I recently purchased an EX-470 and whenever I turn it on there appears to be hard drive activity that occurs for more then 10 minutes.  Is this normal?  According to HP customer service it isn't.  If it is normal will adding more RAM remedy or lessen this situation?  I have updated the software(Power Pack 1) and server(1.3) to the latest updates.  I am presently using the server with an XP Home computer and a VISTA Home Premium 64-bit computer.  The capacity of the server is at about 30 percent used.

 Thank you,

Miles

If you have installed either PVConnect or McAfee AV from the 1.3 update then this could be the drive activity you are seeing. McAfee is a resource hog and you might be seeing it do a startup scan and PVConnect could be rebuilding it's database.....

The server is intended to be left on all the time. You imply you turn it on/off as needed, which probably isnt the best idea long term. It is likley doing housekeeping, checking for software updates, etc. and having just the base memory will make things take longer for sure, especially when everything is still booting/loading. Adding more RAM will help with eliminating some OS paging in and out of memory.

My instincts tell me that this box should have more memory, however the folks at the HP MediaSmart Technical Support area say that there is plenty of memory out of the box.

I am tempted to upgrade the memory after my warranty period expires.

bxofcpoison: Trust your instincts. Without PVConnect and McAfee I would agree with HP that 512MB was sufficient as long as the device was used as intended. Problem is that many of the real neat Add-Ins we all use are more than was originally intended! Add McAfee and PVConnect to the mix and I agree with you.

Add the memory! But do NOT wait for the warranty to expire as HP has agreed to honor the warranty even if you do upgrade the memory! So why wait?
