I can't give any advice on the WHS (don't have one yet). But, I can tell you that I have the XBox 360 Elite and I have never been sorry or disappointed. I am not much of a gamer, but stream my Media Center recorded tv, pictures, lots of music, watch dvds on it, play cds and watch Netflex movies. My Linksys network router and primary PC are located several rooms away from the Elite and I get excellent connectivity. With the XBox 360, my daughter and I do play games together while talking and seeing each other via the XBox Vision Camera and voice accessory on the controller; she lives 400 miles away. Your personal set up will be different, I'm sure, but for me it was an excellent purchase.

Hello,
After 3 weeks of fighting with old CDs I have everything soterd on my 2TB WHS.
My plan is to have a possibility to stream music/videos from my WHS while I'm outside of my home network,
what do I need to be able to do it? I know it may sound as a lack of will to search, truth is I've spent hours of reading and browsing through the forums and feel like knowing less than before.
Could anyone please help me in a "not only for idiots" way? Thank you in advance.
Second thing is I'm planning to buy an xbox 360 elite to be able to watch movies/picture/listen to the music on my TV.
Any tips regarding this issue?
Thank you in advance,
Lukasz

Your questions:
Q. Streaming music/videos from WHS
A. It depends what you want to stream to. If you're looking to stream to an Iphone/Ipod touch, I strongly recomond Simplify Media. If you want to stream to a web browser, I'd recommend using FireFly Media server in conjunction with FirePlay. I can provide sites that walk you through installing either. Note both solutions only stream audio, I haven't been successful installing anything that allow video streaming (that doesn't mean it can't be done... just I haven't tried hard enough).
Q. Streaming to Xbox 360
A. My server came preinstalled with PV Connect (I am a proud owner of a HP Home Server). My guess is PV can be installed on any other WHS as well. PV makes streaming easy. Just tell PV where your media is, and viola your xbox can find the media (really its that easy).
Hope this helps and let me know if more info is needed.

Maybe I was not clear enough.
Situation at present is that I've moved all my video files, music files to HP Server, while being in home network there is no problem to watch movies and listen to the music over LAN.
What I want to do is to be able my self and for set up users to do the same while being away, meaning over the internet, outside of home network.
Second I want to be able using xbox360 to connect my TV to the server to watch movies, pictures and listen to the music stored on the server.
Thanks for help in advance

When you say "PV Connect" are you refering to Twonkey Media?

Yup... just realized PVConnect wasTwonkey Media... apparently the one that comes preinstalled doesn’t say Twonkey anywhere in the Server Counsel

To do this I used FirePlay which lets you stream audio using a web interface. The link below should help gettnig it set up. Note that this will only stream music... I have yet to find anything that will let you stream video.

My HP Server came preinstalled with PVConnect (or Twonky Media), if I remember correctly I just needed to install the addin from the Server Console. Then I told it which folders to share. Then I was able to access the files from my xbox.

I'll check if I have PVConnect preinstalled.
Regarding streaming this is one solution, but I'd prefer to do it with winamp or other music/video player (like subedit) not over the web interface but just to enter the web address like: myserver.com and direct to shared folder. Is it possible?

If your willing to use iTunes you could install Simplify on the your server and any client PC's you want to listen on. Its free and I know it works with iTunes... and says it works with winamp (though I havent tested it).

The other option is to set up and install a vpn on the server. Hamachi is free (for non commercial use) secure vpn software. In theory if you install Hamachi on both the server and client pc's you it will look like you are in your home network allowing you full access to your shared files. I'm testing it now and will let you know how it goes.
Hamachi's URL

Many others will be VERY interested in your VPN results... Thanks in advance for the results report!

Ok, so this is going to be a little brief as I'm not totally done testing.
So here's how far I've gotten.
I've installed Hamachi on my server and laptops. Installation on the server couldn’t have been easier. It installs just like any normal desktop, once done with setup you go into the Settings - > System screen. From there you select the option to run "Hamachi as a service", check the appropriate boxes, and then reboot the server. On the client (remote pc) you install the client and you’re done.
Note:
1. I’m not going into how to create or join netwoks as Hamachi's site does a great job at that.
2. In my case I've installed Hamachi on my laptop, in this use I only run the Hamachi client when outside of my network (not at home), this helps to prevent confusion on what network I'm on.
So I've tried streaming some of my video content from the home server with "not great" results. My movies will stream after buffering for a VERY long time and then freeze after 5 min or so to rebuffer. I've only used Windows Media player, and as of yet I haven’t tinkered with different encoding methods or buffering settings. I also haven’t had an opportunity to try streaming music yet. While these aren’t the best results, once Hamachi was up and running I was able to see all of my network drives as if I were home.
More to follow….
Did you try to use different VPN client on your laptop to use with Hamachi on the server? Will it support different VPN client.
Question because I've already one client installed on my laptop and would like to avoid possible conflicts.

I too am very interested in this. I have been scouring the internet for a solution and can't find one either. Fortunately I just stumbled over this.
I would like to set up a Hamachi network with a friend who lives 45 miles away from me. On this network I would like to accomplish a couple of things:
1. Is to stream media files (mainly video) back and forth via Hamachi onto my 360, because between us we have a massive library backed up. If not then on a modded Xbox, but would way prefer a 360.
2. I would also like to have a gaming server set up with our modified xbox's so we could play modded games together over system link.
Now I'm not so much worried about number two, because I know I can do that in XBConnect or Xlink Kai, but I wouldn't be able to have a network with the gaming sessions modded maps for us to play. And number one is the real reason why I started research on this project.
So I guess essentially what I'm trying to say is do you think the first idea will work? And by work I mean will it have a decent enough connection to stream it without interruption (I wouldn't mind a long queue time, but of course would prefer not to have one.)
Also I have a decent knowledge about connections so if you need anyone to help test anything let me know. I will contribute as much as I can to work this out.

LukaszI haven't tried it with multiple VPN clients as I only have the one... however it should work as with Hamachi, your other VPN software should only be active when "turned on" (enabled?) and my guess is that you only have it enabled when using it, otherwise it should be dormant.

A.
To make this work you'd need to have Hamachi installed at the 'network' level, which would be either on the router that the xbox is connected to (which I have no idea how to accomplish)
OR
If you were to plug your xbox into a pc, set up internet sharing (so the pc becomes the network provider), and run Hamachi on the pc... This MAY work (it's worth a try at least).
Now if the whole connect your xbox to a pc and do internet sharing thing works... it should look like you and your friend are on the same network, thus the systemlink thing (for gaming) should work, and you should be able to stream media from his network to your xbox.
However, this is all theory, in practice I have no idea what type of performance you should expect (the tubes being... well... tubes and all... and what's being tried here is as close to a dump truck as you can get).
Please let us/me know what you run into.
(you'll also note a LOT of "should"s in what I'm suggesting... so it might not be such a bad idea to swing a rubber chicken, throw a pinch of salt... and/or do any other "good luck" ceremonies before starting... cauz you'll definitely need as much good voodoo on your side before starting).
(Edited for spelling)
Mr Ant ;)
Sorry its been a few days... I've had computer issues.
So where did we leave off. I know I had suggested using VPN... were you able to use Hamachi while another vpn software was installed?
It appears you asked if another vpn client could be used... it shouldnt matter what vpn software you use, I perfer Hamachi... cause... well its free and I'm cheap ;)
To be honest I'm looking for anything what will let me using data stored on server while I'm away from local network.
I'm not keen on using vpn but if it is only solution I'll have to.
I'd like to use Winamp for music and Subedit for movies.
Server is accesible remotely as webshare and log in are possible.
