So, maybe this isn't as cut and dried as the title implies - which is why I have it posted in the setup and installation sub forum . . .

Here's my first problem.

I have an EX-470 with 3 500 Gig hard drives and 2 Gigs of RAM that I purchased about a month ago.  Aside from the common nits (no serial, no sound, no video and no leybord, no auto powerup), I find it to be a reasonable (and much quieter) replacement for my Dell Poweredge 2350 - except that I had a 5 drive RAID with a hotspare on that and this has . . . . well, nothing.

What I wanted to do was to continue to have my file server (at least THAT works well enough) and two applications.

The first, an audio recording application seems to work well enough.  I needed two microphone inputs, so I purchased two USB sound adapters on Ebay for less than $6 shipped from Hong Kong.  That works well enough except that the microophone gain controls are slaved for the two adapters (which has to be a bug) and there is some electrical noise on the recorded audio from the power supply.

The second is the one I have trouble with.

I would have used Hyperterminal to collect the serial data from a logger on my phone system.  But of course Hyperterminal doesn't ship with WHS.  So I resurrected the copy of Xtalk (Crosstalk XVI) I ran on my Dell under Windows 2000 Server.

The application requires a serial port (which I solved by using a USB serial adapter).

1. I run the application and immediately get an error "NTVDM encountered a hard error" which, if I click ignore allows the program to run just fine.  Searching the web revealed some potential issues, but none of the propsed solutions resolves the problem.

2. Further, when I close and restart the application, which opens a file on the shared drive supposedly to be appended to, it deletes and restarts the file - not acceptable.

3. Lastly, about once a week I get a 'file conflict error'.  It is reportedy a problem with the log (capture) file.  I have to exit the application, rename the old file and restart the process which is simply stupid.

Anyone have any suggestions?

1. RAID -- You may not have RAID but you DO have the Extender. Over time you will likely find this superior to RAID for the reasons listed in a number of other threads.

2. SOUND -- This is a server, not a PC. It is not intended for doing direct sound recording. That said, I think you would see the same "slaving" of the gains on any PC. (I have seen this using USB microphones on XP and on Vista.) You will likely need a "sound recording" application to get around this.

3. ELECTRICAL NOISE -- This is likely caused by the microphones rather than the MSS. I'd have to hear it to know for sure but it could be a grounding problem.

4. SERIAL PORT -- Use a USB-to-serial adapter as you have discovered. They work fine.

5. APPLICATIONS -- I doubt these are intended to run under Windows 2003 Server. Check for compatible drivers. This is also likely the cause of the problems with the file not getting appended. Ditto for the file conflict.

I suspect you are trying to run incompatible applications with problematic hardware (microphones).

First step in troubleshooting is to install all this on an XP machine and see what happens there. THEN look at the drivers.

I have the same model and had the same problem. It was a drive starting to fail. Replaced the drive and haven't had an issue since.
