I have a windows XP laptop that gets an error when trying to open any of my WHS shares. The error \\servername\sharename is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. I can access the shares without issue from my Vista machines. My user account and password are not identical on all of my machines but the Vista machines do not seem to have a problem regardless of the username. The passwords, regardless of the username, are all the same on these machines. The XP machine can only access the Music and the root of the Users shares (but not any of the actual user directories) on WHS.

Before you go down the road of make the usernames the same... I have now changed them all to be idenitcal to no avail.

 Anybody have any ideas?

First, do NOT make the user names the same. There is a very real possibility that WILL cause problems! (Passwords same is OK.)

Did you allocate a shared space for the XP client on the MSS? Also, is the Guest account there enabled or disabled? Is the Vista share in the User area set up to authorize access for the XP Client? If the Guest is disabled, and the Vista account is not allowing the XP client to have access, and there is no account for the XP client then the XP client will not be able to access anything in the "User" shared area?

You mention that Music is accessible. What about Photos? Public? Software?

That Music is accessible makes me think that you need to look under the "Shared Folders" tab on the console and check the user access for each folder. (You can also do the same by going to the "User Accounts" tab and then opening the properties for the XP User Account and looking at the Shared Folder Access area/tab in the properties. You may find that all but the Music share have the "None" column checked for access...

Ok.. Thanks for the advice.

As it turns out, Changing the username in XP was not really changing the username but changing the display name for the account. I created a new account with the correct username and all is working as expected.

The reason I need to have the username the same is that this is my personal account and I need to have access to my files from all of my machines. I have set up the machines to store all of my data on the server so that it is backed up propperly and is centrally stored.

You should reconsider the decision to have multiple machines have the same name. There have been numerous reports of folks having trouble with that. If you think about backups, for example, how are the different machines differentiated? You can always authorize all the machines to have full access to all the shares which will satisfy your "need to have access to [your} files from all of [your] machines". Then use different names such as "MartinVista", "MartinXP", "MartinLap", etc. with the same password.

Your experience may be different, but you may not realize the problems until it is too late. Proceed with great caution.

Ahhh... It seems there is some confusion. All of my machines have different names and have allways had. It was my username on these machines that I needed to be the same to get WHS share access to work. Unfortunately, Windows XP and Vista mask your actual username with a display name which was causing the problem. When I thought I was changing the username to be the same as the other machines, I was actually only changing the display name and thus, authentication would fail. By creating a new account on the XP machine with the correct username I was able to solve the problem.

If you have multiple machines on a network using the same computer name (I am not even sure if it is possible to do) then DNS wouldn't work.

DNS is just one of the problems that can cause!

Glad you are up and running again...!
