I had a Dell desktop backing up to an HP Mediasmart Server. Both died at the same time, the HD on the Dell is dead and the right most light on the server flashes between red and blue. I tried to do a recovery with the recovery disc available on Mircosoft's website, but the software doesn't find the server. I see the server get an IP from my router, and it doesn't respond to file sharing or remote desktop requests either.

I've removed the HDs from the server and tried putting them in my desktop. I see all the files that were in the normal shared folders, but don't see anything about the automatic backups that were occurring. Is there anyway for me to access the files that were being backed up?

The most important thing is access to these files, but getting the server to actually work would be helpful too. Any ideas on that?

Thanks for your help. :)

As for the backup files... They are on the disks, but in a different format. The Shared Folders can be easily read and files copied directly off the disks, this is not the case with the backups. The files are, of course, on the disk, but they are in a format used by the WHS database and are not directly readable. You need a WHS system to recover the backups.

But not to panic! Connectivity issues, while very frustrating, are generally solvable once the cause is identified!

Are you trying to recover the laptop or are you trying to access laptop backups on your desktop? Either way, first power down EVERYTHING, router, MSS, PC, etc. Disconnect EVERYTHING from the router except wired connections directly to the PC and the MSS. Be sure to disconnect the internet in addition to everything else. Power the three things back up (MSS, router & PC). If you are trying to access the backups from desktop please post back with your status at that point. If you are actually trying to recover the laptop, make certain you boot the laptop from the PC Restore disk post and back with your status at that point. As I am not completely clear on which you are attempting at this point it is best to branch one way or the other at that point.

What kind of router do you have? Did you need to set up a fixed IP address when you did the initial install.

If the above suggestion does not work I suggest that, for expediency, you take this problem over to http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/ where I believe you will get better technical advice much quicker than you will here. You may find a solution fairly quickly by searching there but whether you post a new thread or find a solution please post a link here for the benefit of future readers. And please provide the answers to the questions above as part of your next posts.

I have a pretty complicated network setup that includes a D-Link 604, Airport Extreme (802.11N), Airport Extreme (802.11G), D-Link DI-614+, and Actiontec MI-424WR. The D-Link 604 is the only one that I guess is really acting as a router. It's running the DHCP server and everything, aren't doing anything but basically adding more ethernet ports. (I'm not double natted or anything)

Because my previous tries weren't working, I setup a less complicated network just for recovering. I took one router, a DI-614+, and only had my desktop and the server connected to it, and reset the router to the default. I turned my PC on first and then the server and saw the server get an IP address from the router's DHCP server. I don't remember if I set the server up with a static IP or not, but this made me assume that I did not.

I'm not trying to restore a whole computer from a backup, I'm just trying to get the "My Music" folder from the backup, specifically "iTunes Music". ;)

Thanks for your help. :)

First, did what you just described work? Hard to tell from your last post exactly what the status is.

If not, was ANYTHING else attached to that router, including the Internet? And had the router power been shut off and then back on?

If you did all that and it is still failing please confirm the MSS lights and check the firewall settings on your PC.
