I am hoping someone can help me figure out what I can do in this scenario. I have a HP EX470 with 2 HDs and 2 USB Drives. Now usually there is no problem, but what happens once in a while is that my network will drop and all of a sudden the blue blinking server light comes up. If my network comes back online, the light doesn't stop blinking. I also then have to do a hard reboot and it just keeps blinking. To fix this problem I sometimes have to leave the server off for 24 hours and then it comes back online and then basically this entire thing happens again and again (every couple of weeks).

Does anyone have any ideas. I have already called into HP and what they did was they gave me another chassis and that still didn't solve the problem. I can't seem to figure it out and am hoping the community can give me some ideas. I was thinking about doing a server restore, but am worried that the blue blinking light will happen during the restore and then I will be stuck. Is there anything I can do, such as connect to it directly with a laptop or something like that. Any thoughts. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Other then the 2 USB drives, have you added anything else to the server (attached a printer, add an add-in, expanded the memory, etc)?

No I have not. Never wanted to make any upgrades or switch anything out. Happened added anything new except a hard drive 6 months ago and this problem has been happening for many months now off and on. Problem is that recently it has become more frequent and I can't seem to figure out and HP couldn't either.

It could be an intermittent issue with one of your external hard drives (power management type problems) where the server is telling the drive to spin up and it's taking longer then it expects or it's returning an error. What make/model drives do you have attached to it? I ask because I had a Western Digital My Book that didn't like to wake up and caused all kinds of issues on a home built WHS I was running and replacing the drive cleared up the issues. Have you used remote desktop to log into the server and looked in the Event Viewer for any errors?

Hmmm that is interesting, and thanks for letting me know. I actually only use WD, and have 2 WD My Books (External 500 and 1TB) connected to the server. I can check the event viewer when I get the server started up next and post any findings. Anything I should be looking for. As a home user, not sure if it makes sense to me why the Network Indicator would flash if the External Drives were not spinning up. But I am going to see what I can find in the logs by remoting in.

You stated the Server Health indicator was blinking, not the Network light. If it's the network light blinking, that usually indicates an intermittent connection to the network (could be a bad port on the router/switch). If this is the case (network light is blinking, not the server health) then have you tried plugging the network cable into a different port on the router/switch or swapping the cable out with a known good one?

Pardizzone, sorry about that. I meant the health light (the one all the way to the right). I reread the manual to make sure I got the right names and sorry about the confusion and thank you for your assistance thus far.

No problem.... just want to be sure we are talking about the same thing. Look for anything in the Event Viewer that has to do with HPDiskMon, HPHealthMon or anything with errors as it could point you to the cause....

Alright I will definitely do that. I just tried putting it on but still blinking blue. I will try again and get back here ASAP. Thanks again.

It could also be a bad USB cable or USB connection on the drive......

I suggest searching and then posting this (corrected and addressing the questions asked so far) over to .

Did you ever find the solution to your problem? I've just come home to find my 10 month old EX470 off the network with the health indicator flashing blue. Reboot makes no difference. I had some router problems so I had to reboot that also but that seems to be working fine now.

Any pointers before my HP support call?

Blinking blue usually points to a server recovery...you could try and leave the server on blinking blue and see if it boots
