Release of Software Update 1.3
HP has released the Software Update for the HP MediaSmart Server. This update delivers enhanced media streaming capability from PacketVideo, server-side anti-virus protection from McAfee and prepares the HP MediaSmart Server for compatibility with 64-bit operating systems. 64-bit support requires Microsoft's Windows Home Server PowerPack1 update.

I awoke this morning to find my network health indicator light illuminated Red for Critical. Magically while I was asleep, a new HP MediaSmart update was downloaded to my EX475 Server; and is ready for me to install (timestamp 1/21/2009 9:18:40 PM). Anyway, I am unable to find any release notes about this update and am reluctant to install it. Any advice? Thanks!
Is it possible that this update removed the "System Temperature" from my HARDWARE STATUS?? I now only have "CPU Temperature" and "Upper and Lower Fans" under Fans and Temperatures
Honestly, first time I have taken a look at hardware status / temps. I can only see CPU temp - 31C degrees. This is after the update was applied this morning.
Thanks Marty. Thought that I had developed a hardware(sensor) problem. My temp is same as yours. eX470, 2 additional 500GB WD drives and 2G memory upgrade.
There was a software upgrade that just came out. You can find some details here: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2009/01/21/hp-releases-hpmss-13-r1-software-u...
From a ReadMe in the.pkcg file:
MediaSmart Server Update 1.3 version 1.3.8.25155
The MediaSmart Server update will improve image processing performance in HP Photo Webshare, correct error messages displayed using SSL and TZO certificates, and remove unnecessary temperature sensor displays.

I had this update applied automatically too and now I cannot see my back-up history on the WHS Console - any suggestions of possible solutions?
I have the 'critical' warning as well but after starting WMS console as instructed I cannot find where to go to have the patch installed...suggestions?

In the MediaSmart Server tab in the console click on "Check for Updates" or, if available, "Install" in the upper left .
First you might want to check that it is not already installed. To do that look in Settings--> HardwareStatus and if there is no "System" temperature displayed the update is installed. (The Software Version, top right in Hardware Status, is 1.3.8.25155 after the update is installed.)

Thanks - now the plot thickens! I am getting an error now that states:
"The WHS console cannot open because the following file is blocking it:
HomeServerConsoleTab.Tabmanager.HPSU.dll"
HELP!
I have exactly the same message and had to reinstall the Connector software on two laptops in order to get them to even talk to the MediaSmart Server - HP looks to me as though they have really messed up!
It's driving me nuts as I have until now been absolutely delighted with the box and the reliable back-ups operating quietly in the background.

Sorry my message is actually different it refers to:
HomeServerConsoleTab.Health.dll
The problem remains that I cannot see the Back-Up Button any longer on the console and that is primarily the function that my MSS is there for!!
I've tried the various forum postings but am still struggling so any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Hamish.
I agree with John Bick. After the upgrade, my server was in TWILIGHT ZONE - Unable to log into Windows Server console, slow response, blue screen when attempting to log on. After rebooting from remote desktop connection and waiting for things to settle down (about an hour) my server is as before update
minus system temperature as reported earlier.
Rebooted twice to no avail! What a pain - WHS runs flawlessly for months and months and now this! Searching all over the place...
At my wit's end now:
HomeServerConsoleTab.Tabmanager.HPSU.dll is blocking the loading of the console on both of my computers.
How does one do a server restore?
I also went through the re-boot routine, both soft and hard re-boots and as described previously had also been forced into reinstalling WHS Connector.
I then followed the advice of another posting which was to ignore the error message and hit "No" - this gave me back my back-up button.
The server is so much slower as a result of this "upgrade" by HP and I am still not confident that everything is working properly now; my server storage reading is taking a long time to basically do nothing (this has been calculating sizes for around 80 minutes now and no result, whereas normally it is instantaneous).
Strikes me that HP have definitely messed up.
Can I suggest that we all complain to HP such that they might register that there is a problem with their product and get some technical support to help us????
Regards
Hamish.
If a restart of your server does not solve your problems (it has for some) then power it down, wait 5 minutes and power it back on. If that fails you could try the option to rollback the server to the prior software level, a new option in the first tab of the console IF the update actually installed. After a rollback you could restart the server and search for updates again, installing a second time.
Failing that I would recommend taking the problems over to http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/ where there is, I believe, a much higher level of technical support available.

Since this update installed, I can't login via the console - I just get a blank blue screen (two computers). Connector troubleshooter says that there is a software version mismatch. I have reinstalled the connector software twice, on one machine nuking the old installation folder completely as the troubleshooter recommends, still to no effect. I can access thru the HP Control Center, but can only use the console on the server itself when I connect thru remote connection. I have rebooted the server, etc. Obviously, there is some issue with this update, and I may try to roll it back.

The other alternative for you and for others experiencing some of these problems might be to do a Server Recovery (NOT a Factory Reset as that formats all the attached drives). While this may seem like a lengthy process, install, upgrade, confogure and reinstall all the Add-Ins, it may get you to a solution faster. I do not believe that, at this point, anyone really knows exactly why this particular upgrade is causing ptoblems.

Thanks John - Do you see anything posted over there on this issue yet? I looked in the Troublshooting and Software forums and did not find anything very current, and nothing on this particular issue. Perhaps HP will discover that this update has caused lots of problems and will be issuing an updated connector software.
I note that the connector software on the server has not been updated recently, so it would definitely not match the latest updates of the server software that were installed this weekend. In the meantime I can get to the server via remote desktop, so I will wait to see if any better solutions come along.
John - thanks for all of your diligent feedback.
I, like Gene, am accessing using remote desktop but am dismayed at the loss of the console function. I recall a similar screw-up with the software last summer...
I have scoured the web for help but there is none thus far. I will report back if I find a solution.
Try this:
Shut down the server via remote desktop.
Disconnect power from server.
Reboot your router.
Reapply power to server and power back up.
It took my server about 30 min. for things to settle back to normal.
