I have installed my x280n media connect device as a Vista Media Extender. I can connect and get the menus. When ever I try to plan a recorded video or live TV I get the following error.

Video Files needed to display video are not installed or working properly.

The files play fine on my media center PC. They are dvr-ms files recorded off cable using an  ATI digital cablecard tuner on a HP 9000m PC.

I have a ticket open with HP but so far they are not familar with the error and have not asked me to check any files on the PC or externder.

Any suggestions.

Are the DVR-MS files protected, encrypted? Can you burn them to DVD? Can you convert them to mpeg2 using something like VideoReDo? If not it is probably because they are encrypted broadcasts. I have read many posts where folks record from cable using VMC but can not play them back on an extender nor can they burn them to DVD. It has something to do with Microsofts DVR-MS DRM working in conjunction with the broadcast signal.

I record from cable using VMC but so far I have not had any trouble playing the DVR-MS files in extender mode on x280n, however I know that my recordings are NOT protected.

You may as well forget about getting any support from HP.

I assume they are DRM protected as I can only plan them in Vista MCE. I thought the point of an extender was to be able to extend MCE to another location. I did not expect them to play in hp mode only extender mode.

I guess it is a no no to be able to play the files anywhere except where they were recorded. Have you tried posting over at the Greenbutton?
