I installed the McAfee add-in (but never registered).  Well, my console locked up and I assumed that McAfee's indexing might be the culprit.  Since I could only get the blank console screen, I went to RDP to wipe it out.  I used add/remove programs to nix two McAfee items, and it went through the uninstall routines and erased the TopWHSaddin.msi from my addins folder.  My console is since functional (not sure if it was due to McAfee removal or not)...but, lo, McAfee still shows as installed when I view my add-ins from the console.  If I try to remove it from there, I get an "Uninstallation Failed" error.

I've looked to see if I could find the msi online to at least put a copy in the addins folder and see if it'd work that way, but I had no luck.

It doesn't seem to be hurting anything, but I'd still like to at least get rid of the McAfee entry in the console.  How can I do that without the msi file in the addins folder?

Undecided

I have the same issue...

November 7, 2008 10:17 PM

Did you guys try rebooting first? A lot of addons cause that screen to happen and rebooting fixes it. I had no troubles removing McAfee through the console.

November 8, 2008 3:47 AM

Yup, its been rebooted several times...

I have a call in with McAfee, it seems there is a tool to remove McAfee products...

November 8, 2008 4:19 AM updated: November 8, 2008 4:20 AM

I don't think I rebooted before going to the RDP to uninstall (can't really remember now) - being new to WHS, I pretty much went with the first solution I found online that seemed like it'd fix my problems. I know I have rebooted multiple times since.

mikeh, has McAfee posted the removal to some obscure URL yet?

November 8, 2008 4:46 AM

This is the email they sent. Not tried it yet though...

I had a problem after the 2 add-ins were installed. Instead of uninstalling mcafee, I elected to uninstall PVConnect via RDP which also resolved console access. I have not re-installed pvconnect because I dont feel I need it for my uses. I think its more important to have the virus protection going.

I had same issue where PVConnect still appeared to be installed in the console add-ins. I RDP'd to server again and went through registry searching to pvconnect items and removed them until it no longer shows as being installed. However, going through the registry is dangerous if you don't know what your doing. Anyways, good luck, hope the above works for you.

Whenever you guys install an addin and can't get to the console (the blue/green screen). Rebooting always fixes that. I think you guys jumped the gun with remoting in and uninstalling through add/remove.

November 8, 2008 3:50 PM

Maybe, but the problem is how to get rid of this dodgy entry in the add-in tab...

ps/ none of the above McAfee methods worked for me...

November 8, 2008 6:48 PM

MitchSchaft - In my case, I had rebooted numerous times, waited over 24 hours and rebooted again and the normal admin console was still inaccessible. So at that point, I took a shot, did RDP and uninstalled pvconnect. That resolved my issue with the admin console as I figured I didnt need pvconnect anyways.

This was several months ago (a few days after purchasing the MSS). I have since upgraded to 2GB RAM, but still decided not to retry installing pvconnect and prefer to keep mcafee installed. I just think the 2 add-ins that are pushed by HP don't play well together (particularly with the 512mb RAM) as shipped.

Anyways, I thought I would share my experience with the poster and provide my path as a possible option. If pvconnect isn't seen as something needed, you might consider un-installing it and re-installing mcafee.

Colin Hodgson a MVP Moderator over at Microsoft suggested;

Any programs that show as an Add-In, should be installed and un-installed via the Console, otherwise you end up as you have.
The normal method would be to re-install McAfee through a RDP session, (not through the Console), and then remove it again, but this time through the Add-Ins section of the Settings page in the Console.
Alternatively, you could edit the Registry on the server through an RDP session and remove the appropriate key. The entry would be in the HKey_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows Home Server/RegisteredAdditions.

I just removed the key (after exporting it - just in case) and all is well.

mikeh, I deleted the registry key you indicated, and everything seems to be great now. The TopWHSaddin.msi showed back up in my software shared folder again immediately after I deleted the registry key, BTW. Thanks for the help!

To get rid of the nagware you need to remove the .msi file from the software\addin directory. I created software\addno and moved the .msi file there. This get's ride of the system alert indicating uninstalled add-ins.

I've found the same thing (that all of the removal discussion is geared toward HP machines and not the Acer). I tried using the "McAfee removal tool" mentioned above, but that didn't seem to do much. I tried contacting Acer technical support and they wanted me to pay for support (I only just got the box a month or so ago).

I tried the Add/Remove Programs option and it didn't seem to do much, but I haven't rebooted since then.

I'm definitely interested in anyones success story for the Acer.

Thanks,
Bill

OK, I might have been successful in removing McAfee from the Acer.

I don't vouch for whether this is the right way to do this or that it will be complete in the long term.

I also don't know whether all of these steps are required or in what order they should be done. I'll try to document the steps I took.

1) I downloaded and ran the "McAfee removal tool" mentioned further up in this thread.

2) I rebooted the easyStore.

3) I opened a Remote Desktop on the easyStore, logging in as Administrator, and removed McAfee via Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.

4) Using regedit I saved a backup my registry and then removed

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\McAfee

5) I rebooted the easyStore

I'm not positive about the paths in the registry (at least I'm not positive about the second path). But I was able to find these two registry entries pretty easily just poking around regedit.

After I rebooted the Windows Home Server Console shows a network status of green and, as a bonus, the McAfee icon no longer shows up in the list of icons along the top of the console.

I just want to iterate that I just stumbled my way through this and I am not knowledgable in these areas. So this goes with a big YMMV and for all I know you could corrupt your WHS installation and maybe loose all of your data. Who knows.

I have a new Acer H340 and did not have to go through all the gymnastics mentioned in the earlier posts. I simply went into Remote Desktop on my Vista, navigated to Uninstall or Remove a Program, and deleted anything McAfee. I then re-booted the server and all references to McAfee were gone...and no more nagging and red lights.

September 15, 2009 5:16 PM

Just to confirm cappy1's statement, I performed the same set of operations he did and got the same results:

1. Logged in to the WHS as Administrator via Remote Desktop
2. Opened Add/Remove Programs through the Control Panel
3. Selected McAffee packages (there are 2) one at a time and removed them.
4. Rebooted the easyStore.

On reboot, I connected via WHS console and verified evidence of McAffee is removed both in the top row of buttons and in the left column under Settings.

I then RDCed back in as Administrator and ran regedit to see if I could find any lingering McAffee entries, and did not.

If I encounter any problems as a result, I'll update the thread, but things are looking pretty good on my WHS. Happy removing! :)

I'm new to this and can't seem to remove the McAfee from my new Acer server. Unfortunately I have Windows 7 Home Premium so I don't have the ability use Remote Desktop. Also, McAfee does not show as an available Add In for the server so I can't install it to subsequently remove it. Does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of McAfee? Thank you.

January 7, 2010 7:55 AM

Why do you want to remove the antivirus. And don't use the remote console to do it.That's how everyone gets in trouble from the start.

I have no use for the antivirus. That's why I would like to get rid of it.

Only one good reason to have an AV program on the WHS - A single virus which migrates from a connected Client to the WHS can wipe out everything.

Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.
