Error Message: "Verify that your router is accepting Remote Access connections".  This is the last step (I think) to getting my HP MediaSmart Home Server finally setup.

Can anyone offer suggestions on clearing the last step?  This has been quite a frustrating learning experience!

Thanks...

Questions

Is your broadband Comcast ?

Are you using a router ?

Do you have an IP telphone ?

My broadband is COX cable in Las Vegas, NV

I am using a Belkin router

I do not have an IP telephone.

I can get you more details on the cable modem and router once I get home from work.

Thanks!

I had the same problem and not having a lot of expertise it took me a week to figure out how to make it work.
I have Comcast with a D-Link router but it should be the same. The router is not opening the ports and is not forwarding the data to the server from the internet.
Here is what I did and are my suggestions.

You will need the ip addresses for the following items

Hp Media Smart server to set up virtual server
Belkin Router to log in

Log in to your Belkin router and access the Virtual Server Settings page.
Enter the following for ports
80
443
4125
3389
55000
56000
Manually Entering Settings into the Virtual Server
To manually enter settings, enter the IP address of the server in the space provided for the internal (server) machine, the port(s) required to pass (use a
comma between multiple ports), select the port type (TCP),
and click "Apply Changes"
Let me know if it helps

I opened the ports you listed in the Virtual Servers page on my router and assigned them to my Server's IP address and chose TCP.

The only one I couldn't add was 3389 because it was already assigned for remote desktop.

I also went into the Windows Security settings and added those ports to the advanced tab under firewall.

Still not working...

Thanks, though!

Here some other things to try
I know these are a lot of items to check but any one could be the problem

Rebooting of the router, server or cable modem or having the AC turn off can change the IP address of your router and Lan computers.
Go to the DHCP page on your server.
Check the DHCP IP Address Range to ensure it covers all your Lan items (including the server)
Set up a DHCP reservation for every Lan item you currently have so their IP address never changes

Ping the router and the server to see if they are reachable.

Go to Shields Up! https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
First, you will be able to get your system IP address which is the address that should show on the details when setting up your server remote connection.
Second you can check what status it shows for ports 80, 443, and 4125. If they are stealth you have not set up the router properly or your ISP may be blocking these ports or a firewall is in the way, or even your cable modem.

My set up worked better setting it up for a domain name and web ip using Microsoft Live.
All you need is to sign up for a free Live Hotmail account
There is a big benefit to using Microsoft Live. If you use the HP vendor you always get an invalid security certifacte message. If you use Microsoft Live they use HTTPS and no certificate error message.
Let me know

You may want to run some of the tests available with the WHS Toolkit Add-In.

Thanks for all the advise.

The only way I was able to do it was by opening up a port on the server by editing the root directory. My broadband provider COX (in Las Vegas) blocks port 80.

So, I followed instructions from this link: http://www.myhomeserver.com/?page_id=23 and it worked like a charm.

I only did this after spending 6 hours on a Saturday morning messing with it with the HP tech support, belkins and COX tech support. What a pain, but now I am in business.

Thanks, again!

you really didn't need to modify the port. you could have used https instead of http. comcast does the same, blocking 80, but allows traffic through 443 which is https.
