putatively 65W TDP parts (basically, all of the desktop core duos or core 2 duos) will work, it will be the slower (2.0 GHz or slower), cooler-running members of the family. Hence, my earlier question about the E4300 (which I plan to try myself). Thanks for posting,

Ed:

Back in December, I built my first WHS. It was a Shuttle K45 with a Celeron 440 CPU. After a month with the Celeron, I upgraded the CPU to the Dual Core E5200. It was mainly price to performance ratio that made me choose it. At first I was happy with the K45, but then the 2 internal hard drive limitation and the noisy fans made me look for other options. (I know they sell a fanless ICE cooling system, but did not wanted to spend an additional $50.00 for it.)

2 weeks ago I saw the HP ver. 2.5 upgrade posting plus the $450.00 price for a brand new Ex-485 from Newegg.com, that's when I took the plunge and got the server.

I love the EX-485. I looked into several NAS including Synology, Thecus, etc. and I think HP has the best hardware/software integration package; except the CPU. So I pulled the Intel E5200 CPU from the K45 and into the HP.

Without getting too technical, there are 2 things that made sense to me:

1. If the K45 has the older Intel 945 chipset and can handle the E5200, the HP EX-485 should not have a problem with the newer G35 chipset.

2. The K45 has a 100 watt power supply and so does the HP server.

I mentioned in an earlier post the temperature reading is around 60 celcius, however I just checked again and it is down to 52c (idle). This temp. reading will go down a few degrees. When I swapped the CPU, I ran out of Artic Silver Thermal compound and what I did was scrape the compound from the old CPU and stick it to the new one. (I know shoddy work but I had no choice. The compound is on the way).

This coming week I will run more tests and report back. Hope this helps.

Temps are fine.. My EX485 idles between 55-60 with the celeron.

(I've posted on a couple other forums as well.. success with a C2D 2.16Ghz.)

So I got bored.. I had another PC with an E6420 (C2D 2.16 Ghz) laying around and I figured what the hell..

Here's the before:

Here's the after:

I'm not too happy about the full load temps, but its still within spec..

hwmonitor shows a different temp range as well.

I'm keeping a very close eye on the temps, I'll report back if anything flaky happens.

Flip -

Thanks for the update. I notice that CPU-Z only shows 1 core. Same thing with task manager performance. Do we really know if the system is able to use both core's?

I saw that as well.. a reboot fixed it..

OCCT knocks it out after about 20 minutes.. (ie. reboots)

That's consistent with pretty much everyone's experience using a chip >45w on the MSS units. Some do not make it that long, some 45w don't make it either.

I didn't do anything special with hwmonitor... It just opened up like that.

Great info. I've been thinking about going to the next level with a Core2 Duo E7500 upgrade... but I will wait to see some more of your results. Please keep us posted.

Can you explain a bit more what happened with the Intel E6600.

Thanks

Nothing special with the e6600.. It just wouldn't post. Power light came on and the server status light stayed white, and just hung there.

I'm away from home and will get back on Tuesday. I will run OCCT and see how the E5200 and EX485 behave together...

I have had CPUID Hardware Monitor running all day on my stock EX485 which has been running the video converter for several days now. The high temp shown today is 71 degrees. That seems rather high to me with the stock CPU. The EX485 is in a well ventilated area and is in the basement so it is a few degrees cooler there than the rest of the house. Should the temps be getting that high with the stock machine?

Well I rushed out and bought an Intel E5200 from MicroCenter. Then I followed the step by step instructions listed above. I have build over a dozen gaming systems and servers. So dismantled the HP MediaSmart was not hard, put the new CPU in reassembled the Mediasmart, and poof, she wouldn't post.... so I refitted the old cpu and still nothing, the system lights come on and that's it. So be careful as somehow the process has bricked my Mediasmart. :( Will see what I can do to bring this system back to life.

Wow! Sorry to hear that. I've had that experience and it's very upsetting... I would suggest to make sure the hard disk back-plane board is securely seated onto the main board. Sometimes it's a bit tricky.

Hope it works out for you...

Just what i was thinking as the hardrive lights do not even flicker, i did push down on it , but i will try to reseat it.

Well I reseated the back-plane and even found a possible connection that wasn't fully seated, but no joy. The system lights come on and shut down several times before just staying on. There appears to be no power getting to the hard drives, will call support this evening to see what they say.
