I have a fully updated Vista Ultimate 64-bit installation on two 1TB drives (C and D) set up on a Mac Pro using Bootcamp. All of my programs and files are on the C drive. The D drive (which is now failing according to SMART) only has some of the Vista boot information, but the system would not boot into Vista without the D drive. The total content on the D drive is less than 2GB.
Both the C and D drives were backed up as recently as last week to my HP EX470 (which also is fully updated, including Powerpack 1). If possible, I would like to replace the D drive with a new 1TB unformatted hard drive and then restore from the EX470. I have never done a restoration before. I can download the WHS restore program from Microsoft and burn a CD, but would appreciate advice on what to do thereafter.
For example, will the restoration restore the boot sector of the D drive? Do I need to restore the C drive, too, even thought it is functioning well and has much more material (about 230GB) and an even more recent backup than the D drive? Do I need to format the new drive to NTFS before proceeding with restoration or will the restore process do the formatting? Will the 64-bit drivers for Vista on the Mac Pro also work with the restoration disk?
Please forgive my ignorance, but I would welcome step-by-step advice before proceeding. It was a quite a chore to install Vista SP1 originally on the Mac Pro, and I'm hoping not to have to start from scratch.
Many thanks in advance for your suggestions!
