Try disconnecting from the internet (i.e. disconnect the router from the net) and try it again.....

I notice several people on this forum have had great luck getting the Computer Restore function to work. I have had no luck.
I have downloaded the latest Restore CD, to no avail. The restore wizard takes me through all the steps with no problems, but then when it comes to "finding my server" it is never successful. I have tried both the automatic search function as well as the manual. The manual search gives me a "network error" prompt, which is strange because my server is wired to the router as is my computer. Any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks for the idea. It didn't work. I even tried connecting the server directly to my computer via ethernet cable - that didn't work either.
Hooking them uo directly to each other most likely wouldn't work without a crossover cable. If you have another switch (like a small 4 or 5 port), you could try using that instead of your router and see if it connects.

I too had the same problem, and if I remember right I had to chose something like "computer with less than 512k (edit:512MB is what it should be) of ram," even though I have 4GB. It would not see my server unless I chose the lower one, once I did that the system restore worked beautifully.

JohnBick said:I can't remember if that was exactly the choice, it's been awhile since I've done a restore. But it was definitely the one that was not my laptop at all. After trying numerous times with what I was supposed to choose I remember it would not find my server. After getting very frustrated I went with the other choice and like I said in my earlier post it worked like a charm. Bug? I have no idea but I was happy to get it to work :)Kansas said: I too had the same problem, and if I remember right I had to chose something like "computer with less than 512k of ram," even though I have 4GB. Folks,
I really appreciate your help with this. I still haven't got it to work. I tried connecting the computer and server ethernet cables exclusively through an enthernet switch - that didn't work.
I have also tried every combination of the the greater memory/lesser memory choices with combinations of cables/router/ethernet switch. Still no luck.
I am going to posit this question to HP and see what they have to say about it. I don't relish the thought spending hours on the phone with tech support, but I am so frustrated that it will be worth it.
Switch or ROUTER? I would suggest a ROUTER that is not connected to ANY other device.
I would also suggest taking this over to and posting all the information you have provided here. That board is more focused on the server (MSS) and there is a more technically oriented support base in place as the community has been around a bit longer.

John,
Thanks for the follow-up. I have tried it on both a router and a switch. I will follow your advice and post this on the forums. Thanks for the link - I'm sure you could tell I am new to this board.
Another thing to try is to open one of the backups of the pc from another pc and copy the Windows Home Server Drivers for Restore to a usb drive. Then try the restore again with the usb drive plugged into the pc and it should load the drivers from the usb drive. Also if you are using static ip addresses, change it to automatic (DHCP) and have only the WHS and pc to restore plugged into the router.

Hi friend i had a virus problem with my laptop the other day and the only way i could get the restore to work was to connect the server directly to my laptop, i just used the cable that came with the server, took around 30 minutes.
Everything went great, restored as it was before the virus problem....

Thanks. I'll give that a try. It seems logical that it would work, but who knows.

I would suggest editing you hosts file and directly connecting to the server.
I did not need a crossover and it worked.
My main issue was the hosts file.
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
(Using vista you will need to right click on Notepad and run as Administrator)
Edit is like below:
For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.XX SERVERNAME
::1 localhost
Make sure your ip and server name is correct, the above is just an example.
I couldn't get it to connect without doing this.. on all of my machines.

I'll be giving this a try this weekend. This has certainly not been as easy to do as the marketing arm the Server folks leads one to believe...thanks for the ideas and I'll keep you posted.

I have an HP Elite m9400t that I chose to reset to factory settings with the intent to restore with the home server, but the boot disk for the restore will not recognize the server. I've tried the additional drivers and worked with tech support to even do a direct connect with an ethernet cable with no success. anybody got suggestions before I start reinstalling from scratch?
As the answers are obviously not being provided here I would again suggest taking this discussion over to and posting the information provided here as a starting point, including the suggestions made and results. That board is more focused on the server (MSS), there is a more technically oriented support base in place and the community has been around longer.

Actually, I did as you suggested and forgot all about that avenue. I guess I assumed if anyone posted there I would get an email just as happens here. Sorry.
